Being a new owner of a 93 500e now beginning the slippery slope of me
making the car my own. First step since date stamp on tires are 6 yrs old, 17" monoblocks. Best source to find and any tips for correct offsets, would be cool to find tires included. Thx

Welcome.....my 2 cents: would advise going 18 inch staggered monoblocks from a w210 e55 instead of 17.......sizes are 18x8.5 / 9.5, et31/35 factory offsets of those can work without spacers and is a very simple install and an easy to find wheel at a reasonable price.....it will look light years better than 17s (IMO) and if you get premium tires like pilot super sports it will ride beautifully

I went 19inch monoblocks and am very happy with my end result but it was not very easy at all to get there and I wouldn't recommend the headaches of "getting it right" for the 19 inch monoblocks for the faint of heart (had I not been as naive in thinking it wouldnt be that difficult to make the 19s work, I woulda just done the 18inch MBs from a w210 e55 and been done with it)

Also bear in mind that there isn't the slightest reason to do a staggered fitment to these cars unless you just desperately need to have the look. A square set is so much easier to deal with day-in, day-out, and IMO, the ride and driving dynamics are better, too. The advice above is good. 18's are almost too little sidewall for these cars, and they absolutely hate most 19" and larger installations...

Agree with klink's staggered comment, it's for aesthetics, but does look better imho.....also keep in mind it's probably easier to find a staggered set off an e55 as they came that way from MB......be careful of some of the square fitments sold on eBay, etc out there because if they weren't a pieced together set from multiple e55s (which most aren't) they often times are too high of an offset (believe from s-class?) and will require spacers.....my 19s are from an s-class and are et46, which is not end of world and are still workable if you are willing to put the square peg in round hole as I was, it just creates headaches of adding spacers (easy part) and getting the bolt situation correct (like multi-variable is calculus)

Offset depends on width. Assuming you are looking at 8.5" width, offsets around ET30 would be ideal.

7.5" fronts are narrower than stock and not recommended... and, they will not come close to filling out the front fenders. Sure, they will fit, but they won't look right on an E500E. These are great for a standard 124 chassis without fat fenders though.

Wonder what the black 124 is in the photo with a RENNtech badge...

the 17 X 8.5 sets are a little harder to come by.. You can do what I did, buy two staggered sets, make up one 8.5 set for your 500 and then use the Narrow left overs on your std body 124. They work great on my 400E Plus excuse to get another car!

Spacers are not required, but as mentioned in post #9, the fronts will look weird without spacers.

The correct sets, (WITHOUT SPACERS AND EXTRA LONG LUG BOLTS), are 8 x 18 front ET31, 9 x 18 et35. The set in the ebay auction posted above is a perfect fit.

Just about any wheel that is used on a SL (R129) or the early E55's are perfect. Your looking for wider wheels with an ET "generally" in the lower 30's.

If you buy 8.5 x 9.5 sets, you will need spacers and longer lug bolts. These are S class wheels, to mount them on a E500E you need spacers.

You'll need spacers in the 15mm to 20 mm range, and lug bolts that are 15 to 20mm longer that normal.

Buying the right wheels sometimes requires patience. The right set will always come around, just take your time and buy the right ones the first time, and you won't end up with a set of W140 "S" wheels that are harder to get rid of. I have a storage shed full of wheels, some of them purchased when I didn't know much about wheel fitment, and I was too much in a hurry like you are now.

I would never buy "S" class wheels to put on an "E" class car. Can you make "S" class wheels fit an "E" class? Yes, but why do it when the correct fitment wheels are available?

Sooner or later you most likely will want a different look for wheels, and then you'll have this set of "S" class wheels and spacers and lugs, trying to convince the next guy they will fit his E500E too.

If it's economics driving your purchase choice, just remember that "S" class wheels will be harder to sell some day than the SL-E55 wheels.

Just a thought from a wheel whore who has purchased far too many wheels that I shouldn't have.

Those are from an S-class. Besides the wrong offset (which will require ~20mm hubcentric spacers), they also have larger bolt holes, requiring custom lug bolts with M12 thread and R14 ball seat. Or a spacer that accepts M12 bolts.

Yep, a square set of those is a great way to go if going for 17"s.

Too little sidewall, harsher overall ride & more power required to get anything of larger diameter rolling. A staggered set loses its swank when one goes flat...i.e. is there a spare to replace it? what width is the spare?

Can't find the right wheels for my 500e and Need to do a road trip so looking for tires to put on stock wheels. recommended was BFG 245-60 zr 16 but tire rack says not available. Input on options would be great. Thx

Stock wheels use tire size 225/55/16. I wouldn't attempt any "plus" sizing as it will just add sidewall flex and make the handling sloppy.

Michelins are highly recommended by most forum members, on a tighter budget try Continental DW (summer) or DWS (all-season).

Those will sit 6mm further out than stock wheels, and fill out the fenders a bit more. Should work great, although I'm not 100% certain about clearing the brake calipers. Can you post a photo of the exact wheel in question?

OH! Those are very early (1980s-vintage) Monoblocks. I'm not sure if they will clear 500E brakes without spacers. Do you know what brake calipers are on your car (300mm Brembo, 300mm Ate, or 320mm Ate)?

I think Jono may need to chime in about fitment...

28's are for narrow body W124's. You want ET11's. These will clear the early/alloy caliper brakes NP. Not so sure about the later stuff..

28's are for narrow body W124's. You want ET11's. These will clear the early/alloy caliper brakes NP. Not so sure about the later stuff..


That said, if you don't buy these wheels let me know, I'm always looking for 28's for my narrow body stuffs!
