    Is this db009 sapfirschwarz?

A while back I went to check out a '95 E420, turned out to have a few issues but what most intrigued me was the color. I could kick myself for not taking more pictures but I was almost certain this was a "black pearl" or "blauschwarz" car since a blue-ish black seemed to describe the color perfectly. As I later found out the car may have actually been a sapfirschwarz Special Edition; notice the 6-hole wheels that I originally thought were swapped from a later car, I also seem to recall stainless steel door sills.

I know it's not the best pic and being a pretty difficult color to capture didn't help; so does this indeed look like sapfirschwarz? Would it be a big deal to have this color mixed up (for a future project) since I can't seem to find it within any paint chip books?

Would need the VIN to confirm, but yes, that does appear to be 009 Sapphire Black, which was offered on 1995 (and 1994?) E420's in USA... but not the E500.

One of the tipoffs is the matching lower mouldings & bumpers, which were body color from the factory. 040 and 199 only came with gray lowers from the factory.

My 5 cent... Of course VIN helps, but ones i saw E420 in 009 with dark wood, 2 colours steering wheel and other "Limited" features... Can´t find VIN...
    I mean 009 is possible on 124034.

I have seen multiple E420's for sale in USA with 009 paint. There are some E320's in USA with 009 as well.

Here is a sample VIN, which is a late build car, March 1995 production:

    Re: Is this db009 sapfirschwarz?

Well, per my limited reasearch there was something called a "Special Edition" available on all late production MY95 E-Class vehicles, not restricted only to the E420. Highlights of the so-called "Special Edition" content included burlwood trim (where not standard), those 6-hole wheels, stainless door sill trim and a choice of four(?) monochrome(?) exterior colors with db009 safirschwarz being one of them. I could very well be wrong but db009 doesn't appear to be a regular production color for 94-95, at least not on U.S. vehicles so far as I can tell. Really wish I recorded the VIN for that car but didn't really think I was looking at anything out of the ordinary at the time.

Dan, you are correct. I don't believe 009 was a regular production color in USA. And yes, there was a "special edition" offered to help move the last of 124 production before the 210 was released. Information is sketchy on the SE, I've never seen an official MB brochure with details, but in general they seemed to include the items you described.

There is a "limited edition" 1995 E320 for sale here locally. Pictures show Burlwood, stainless sills, and the wheels mentioned. Color is white I believe.

    Re: Is this db009 sapfirschwarz?

Pictures really don't do db009 justice, really has to be seen in-person to be fully appreciated. I like the color so much I think I'll plan my eventual W124 v8 wagon project around it. I have access to another pile of color-chip manuals at work but haven't bothered to check them yet because it's kind of a hike to get there. I'm hoping that getting a formula for db009 won't be a problem.

    Re: Is this db009 sapfirschwarz?

    I've owned a 124 in each color black (040, 199, 009) and also a W210 in Black Opal 189.

    040 = plain flat black
199 = metallic charcoal, closer to a very dark gray, doesn't really look "black" IMO
009 = metallic black, with specks of blue metallic flake. Beautiful color. Shame it wasn't more common.

All Sapphire Black E420s are US cars and all are 1995 models built in the Spring of 1995

Love the color. This one has been for sale for quite some time. It may even be the car from the first post.

    Re: Is this db009 sapfirschwarz?

Yep, that's the car I looked at, can't (can?) believe it's still there. It's ok for the money I guess but I just had a vague feeling there was something waiting to go wrong with it, that and you could tell the interior was a little tired underneath the Armor-all. I also had a hard time getting past that steering wheel cover but my girlfriend kept me from ripping it off and doing a burnout on it during the test drive.
