    OWNER - Matin

    Hello all,

I have been browsing these forums for a while and have always been interested in the Mercedes 500E since I was around 13 years old.

Many of you probably already know this car as it was owned by my brother (e500.org - Bill) who is a forum member here.

Bill had to move to the UAE so he had to let go of his beloved 500E so I thought since the offer presented itself to me, I decided to take the plunge and buy the legendary 500E!

Since he has had ALOT of major work already done to the car, there wasn't really much left for me to do - only some finishing touches here and there.

Some of the jobs that I have completed are:
    • Headliner was sagging really bad, so I purchased a brand new genuine 500E headliner and that has now been replaced and looking fresh again.
    • Replacing the front indicators with genuine orange ones (non-genuine ones used to blow off at high speeds) - hopefully these stay secure now.
    • Parking sensors - the wiring was broken on the parking sensor unit, so I have now soldered the wires together and the parking sensors are now working perfectly.

Some of the stuff that need to be done on the car:
    • Cleaning and sealing the underbody of the car to prevent rust
    • Cream grab handles - the new headliner that I have in the car now is CREAM and the old headliner used to be GREY - so of course the grab handles now don't match the same colour as the headliner - although this is minor, I will try and source a new pair of cream ones.
    • Back box deleted exhaust - I want the to hear the great sound of the V8 so I am thinking of getting a custom end pipe being made, just a straight through pipe from the resenator.
    • Fitting in the ASR kit
    • Thinking about the 1st gear valve body - but maybe this isn't worth it? Opinions welcome

As I have said, my brother was very meticulous with his cars and this 500E is in very, very good shape and mechanically sound, just the odd job here and there to do.

Coming from a VW GOLF R32 MK5 - the 500E feels like a completely different car, feels like it carries a massive amount of road presence and the big smooth V8 upfront takes it to another level - better than any other car I have driven, a true pleasure.

I haven't got any pics of the completed headliner, will upload some over the weekend when I get some time.

    Thanks,
    Mat

very good. Careful what you wish for on the V8 sound. When I took my M117 C126 to a AMG header dual exhaust with cat delete, it was so loud that I had to add an additional magnaflow under the seats just to carry on a conversation. I was able to pick up about 25HP with my new setup from the stock choke hold, but IIRC the E500E will not yield any measured increase in butt dyno by making the exhaust system louder. But it will serve the look of the car very well in your case, if one can hear it coming down the road before they see it!

    Hi Matin!

Welcome to the 500eBoard family! I'm sure your brother will have told you what a great forum this is. Whatever your question about an E500E, there's always someone somewhere who'll be able to help you out.

I met your brother several times at meets that were organised here in the UK for E550E owners, and always enjoyed "swopping notes". He's a great enthusiast for the marque. He was in fact, a prime-mover in organising the get-togethers; are you going to follow in his footsteps?

    Best regards

    Stephen

A couple of questions about the things you have already done

Martin said; "Some of the jobs that I have completed are:

    • "Headliner was sagging really bad, so I purchased a brand new genuine 500E headliner and that has now been replaced and looking fresh again."

Question 1: - Where did you source the factory headliner? I thought they were NLA! Was Cream the only color available, or your choice?

    • Parking sensors - the wiring was broken on the parking sensor unit, so I have now soldered the wires together and the parking sensors are now working perfectly."

Question 2: - Just a trivia question, was parking sensors an option back in 92-93 (don't know what year you have there)?

    Nice looking 500E, Good Luck...

Cheers buddy - my brother used to have the backbox deleted exhaust, however, had to throw it away because it was old and wouldn't stay on the car properly - hopefully this time I can get it professionally made. I'm not really after performance upgrades or whatever, just mainly for the sound of the big V8 when I step on the accelerator!

Thanks Stephen - He has always been like that for as long as I can remember, any car that you get from him will be truly cared for! I still remember his E46 M3 - stunning car.

As for the meets - I would be up for it, however, I'm still getting used to the whole "ownership" detail of the 500E - I've only had the car ~2 weeks! So we shall see! but it would be cool to do some!

    Thanks for the comments,

    1) I bought the headliner @ http://www.genuineautoparts.com/ - I don't have a sunroof and it was available to me when I purchased it. From what I could see, cream was the only colour available, however, they could have different colours in stock if you drop them an e-mail (something I didn't think of!)
    2) I have aftermarket parking senors - not sure if they made them from factory or not but mine are 100% aftermarket.

    Thanks,
    Mat

Congrats. I love the look of your car. I've wanted a throatier sound from my V8 too. I think it will really fit the look of your car.

    Re: OWNER - Matin

Welcome Mat & it’s cool to see the 500E stayed in the family! That’s a really clean car Bill had a thread on here and lots of great work was done to it in a short space of time.

For the exhaust system I did drive my 500E once with the backbox & resonator removed to get an idea of just how loud the car would actually be with a straight through or high performance cat back exhaust. It was way too loud for Road use, even taking off from lights at near idle speed was embarrassing! If you check out my owner’s thread you will see a Stainless Steel performance system I found that’s still being produced today for 500E’s. (Also - I don’t know if you recall it – but the 500E I purchased a few months ago was once owned by your family many moons ago!)

You could buy the Fox Y pipe (Resonator delete) then have a Magnaflow or similar backbox fitted by a specialist. The full Fox Cat Back system is not loud really – but from outside the car it sounds really nice. The overall effect is quite subtle with the Fox backbox which suited my personal taste but may not be what you are looking for. A Magnaflow backbox with a resonator delete should release the V8 growl for sure!

This is how the Fox system sounds on my 500E-

    Thanks bud!

I would've assumed with no backbox & resonator it would be crazy loud. I've contacted a company called PowerFlowExhausts based here in the UK and they've quoted me around ~200 to build a custom pipe - they've had good reviews and the price is reasonable so we'll see.

I've been reading your thread and I definitely do recognise your car - my dad used to own it many years ago - it was the car that set off the 500E desire in the family - my uncle also has one which he has owned for 20+ years.

I see you still have the BBS CH rims aswell - they look awesome!

I'll be sure check out the FOX system & Magaflows - cheers for the suggestions

    Thanks!

I don't think he will ever leave the 500E scene - just taking a break :P

I've already made a promise to him that I'd take care of her as he would!

No problem. Thanks, yes those refurbed BBS CH wheels were still on my 500E I got them refurbished. It was after that that Bill snet me oics of the car from 2004 which was cool to see & learn some history on the car. I'm restoring the 500E bit by bit and eventually it'll be as new again I hope

Just thinking you asked about the first gear start. You can fit the valve body but it would need to be from a compatible 400E model based on the year of your car etc. (Search this forum for more info on that)

But you could consider a FGS module instead. I chose it because I don't fancy replacing fairly major parts on the trans with used ones since my car is shifting gear really smoothly & nicely. Also the FGS module can be wired to a switch or indeed the S function on the E/S switch so you can turn it off for relaxed long distance cruising. It can be programmed via USB to upshift / downshift into first gear exactly when you want it to. I have one on it's way for my 500E from a 500e board member in USA - should you want one you could post a 'wanted' add on here another member may well have a NOS one to offer for sale. (The company that made them are gone)

Maybe one day I'll see your car again!

I was thinking that the module would be better than the actually changing the valve body as I want to leave all of the mechanical stuff alone.

I will post a thread later - hopefully I can find one - Is it easy to install?

    Cheers

Yes for sure I would like to try and make the next UK meet and see your car too!

Here is a link to the thread where I bought mine- it has a pic and the installation instructions. In any case I will be fitting mine when it arrives so I'll detail how it was installed with pics on my owners thread so you can see exactly what's involved.

    Re: OWNER - Matin

    Hi,

Finally managed to get my exhaust made up at a company called Power Flow.

Their work was pretty good and well priced, see attached pics

The car sounds really, really good now and suprisingly there is very minimal drone in the car.

Very happy with the result, although, I may swap the tailpipes out for some AMG square ones if I can find any!

The weather was really bad, so I'll take a video of the sound when the weather is better if anyone is interested.

    Cheers

    Hi all,

A small little update, I got the undersealing of the car done last Friday and it turned out pretty well!

They used a product called Bottomguard Recoat which seems to have held really well and looks pretty good. Hopefully now the underneath will stay rust free in the crappy UK weather.

Next jobs for me to do are:

    • ASR Kit
    • FGS Module (got it now)
    • Exterior work - I got a DA polisher, so going to try and polish the body to remove all of the swirl marks and restore the paintwork back to life.

See attached for pics of the before and after of the undersealing. (Apologies for the crappy pics)

    Cheers,
    Matin

    Re: OWNER - Matin

    Hi All,

    Been awhile since I've updated this thread;

    Jobs done and to do:

    1) Distributor Insulators - DONE
The car developed a misfiring problem and would not run smoothly when hot. I knew these were the symptoms of moisture in the caps, so I opened them to reveal that one of the caps were filled with moisture.
The caps and rotors were just replaced with brand new MB parts, so this lead me to believe that it was the insulators that were causing the problem as they had never been changed.
As you can see from the picture, it looks like the original part and has never been changed. I changed both of them with Bosch OEM part so hopefully, this should keep the moisture out.

So far the caps have stayed dry with the new insulators, but I guess time will tell how they hold!

    2) Auxiliary Belt Tensioner
    - DONE
It looks like my belt tensioner is broken and no longer holds tension on the belt. The belt makes a loud screeching noise when running.
I've bought a brand new part which I fitted, the belt now holds tight and does not make any noise when starting or running the car.

    3) O2 Sensor - TODO
I don't think this sensor has ever been changed so I've bought a brand new Bosch part, 0258003429, hopefully to be fitted soon.

Does this make a huge difference when changing or is it best left alone until there's problems with it?

    4) ETA - TODO
I bought a spare ETA as I have a problem with my car where it tends to try and 'accelerate' itself, I've changed the EGAS modules, CC stalk, etc, and no fix.

This leads me to think that it could be a problem with the wiring in my ETA. Going to hopefully change it to see if it fixes the problem - my current ETA was made in 2012.

    5) Coolant tank replacement - TODO
Looks like my coolant tank is leaking, so I've ordered a new one from MB which should hopefully be with me next week.
I'll fit this on the weekend.

    6) Powersteering Leak - TODO
My car has a powersteering leak, the rack has been replaced, however, it looks like the new one is leaking too. I'm gong to be sending my original rack off for a rebuild which will hopefully stop all the leaking and refresh it.

Will probably get this done within the next month.

    7) NSS - TODO
I picked up a NSS replacement from MB pretty cheap (lucky find) - is it worth replacing this?

    Cheers,
    Matin

The O2 sensor should be changed after 80 – 100k mIles so if you have the new one go ahead & get it fitted. Ideally adaption values should be re-set via Star when the new sensor is fitted.

For the Power Steering leak please see this thread- https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1138

If there is no play in the box then it likely just needs new MB seals fitted.

What if you don't have any access to STAR? Is there anything else you can do? I don't think the O2 sensor has ever been changed...

The steering box feels extremely tight and I have my old one which was leaking too, so hopefully will buy the rebuild kit and refit the seals.

It is preferable -but not essential to read the adaption values before re-setting. It should be possible to re-set the adaption value using only your blink code reader.

Connect to the LH pin & read / clear codes as appropriate until only the standard ‘no fault’ 1 blink code is present. Then ‘clear’ the 1 blink code – this will re-set the adaption values.

    Re: OWNER - Matin

    Hi guys,

    Update:

    • I had my old steering box rebuilt and refitted in the car - steering now feels absolutely amazing and there is zero play in the box
    • Powersteering leak has now been repaired and is no longer leaking any oils.
    • O2 sensor has been replaced with a brand new BOSCH part.
    • I have replaced the fuel pumps today with fuel filter with BOSCH parts (they are a bit noisey - any ideas?). Looks like the old ones haven't been replaced in a long time, the rubbers were all crumbling off.

    To Do:
    • I have ordered some KONI SPORTS shocks from Germany, these should hopefully arrive next week and will be fitted on the weekend. (pics to follow).
    • The car seems to vibrate at high speeds - not sure if it needs wheel alignment or what - anyone got any ideas about this too?
    • ASR defeat kit to be fitted soon
    • FGS module to be fitted soon
    • Since it's approaching summer, I want to get the car detailed to bring the paintwork back up as there seems to be a lot of swirl marks, scratches, etc.

I've attached some pics of the fuel pumps and filter we fitted today.

    Cheers,
    Matin

    Nice work.
About the vibration at high speeds, some 500E onwers have modified/screwed small plastic pieces in front on each tire to eliminate/divert the air flow hitting the tires at high speed.
I saw this in Japan and took some pictures as below.

I've never heard of that. Does it really make a difference? WHat speeds are we talking about?

Usually, tire vibrations can be eliminated with Road Force balancing to get the road force measurement under ~20 lbs (even better if it's under 10 lbs).

The vibration starts from 60MPH >

I think it also may be a wheel balancing issue too...however the plastic pieces for airflow look interesting..

Me too Dave, I never heard that before.
Theytold me it makes a difference in high speeds because the air goes around the air flaps.
They are from a Honda fir the same purpose but cut and modified for W124 500E.

Is the SLS already removed from your 500E? Or is that what you plan to do now?

    Hi guys,

I got around to fitting only the rears this weekend, but WOW what a massive difference that even makes.

The car doesn't feel "bouncy" and sticks to the road like glue.

I've attached some pics - hopefully I will fit in the fronts next weekend.

    Re: OWNER - Matin

    Hi Guys,

Been a while since I've updated this thread.

I've done a couple of things to the car since the last update:

    • 2x KONI Front Adjustable SPORTS shocks fitted
    • 2x KONI Rear SPORTS shocks fitted
    • 2x Camshaft magnets fitted (as mine were leaking oil into the caps, however, there still seems to be a small amount of oil getting into the caps?? any ideas??)
    • Fitted in a 2005 ETA since mine was acting up (power kept surging at cruising speeds, the car was acting really rough and misfiring alot)

The ETA was a complete PITA to get out
, one of the bolts were completely seized in the socket and it was almost impossible to get out. In the end, we had to use a diamond drill to break the bolt loose. The actual installation of the ETA was pretty straightforward and easy thanks to the wonderful documentation on this website.

Since I've changed the ETA, I have not experienced any symptoms of what I was having with the other one, no misfires, acceleration is not surging after long drives, it seems to have cleared all of my problems - really happy with that. It's pretty odd because the ETA that I took out was dated 2012 so would've assumed that it was working well, I might try open it up to see if there is any gears loose, etc. The new one that I have put in is dated 2005 with the updated wiring and seems to be working perfectly (fingers crossed).

I've also put on AMG OZ three-piece rims onto the car and the ride seems to be ALOT better to my other 18" belangs.

Now that the car is running really nice (updated shocks, new ETA, etc), I just want to go out and enjoy the drive...

Jobs to do over the coming months:
    • Performance chip coming from Dave - fitted into LH (thanks Dave!)
    • Engine Mounts (seems to be some vibration at high speeds)
    • Gearbox Mounts (to remove clank from gearbox when slowing down)
    • Maybe purchase a new MAF as mine looks pretty beat up and I don't know what the previous car was like it came out from - not urgent though.
    • AMG OZ alloy refurbed

Some pictures of how the car stands below (it's pretty dirty!)

    Re: OWNER - Matin

    Looks great, Matin!

For the oil in the caps... first, see if you can confirm that it is actually engine oil. Then you'll need to pinpoint the source. If the (new) cam solenoids are leaking, there would generally be a drop of oil at the very bottom edge of the solenoid. OR, the oil may be coming from higher up, i.e. from the valve cover gasket. If everything is dry at the VC gasket, solenoid, etc check the seal behind the rotor bracket & insulator. In some cases you may need to completely clean off all traces of oil, then stuff paper towels all around the area and drive the car a bit... the paper towel diapers can help pinpoint the leak source. This can be a real nuisance, especially on the driver side where the p/s reservoir is in the way.

    Re: OWNER - Matin

    Hi Guys,

    Hope everyone is well.

Been a while since I've updated this thread as the car has been running real smooth.

Following on from my previous post, I did end up changing both camshaft magnets, was a pretty easy job and seems to have stopped oil from getting into the dizzy caps. (some pics below).

I also had my 3-piece rims refurbished, they came out really good and I love the look of them and they transform the car from the regular silver ones.

The jobs that I still have to do are:
Fit ASR kit (button mounted and fitted already)
Engine Mounts (bought both of them, just need fitting)

    Thanks guys!
