1993 Mercedes Benz 500E V8 Sports Sedan Immaculate Condition Low Miles Garage Kept Enthusiast Owned

Parkhaus1 is pleased to offer for sale this immaculate 1993 Mercedes Benz 500E in classic Grey Mettalic over Black Leather. This is a beautiful example of a well cared for and completely stock 500E. A very special car, the 500E was the fastest sedan in the world during its production and was hand built in collaboration with Porsche. Performance engineering was injected into all aspects of the W124's systems. The body was enhanced with fender flares and a sportier front air dam and side skirts. The braking components were upgraded front as rear as well with a hydraulic suspension to promote comfort and road holding. The engine was massaged to produce 326 HP and in the stout W124 chassis the car became a "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing". With approximately 1500 units ever imported to the USA, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples remaining. This car presents beautifully and is nearly a time capsule back to 1993! The exterior paint and trim are bright and fresh while the interior is pristine and nearly as new. This low mileage sports sedan has been owned by a collector for many years. It is has been garage kept and serviced religiously. The car operates very well with ice cold a/c, a fantastic sounding OEM stereo system and plenty of power from the V8. This 500E has no needs and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.

Looks really clean. This car had the original front Brembos replaced with the iron Ate calipers, if you look closely at the front wheel pics. I'm sure some collector would be happy with it. Pics of the undercarriage would be nice.

$60K and I have to replace the coolant reservoir and switch it over to Euro lights. Sheesh.

For 1/2 the price and a little more than twice the miles, someone can have mine which looks just as good outside (and has a new coolant reservoir as well as new Euro lights and fogs)

Nice looking car. Doesn't look like it's been posted here before. It's amazing for me to see these things crop out of the woodworks. But I benefited from it with mine (never for sale publicly) so I'm not complaining.

I'd be curious if serious collectors would want everything all original (i.e., original yellow coolant reservoir) if the items in question are still functional. Me, I'd replace that stuff pronto, but collectors dance to the beat of a different drummer!

The car cover bag in the trunk looks to be the older nylon type material. I'll bet that is a 500E specific car cover inside!

I think $60K is about $15K too optimistic for this car, but we'll see. Funny, not too many years ago this car would have been struggling to get above $30+K.

It does seem to be on the high side of the current market trends. Hopefully Hotbasco will be able to inspect the car in person and see if it's as nice as it appears in the photos.

Those are the original tubes and yep, they don't hold up well over time. The replacements are a little better, IMO. Again, this miiiiight be something collectophiles would prefer? Maybe?

Methinks a full set of undercarriage photos would be needed first. The MBCC car looked great in the photos but lost points after it went on a lift.

Yes, I concur. Looks like someone tweaked the clarity slider in Camera Raw a little too far. Gives it a hyper real but not quite HDR look. On the interior photos it looks like they dropped the black point down which loses details in the blacks, but certainly gives it a brochure look. Overall though they had perfect lighting conditions and it's making me reconsider the photographs I took on mine. =)

And, the first commenter compares it to - and would choose over the 500E... a 2014 BMW:

    Theo

I would think it’s worth at least $30,000, but no more.

I test drove a 2014 550i M Sport with the $6,000 audio option(forgot the name). Twin turbo with 400+ horsepower. Power delivery was smooth and incredibly fast.

At $48,000 for a 19,000 mile car tricked out with all factory options and 18 months factory warranty remaining, I would pick it over this 500E.

Modern conveniences aside, (and the bimmer has it in spades), the car drove faster, felt nimbler, and gripper compared to the 500E.

I think it’s time to consider the modern day classics.

    Apples and oranges, anyone?

Modern Classic is an oxymoron! Definitely agree with GSXR apples and oranges ! While the modern day info/tech stuff is nice, I'll take a 500E over a new M whatever. I love the analogue feel of the 036. You have to drive the car, not just operate it. Price does seem high. $40 to $50 would seem to be the correct price range.

I looked at this car in person and it's an amazing time capsule. The pictures of the exterior and interior are definitely NOT photoshopped.
The paint shines as if it rolled off the 959 assembly line and the clearcoat has no scratches anywhere, hence that shine. The undercarriage is also perfect with no rust that I could see. It even has the original MB car phone in the armrest and the headliner is the original one with no faults whatsoever and even the original 500E carcover. How do I know ? My dad bought a brand new one when they first came out.
I'm glad the owner didn't ruin this perfect example with non-original Euro headlights, radio, and who knows what else.
This one was left just as Mercedes and Porsche intended the car to be for the US market, and it's 100% unmolested.

Will be interesting to see if this car actually brings FAP (full asking price).

I would only consider a car that is at least 15 years old (and preferably 20 years old) to be a "modern classic" or "young classic". This is exactly the category that a 500E/E500 fits into. Not a two-year-old BMW.

Comparing a two-year-old Bimmer to a 23-year-old Mercedes is a joke. May as well compare an apple and an orange. The person making the comparison shows their market-cluelessness and bias by doing so.

Thank you for the scouting report and welcome to the 500Eboard. I have seen you post frequently on the GCFSB and seem to recall that you own a low-mile 500E. It would be great if you could start and OWNER thread and tell us more about your 036.

Just curious, why didn't you buy it, if the car was that nice?

To answer both of your questions, I sold my mint 500E with 30,000 miles for $58,000 earlier this year and recently placed an order for a 2017 AMG GT that will be arriving in 5 to 6 months.

Wanted to add, that the 500E was one of the greatest and most impressive cars I ever owned (and I've driven the Hammer), but with the agreed value insurance policy only allowing me to drive 500 miles per year, I decided to let it go and make space for something I can drive more often.

OUCH! What insurance company was that? I have agreed-value polices with Hagerty and so far, they don't have mileage restrictions.

Question for the Gurus: The lettering and star on the air box cover of this car is all black. I know the 94 cars are all black, but the 92 & 93 cars I have seen including my own 93 (early production built 12/92) are silver. Was this a production change late in 93? Just curious.

IIRC, they're all over the map, not related to any rhyme or reason related to year, country, color, or anything else for that matter. But I'll learn along with you if I'm wrong.

I have Haggerty on my 500E. They don't have mileage restrictions but they do have a few other restrictions. You must have a daily driver that is newer than your Haggerty insured car(s) and you can't use your Haggerty insured car(s) for daily use.

I too had the chance to view this car in person during an event. It is every bit as original as shown in the photos. My guess is that it was stashed away in a MIAMI A/C garage and not driven by its PORSCH ENTHUSIAST owner... E's seem to have come down in value... I don't think this will get is FAP, but perhaps close to that from a guy with bricks of cash in his briefcase (e.g. Miami).

Rumor on the playground/grapevine is that although the car looks fabulous from a walkaround, it has some issues which are not visible without a close inspection. In particular, there was an accident in the rear which does not appear on the CarFax report, and the repair job was not ideal. And there is some rust at several different locations, both in the paint and elsewhere. There's also the usual mechanical stuff (Gerry's infamous $5k) which isn't a big deal. Anyway, I'd recommend prospective buyers have a VERY detailed PPI done before handing over the suitcase of nonsequential unmarked bills.

The switchover was during the first third of the US 1993 model year from the silver lettering to all black.

There was actually an "interim" third variety where the letters were painted but the MB Star was molded on and unpainted.

Checked out this 500E again, while looking at a Porsche I'm thinking of buying.
Looking at the nit picky pictures posted a couple of weeks ago, doesn't change the fact that this is the cleanest, lowest mileage, completely unmolested 500E in the market.
I also have seen this car at several Porsche shows in Miami and you will not find one nicer unless there's another one that was stashed away with bricks of cash and a quarter panel that was repainted because the white Testarossa kept dinging it
In my opinion a quarter panel repaint is not a big deal considering this car is still a cherry.

Nit picky? We call it attention to detail Sir.

I knew that car was UN-acceptable in abut 60 seconds. If you should ever like to see what a Proper, Clean and Right 500E is I welcome you to visit us here at the shop.

I'll be adding all 50+ photos that I took while inspecting the car here later today...that was going to be a might bit difficult on mobile! Will be sure to give a description on each for those that might not notice the defect and that which it represents.

Some of us are driving cars that are better than this one, even if they are not lower mileage or in the market. But either way, the Fullerton car is both lower mileage and in the market, and it's a FAR superior car. Not even close, actually.

I'm not criticizing the car, certainly. It is what it is, 25 years old, increasingly old or unavailable parts and all. I most certainly am, however, criticizing any and all attempts to characterize it as the best available, etc., etc. It's not deserving of any puffery (IMO), so I criticize and refute any and all attempts at puffery.

And by the way, jhodg5ck's most recent post shows the car for what it is, 25 years old, shoddy repair work, rusted underbelly and all.

I completely agree with the statement that a car that is 23 years old is not going to be perfect and not even the 500E that I saw displayed at the Porsche Museum was perfect on the outside.
High mileage and molested 500E's can be found all day long, but the low milers, good luck finding one.
Each to his own as to what each one is looking for. I personaly pay extra for low miles. Others pay for other things. But online criticism is one thing I don't do if I'm not in the market to buy the car. That is something I discuss personally with the seller.
If I had not already gone through the 500E stage, I personally would have no problem paying between $45k and 50k for this car.

That's never an excuse IMHO... My fathers shop taught me that.
If you are going to market a car as perfect, or very nearly perfect/finest in the land it damn well better be!

    img_20161224_100214_31035703843_o.jpg

PDR work/drilled holes to access the panel and plugged the hole. No bueno.

    img_20161224_095826_31035628913_o.jpg

Poorly painted/fitted RR C pillar trim.

    img_20161224_095907_31729257781_o.jpg
C pillar trim and gas flap alignment incorrect.

    img_20161224_100606_31005069444_o.jpg

This was one my favs...the whole trunk latch mechanism is covered in epoxy primer. Sloppily covered at that. I didn't get around to pulling the trim to see All that was underneath but one can imagine.

    img_20161224_100522_31845552885_o.jpg

previously shown, but excess/sloppy seam sealer hiding poor fitment no doubt. Improperly prepped as is made evident by the rust creeping through in the Inner and outer panels.

    img_20161224_100641_31807696186_o.jpg

    Paint line anyone?

If this is a 50K car I know of 5 036's off the top of my head that are Easy 75K$ plus cars value wise.

If this car had a 25K$ price tag on it I'd say we're getting to the realm of correct. To strip this all down/repair and repaint/correct all the Improper repairs you're looking at a Serious outlay of monies.
