Same car which just sold on eBay for $7300. Apparently the sale fell through.

Based on the photos, I'm not sure it's worth 10k. That hole in the driver's seat is pretty severe.

Looks like a nice car. But if I think like the average buyer, the inoperative climate control fan would be a concern. Its amazing how cheap car dealers can be. It would take a couple hours and no more than $100 in parts to fix that and be able to say "everything works". But then again - maybe he KNOWS the A/C isn't right either...

PT10PDK

I don't think its worth 10k. The interior is horrendous and like Gerry says, these cars usually have at least 6k in mechanical repairs that need to be done.

I looked at this car yesterday, interior is in poor condition, lots of leather tears in front and rear seats, major cracking in the center console wood, just seems like a beat car. I didn't even test drive it car looks like its been stored outside for years and not garage kept.

All the best,

Cracked console wood is normal for these cars unless they are garage queens. In the photos you can see the big hole in the driver seat bolster, which is a shame... no easy repair, it needs new leather ($$$). The photos didn't show any other major seat issues though; shame it's not in better shape. ~$6k sounds about right if it drives ok. If you want one with perfect leather & wood it will cost you at least double if not triple.

Yeah, $15K is pretty much the starting point these days for cars with good cosmetics and mechanicals.

Boy, there sure seems to be a discrepancy between the description in the ad and the reality-check from Ricardo.

gsxr
08-26-2011, 07:28 AM
I know... bummer he didn't drive it. If it drives really well with no obvious mechanical issues, it's definitely worth $6k. The original AutoTrader price of $11k is unrealistic though; note it's now down to $7995.

gerryvz
08-26-2011, 07:58 AM
If the mechanics were good (not likely) and the car had paperwork, I could see $7-8K. Unfortunately as we all know, these cars typically carry $10K worth of deferred maintenance (generally unbeknownst even to the sellers).

What forum should post in to introduce myself?

RicardoHow about the "Owners and their Cars" forum. That way when you do get your car, you have a place to post photos. Your story leading up to and including getting a car would be appreciated by all.

RicardoD

Since this car is so close to my work I went back today and took it out for a test drive. I am still brand new to this vehicle and this is the first 500E I have every driven. My dad bought a 1987 300D turbodiesel (I was 17) and that car stayed in the family for over 20 years. I've always loved 124s and it was only the Chicago winter road salt that started attacking that car. Anyway, my first impression after flooring the gas pedal on the freeway offramp was man I need to own one of these things, my second impression was this car suspension and alignment is totally messed up.

So here are my observations
1)interior isn't as bad as I posted but not exactly in great condition either
- body is pretty straight some light dings and scratches, overall not bad for a 20 year old car
- steering wheel wrap is coming off
- shifter knob needs replacing
2)This car needs front and rear suspension work (something is wrong in the rear)
3)To drive straight on this car you need to turn the wheel at least 10 to 15 degrees, alignment / tracking is way off
4)Radio needs code entry
5)rear sun shade not working properly
6)climate control system is totally dead
7)windshield and light bulb warning lamps on (not a big deal but an observation)
8)No records, being sold by one of those no-name used car dealerships, salesman says picked up at action
9)Says one owner but the sales guy said he thought it was 2 owner
10)There is an oil change sticker in the window with an oil change due in like 162,300 miles
11)Seems to me like this car has had some major deferred maintenance and it was traded in for something else and then dumped to an auction house

In my test drive, no unusual sounds out of the engine, shifted fine, and brakes felt great. Tires had good life but out of balance major significant steering wheel flutter at 60mph. There is another 500E near me as well in Sunnyvale that I will try to take a look at next week. I'm not ready to buy anything yet but need to start viewing and driving as many of these cars as I can (don't tell my wife yet). Maybe I am crazy but I wouldn't touch this car at anything over $5k. I am looking for a $10k car that could use another $5k on top on maintenance items I will do myself so that's mostly a parts budget.

All the best,
Ricardo

Too bad. With that kind of condition, the car is going to need so much money to get it right that it will just very likely continue to be a driver that is run into the ground, and then becomes a parts car. Sad to see when owners neglect these cars, but that's the way it goes. You're right, it's a $5Kish car in today's market.

You shouldn't have any problem finding a $10K car but even at that price, it's going to have $10K worth of deferred maintenance. Better off just to spend that $15K up front and get a car that's in beautiful condition, with some history, and less deferred maintenance. Seriously, there's a longstanding adage out there "The most expensive car you can buy is a cheap Mercedes."

Do yourself and your ownership experience the following:

a) pay up front and get the very best car you can
b) in advance, find a mechanic who knows the cars.

I don't know who on the peninsula or in San Jose knows these cars. The only folks I know in the Bay Area who I trust with knowledge and my pocketbook on these cars are in Marin County.

Contact Rocketeer on this board via PM. He lives in or near San Jose and can point you to local resources that will help you with the maintenance, once you do buy.

Good luck !!

Hi.
Yup, that's what I found. He STILL hasn't had an alignment done?? I see you didn't find the thing that was the biggest deal breaker for me. I asked if the car had ever been in an accident and was told "No". I asked if it had ever been painted and was told it had not. Imagine my surprise when I got there and was then told that this car had been picked up by the dealer at an auction and that there had actually been some touch up work done. After driving it and observing the odd steering and listening to some serious clunking coming from the rear suspension I'd pretty much decided to pass. What I found when I got back to the lot killed it for me. If you stand and look at the left side of this car, you'll see that the gaps between the drivers door and the bodywork are not even all the way round. If you stand at the right rear of the car and look along the light line at the right front fender you can clearly see, just behind the wheel arch, several little circles under the paint. They reminded me of the holes made by those little panel puller things that body shops use. This car got HIT!! The sales guy was "surprised" and "shocked" and it was all news to him.
I'm still looking.

Car is still available at dealer in Costa Mesa. It's now been repainted, sadly. The current owner should have just left it alone as it is a terrible (cheap) repaint (not even the correct MB color, but a heavy metal flake dark grey). The driver's seat bolster has been nicely repaired but the split at the top of the rear seats is still there. The rest of the car is as others have described. It has the potential to be a very nice example, but not at the current asking price, IMO.

You'd have to see it to believe it. He would have been much better off leaving the faded hood, keeping the price lower and letting the new owner deal with it as opposed to this. The car was not dechromed, nor did the paint shop do a very good job of taping. There is paint on the window trim, on the top rails, around the door handles, etc. On top of that it has a very heavy clear coat that is wavy.

Looks like CA has had some issues with this particular car not passing smog. It's now bee designated a "GROSS POLLUTER". I'm not sure how that effects future owners and their ability to keep it registered, nor how it effects the value. Perhaps someone here knows?

A gross polluter designation only means that the car failed it's emissions test spectacularly. IOW, it failed with numbers far beyond what most cars that fail, fail with. Once repaired the car must be taken to a STAR certified test center and then the car can be registered normally. I am not clear if it must be taken to a STAR center every time after that or not, but in any case, there are plenty of STAR centers so it's really not a big deal.

OTOH, M119's generally run very clean so this particular car must have needed a major tune-up and/or new cats.

See, I tend to think there's always $3k worth of negotiating room on cars (unless the seller is getting or has already gotten very real). Key word being "always." This seller seems to be getting there -- real, that is.

Now that I've read this car's story, I'm at somewhere between $7k and $9k. GVZ and I were just talking about this on the Vegas car thread, here (_____). I would have it at $12k-ish if it was well sorted with provenance. $12k minus my $3k would be $9k. This isn't well sorted with provenance (see above), which gets me to around $7k or $8k. I guarantee you (not really, but you take my point), if you show up with 80 crisp $100 bills, this car will be yours. You might regret it. But the car would be yours.

I actually recall talking to a couple of sellers in the Costa Mesa area when I was looking for mine back in 2011. I passed on them due to high mileage, and if it turned out that this car and the Vegas car are they, I would not be surprised. And I thought they were $12k-ish cars then, but I wanted something with lower miles.

I'm a little surprised it hasn't sold. There's no major issues (clean title, etc) and the price is reasonable. Clearly not a collector car, but it would be a nice daily driver.

Found this on craigslist. Price seems low, but looks great.

It's been listed here for years, literally. Hopefully someone will merge threads so you can see what people think.

Better yet, search for "Costa Mesa".

Someone else just asked about this car, and now I remember it. I think it would make sense at $7k, if you have another $8k to throw at it. I'm not sure what can be done about the paint, but for $15k that could be a good car. I'm almost certain it's one of the ones I looked at, and when I spoke to them in 2011, it was one of those "my father's car, I'm selling because he no longer drives it" stories. I heard enough of those stories to decide it fits these cars. They sounded like good, honest people and I'm sure this is a good, honest car (but with a cheap paint job, now that she's been passed around a bit). But for $15k all in...? It could work.
