    headlight bulb recommendation needed

    Hello,
I am looking for a recommendation on a bulb for my 1993 500e headlights. I am looking for a bright yet plug and play build easily found at the local parts store.

Wile I am at it, I am also looking for a bright yet plug and play bulb for my 1993 300ce.

    Thanks in advance.

In this thread you'll find a link to more info about Osram Hyper 70/65. Plug and play and very bright (for light design of this vintage). I doubt you'll find them at a parts store though. They are "strictly for offroad use".

Thanks Melville, but I heard that the Osram Hyper 70/65 has been discontinued.

1993 USA lights still use the 9004 bulbs. There's nothing out there which will make a significant different in light output. Just use name-brand 9004's, or tape some Mag-Lites to the hood, which may actually help. *kidding! sort of.*

Osram Hyper 70/65 are indeed NLA, but those are H4 bulbs and only fit Euro headlights, or 94-95 USA lights. Daniel Stern has a new bulb which is equivalent in output to the 70/65 if anyone needs those.

I am getting Sylvania Silver Star Ultra 9004's.
Nothing blue in the name, so I should be good.

Dave, I found the Daniel Stern site, interesting offerings, can you comment on these bulbs listed for H4's?

    Re: headlight bulb recommendation needed

Wooops. OK, I am sort of wrong. The Osram Hyper 70/65 H4 are no longer manufactured, but there may be remaining stock at some vendors. When they are gone, they they will be "NLA" unless someone sells what they are hoarding. If you want them, get 'em while you still can. The Osram Hyper 85/80 is also out of production, but as of 6 months ago Dan stated that "large stocks remain". There was discussion about this circa August 2016 but I can't seem to find the thread or posts.

I emailed Daniel Stern in Aug-2016 and here is what he told me at that time:

"There is a new Philips bulb at the same price [compared to Osram 70/65] that gives slightly longer lifespan and slightly better seeing distance on low beam, with a slight reduction in high beam lumens. Price is $21.59/ea, same as the 70/65w.

[Lumens output is] 1895 on high beam, 1150 on low beam, but that doesn't quite tell the whole story accurately. There's a blue ring just below the tip of these bulbs. The marketers say this is there to make a fashion statement with your headlamps, but that's not the actual reason it's there. It's really there to cut the mean spherical output of the bulb down to legal levels as tested in an integrating sphere (the machine used to measure light output from a bulb to determine if it falls within the legally required range). The blue ring filters a part of the bulb that has nothing to do with beam formation because it's not located between the filament and the reflector. Meanwhile, the filament is pumping mad lumens through the uncoloured glass where the reflector is looking. Clever trick. It works.

Please see bulb test results posted by my colleague Virgil at this link. The Osram 70/65w was compared to an earlier "+80" version of the Philips "60/55w" bulb. Take careful note of the actual measured wattage and the actual measured performance of the Osram 70/65w vs that Philips +80. The present +130 version of the Philips nudges the Osram 70/65w off the pedestal for low beam performance and alllllllmost matches it for high beam."

Additional info on H4 bulbs is in this post, including a link to Dan's website:

I know at least one person was not getting any response from Dan's email address, as his spam filter was eating the messages. If you don't get a reply in 1-2 business days, call him via telephone. Note there are many, many different Philips "performance" bulbs on the market, and it would be a gamble trying to find the exact bulb he describes above. I'd buy direct if you want the good stuff. I still have some 70/65 left so I have not yet purchased the newfangled Philips H4.

I ordered a new set of the Philips bulbs from Daniel Stern. He responded right away to my first email. I paid him within minutes of getting the paypal invoice. That was two weeks and three unanswered emails ago. It's hard to believe his spam filter would eat just the emails after I paid him... Dave, you mentioned calling him but I can't find his tel number on his website. Can you share his number?

Also, after placing my order, 8899 and Ntrepid did some more shopping around and it looks like Candlepower and Amazon have a lot better pricing.

After ordering bulbs in 2007 from Danial Stearn they arrived with an invoice from Candlepower. I purchased item 64205 H4 70/65W P43t halogen and item 70340 H3 55W gold.
The phone number I had for Danial then is 416 766 2327. This was his direct line.

I have been meaning to give an update for a while. I got my bulbs a couple of months ago. After many many attempts to follow up with Daniel Stern, I finally got in touch with him. He admitted there was a mistake on his end and he didn't process my order when he should have. Ultimately I got my Philips +130, at a price of around $50 for a pair. From talking to others, it sounds like it's possible to find them for quite a bit less (though counterfeit bulbs can be a concern).
