Hi Guys!

Looking to replace my battery tray which is a little rusty....

Found this one on ebay, its for the 129 SL, but it looks very similar to the one in my E500. I am wondering if they are one and the same? :buggin:

Pull your battery out and compare visually. EPC says it should be p/n 129-890-00-63 which was used in a number of R129's as well. It should be the same but I'm not positive.

That and is there any other rust underneath the tray?

Dave.....Sure looks the same as the one in my E500....I may take a chance on it.

Steve....thankfully no rust under the tray! So far, the only rust I have found on my 19y/o car that spent its whole life in the Northeast, is the area on the front passenger fender where it meets the bumper. I pointed it out in a previous thread.

:update:

So the battery tray from the SL I got on EBay is a perfect fit! Pictures show the old rusty one and the eBay one.

Steve....while I was in there I took care of the superficial rust I found under the tray.....I used a rust inhibitor gel, then some gray primer(coulda matched the color a little better LOL), and I should be good to go :cheers2:

It is so nice people take a good care of such things. :thumbsup2:

I am so glad my car is from Texas and it was rarely driven in the rain ( I guess was 5th car) , there is no even a single spot or sign of rust anywhere.

Rust is the issue I should not worry about for the time of my ownership of this 500E (hope forever).

OUCH Jordi! Where was that car from?

Thanks for the kind words Roma and Steve.....it's a testament to the quality of these cars that I have to look for small problems like this to find something to work on.....(knocks on wood)

OUCH Jordi! Where was that car from?

The car spent some time in Michigan but this damage was from a leaky battery and not salty roads. Apparently the PO either didn't bother to check the area or was too lazy to get it cleaned up. I had it completely cut out and replaced with new genuine parts. The body shop underestimated the labor but still did a proper job, I got out rather lucky here.

Not sure. You'll need to have a dealership check stock worldwide via their Paragon inventory system. If you confirm it's NLA, I'll add it to the list...

looks like it's still available here:

Nope. That just shows a price for every part on the MBNA price list. It does not have access to inventory. There are hundreds of parts on the price list which have been NLA for over a decade. The ONLY way to confirm availability is to either place an order (which will either be fulfilled, or cancelled) or to call a dealer and ask.

Since the tray is used on most all R129's, I would be surprised if it is NLA. But, we've had an awful lot of stuff go NLA recently...

JordiC, were they able to replace it without cutting into/replacing the quarter panel?

FYI I just purchased and received one from MBOEMparts.com.

Under my tray is in rough shape though. I am going to look into buying the factory parts to correct the issue like JordiC.

JordiC, do you have the part #'s for the items you purchased?

They did not touch the quarter panel. The battery compartment panel was replaced along with the tray.

This job is on my to do list. Almost afraid to see what's under the tray. Doesn't look bad from above but rust has a habit of hiding- especially in an area like that

Well I got the courage to remove the battery tray.

Some surface rust just but its 100% solid. For a German delivered car that has spent 20 odd years in the UK climate this is pretty astonishing! I’ll remove the rear bumper now and really thoroughly Galvafroid paint everything followed by Primer & a dust of 199 like factory. Then a good dose of anti rust Wax inside & out

It's a good idea for those that have not cleaned beneath the battery tray area to do so.
One of my '92 500E's needed this so I cleaned and repainted the tray with Abro anti-rust matt black paint.
