    Re: 500E lens question

The part numbers you order from Mercedes are for the assembly of glass+frame, and there is also an equivalent Hella part number for the assembly.

The numbers on the glass are different than either of the above... but if someone could check their 92-93 Euro lenses, that should confirm if the glass is correct for 036 or not.

I haven't tracked the numbers on the glass so I don't have the info handy.

The HELLA part no.s for 92/93 Euro glass are 001 328 326 right side and 001 328 325 left side.

So this is a euro 500E glass then. It would snap on E500 headlamp base after I remove E500 lenses

Correct. That is the only option available for pre-facelift car owners if you want new Euro headlights...

Not quite. You'd have to remove the E500 glass from the frame, and they are glued in... you'd need to separate the glass from the frame without breaking either. THEN you glue in the replacement glass... THEN the glass+frame snaps onto the headlamp base assembly.

Ideally you'd locate E500 lens assemblies with damaged glass and swap in this glass. E320/E420/etc assemblies are not the same, the surrounds are not 'chrome' appearance.

I believe the Euro E500 assemblies, unlike the US E500 assemblies, don't feature glued in lenses. Just sturdy clips. One is made by Hella and the other by Bosch, correct? I'm not 100% certain so perhaps someone can confirm?

Melville, there was a campaign in USA courtesy of DOT regs to glue the plastic lens frame to the plastic headlamp housing, making them DOT compliant. This is because USA DOT does not allow lenses to be replaced, they require the entire lamp assembly+lens to be replaced. (Yes, I think that is ridiculous.) All MB did was add a small dot of glue in a couple of spots, and then only if the customer came in for the recall campaign. See attached PDF file with details on the campaign.

This is different than the glass being glued to the frame though. I've had the glass come loose from the original glue, and had to re-glue lenses... click here for a pictorial.

    Dave:

In my experience, with regard to the lens frame being attached to the main housing, all I have seen is a single philips screw in the corner with a small amount of what looks like hot glue.

That is both my experience and understanding, as well, with E500 and C126 "Euro" headlamps that have been sourced in, well, "Euro."

Clips holding lenses on, no glue.

I have never messed with US-spec headlights to change lenses, etc.

Again, I have never seen lamps that have been sourced/purchased in Europe, for cars in that market, with glued on lenses. The Euro lights that I have had both my C126 and my E500 for nearly a decade and a half were obtained physically in Europe, and were intended for motorcars living in that geographic domain.

Due to a stone nick, I replaced a C126 lens about 4 years ago with a new Bosch spare from my parts stock. If I remember correctly, 4-5 tough metal spring clips held it to the headlight housing.

Jeff, you are correct! For USA-spec facelift cars, there is also a single screw holding the lens frame to the headlamp housing, in addition to the 4 plastic retaining clips.

I've only seen a couple of cars with the "bonding" procedure done via recall, as described in the PDF TSB attached to post #9.. It was just a few dabs of what looks like hot glue or epoxy, at the tab corners. The cars did not come from the factory like this. I need to get a photo and add it to my website. The 'bonding' is easily removed.

Everyone else - to try and clarify my previous comments - please look closely at the photos in the original post. The lenses shown are bare glass only, with NO PLASTIC FRAME. Mercedes does not sell lenses like this. You need to have good donor plastic frames and then glue the glass lens into the frame. Please click the link I posted in post #9 showing the glass separate from the frame and being re-glued into place.

With the C126 at least (and I know this is an E500E thread) there is no plastic frame. The "Euro" glass is bare and clips directly to the front of the headlamp housing.

The chrome background is part of the frame, not the glass. Which is why you need 036 donor frames for 036 glass lenses.

    Re: 500E lens question

I've been thoroughly enjoying following this thread, with all it's twist's and turns! (Bit sad really - but hey, I'm a 500eBoard follower!).

But just imagine what it's like for us UK guys? Many of us have 500e's, which have been facelifted to e500's, which have been imported from countries where, unlike us (the initiated), the drivers are total aliens and drive on the right, and hence our cars carry VIN numbers which identify their headlamps as right-dipping, thus any orders for new lens end up totally wrong!

P.S. I'm currently trying to learn German. I think many on this site are German speakers? I believe my last paragraph is what, in German, is called a "blumenkohl Satz", i.e. a sentence with a sentence, within a sentence etc. etc. I'd love to get it translated into German! Anyone?

If you are buying new E500 headlamps... I would not attempt to swap out the glass separately. If they are used, sure, give it a try.

    What?
Anyway, yes, a little bit of hot glue halfheartedly applied to the upper tabs and stopped selling the lenses as replacement parts in the USA. Voilà! Compliance with some incredibly stupid and antiquated laws was thereby ensured...
    Putting the fun in dysfunction...
