after a day in the mountains

... with lots of turns there was a noise (I guess) from the steering pump or its pulley.

Spend AM driving up the curvy hills and after a long break on my way back, stuck in the traffic with stop and go, I noticed a noise, as if someone is pulling the serpentine belt.
Got better when driving on (the here so called) auto strada.

Anyone got an idea what the reason could be?

    Thanks,
    Rudy

What year is your car - 1992 with manual belt tensioner, or 93-up with automatic tensioner?

Do you know how old the belt tensioner is? Any chance the belt is slipping due to low tension?

no noise from the belt itself; it was done maybe 6 months ago, when starting no proving power to the battery.
but I will talk to my mechanic.
Thanks for instant reply and information!

Re: after a day in the mountains

The pulley was probably the idler pulley on the tensioner itself. However, the tensioner rubber bearing/bushing can fail separately; it breaks free from the metal housing and no longer provides proper tension. When it totally fails the belt will squeal like crazy, but it can run/drive for a while in an intermediate state where tension is reduced but not low enough to cause the squealing.

First you need to figure out if the tensioner is OK or not... if it's ok, you still need to determine the source of the noise.
