What Stereo were Euro 500E's fitted with?

Hi all- I would like to check if anyone can help to determine what the original factory stereo would have been for a 1992 German delivered 500E?

My cars head unit was replaced many moons ago & there is no manual. There also is no Tuner Module in the trunk which leads me to think it would not have been fitted with a Becker 1432.

I think a clue is the head unit should take a regular antenna jack. A Becker Europa maybe? Or a BE 2210 also takes a regular Jack.

A Blaupunkt unit is also a possibility. Someone out there must have a Euro 500E with the original Stereo - all input appreciated!

Re: What Stereo were Euro 500E's fitted with?

This will be interesting. I don't know if the Euros were different or not, but I replaced my '92 stereo, and the next buyer won't see any of that original stuff in there either. I think the antennae jacks have been standardized since Since. The jack that plugs into my aftermarket Alpine circa 2010 is the same as they were back in the late 80's when I installed stereos as an after school job. The fact that these cars are basically the same the world over due to limited production (no RH drive, etc.) tells me the stereo is probably the same.

    Good luck,

    maw

Thanks bb1 - I'll check my datacard again but I'm pretty sure mine does it have code 810 or any mention of the Stereo

If you have one big speaker in each front door, you will have code 810...
but if not, I would use one out of the "Becker Mexico 2000" series for correct look, or maybe the MB Exquisit from 1993-1995.. very good too!

Do you have still the switch in the middle/between the seats for "fader"?

Re: What Stereo were Euro 500E's fitted with?

    I'm a bit confused!

bb1, you say if you don't have big speakers in the front doors (i.e. no code 810), then you can use a Becker Mexico 2000. But isn't a Mexico 2000 a BE 1460? Which if I understand it right you had in your 1992 car with code 810 (Sound System) i.e. big speaker in front doors!

    Have I missed something here?

I'm in the same situation as JC220, in trying to establish the original equipment fitted. Mine is a late 1992 build Euro spec car, with codes 810 (Sound System) and 819 (CD changer) - both long since removed. The BE 1460 could be a candidate, but as far as I can tell it doesn't have controls for the CD changer?

    Anyone help?

Yes, BE1460 can be connected with "10 CD's changer Silverstone or 6-fold CD-changer Mercedes-Benz", it says in the users manual.

    bb1,

That was a nice catalogue. Do you mind posting an image of the page listing Becker 1492 please?

(I bought a BNIB Becker 1492 Exquisit from member doolar last years)

    OK so here is more info on my car & the Stereo fitment as I understand it;

The original stereo is gone & there was an ICE install including a sub in the rear parcel shelf all of which are long gone & I have replaced the shelf etc.

We have a 1987 w124 200 from new & it came with a Blaupunkt Stereo. I also have a 300E-24 I bought about ten years ago – a 1990 model which also had a Blaupunkt Stereo.

The Becker BE1460 is high end & appears stock on USA models. HOWEVER – it requires a FM tuner(s) in the trunk. Which my cars does not currently have & appears that it never had.

My car does have the centre console fader switch - which still functions just fine.

There are no Door speakers either.

The wiring to the power antenna appears stock and as I said before there is a simple Antenna Jack at the head unit location and looks original. There is also no original cables through the car for the Amps in the trunk.

The non existent FM tuner / Amp, lack of door speakers & the Antenna wiring would suggest my car did not have a Becker BE1460 perhaps another ‘lesser’ Becker Model. I imagine on Euro 500E’s this would be a fairly typical setup – so what Stereo!?

Thanks for the pic of the catalogue also – I’ll do more research on each unit to see which ones do not require a Tuner in the trunk.

If I am going to the effort to change the Stereo I’d like to be fairly certain the model I choose would have been OE fitment.

What stereos do our fellow German & Russian member’s cars have?

But on the flip side – should I require to install a Tuner etc I may not attempt it all. Why? Well in the UK we will be doing away with FM signal within a few years. Going DAB instead. So it may be better to choose a Continental Stereo or similar with DAB capability now rather than fit an original unit with all the wiring & tuners etc only to become defunct.

Just FYI. USA-spec 124 sedans all had the same stereos - meaning, no optional head units - I think from beginning to end of production. I'm not familiar with the BE1460 though.

AFAIK, these were the 3 head units used in the 124 sedans in USA:

1986-1990: BE-754 - Has internal amp + tuner, external fader wheel. Standard system has no trunk amps or door speakers (except 1990, with "active bass" option).
1991-1993: BE-1432 - Requires external amp + tuner in trunk, external fader wheel. System includes front door speakers.
1994-1995: BE-1492 - Has internal amp + tuner + fader. System includes front door speakers.

Confusing things slightly is the 1990 crossover year where they used the old head unit but offered door speakers (I think) with the "sound system", option code 810. Additionally, from 1990 or 91 through 1993 (or 95?) some lower-end models were offered with an "active bass" system (code 814) which had door speakers, but a single amp in the trunk. The higher-end "sound system" option had dual trunk amps. All M119 sedans in USA had the higher-end "sound system". I think 1990 had no door speakers standard, and active bass optional. From 91-up, diesels and 6-cyl cars typically had "active bass" standard with "sound system" as optional.

Wagons are different, there was never a 'sound system' option that I know of. And, I think coupe/cabrio may have had different options over the years, but still used the same heat units as described above. (??)

Or something like that. Sorry I can't help with the Euro radio question...

Re: What Stereo were Euro 500E's fitted with?

Yes, what Mercedes and Becker did with the Radio Systems is very confusing!

The hole list i posted, are all "Becker Mexico 2000" all different versions, for USA, Japan, EU..powered sometimes 2x20w, sometimes 4x20w, RDS, Fader function incl. sometimes not... switch style is little bit different on the versions for fader.

My "German" Car got the BE1460 + Soundsystem (810) + CD Changer (818).. my BE1460 got no fader build in, that's why you have that extra switch! With Soundsystem you got the extra tuner & Amps with 4x25w in the trunk.

The 1460 can control the CD Changer too!

The BE1470 is the same as 1460, but instead 4x20w.. BE1432 same as 1460, but for US

If you have no soundsytem, (don't confuse with active Sub Version here) but a extra fader Switch, you can use Radio with 2x20w, the switch splits for 4 speaker, but eats power!
If you have a radio with fader build in, kick the switch out... my one had a switch, but disabled.. way better power now!

To stick a complete Soundsystem in, you will need a donar car... because you will need a lot of stuff!

To upgrade to the old original style with just 4 Speakers, take a Mexico 2000 unit with or without second trunk unit (2x20w/4x20w) or Special/Exqusit Single unit (4x25w).
4 nice new speakers (Rainbow IL-x4.7), maybe a very small AMP like PIONEER GM-D1004 and mount it behind the footrest of the passengerside.

Problem with the Mexicos, mostly 2 unit System and 20w @ 3OHM, Special/Exqusite got 25w @ 4 OHM like normal today

Price and work.... I would go the Special/Exqusite way with new Speakers and little Amp..

What Stereo were Euro 500E's fitted with?

I am not very familiar with radio units but one of my Euro 500E's came with an original radio as per below instructions in the car and photos.

    Be1431 is a early Mexico 2000 unit, around 1990

Check your Datacard for Codes, if the car was ordered with this Unit:

My car with a Becker Mexico Radio 2000 came with a 756 code, I didn't find it on the above attachments though.

Thanks BB1 for the great documents! On researching more I bought a Becker BE1480 which has a in built amp + tuner so an Antenna can connect right into the back of it.

I believe this is the unit my car would most likely have had originally given the lack of Tuner or Amp in the trunk.

Looking forward to getting it installed! Just need to find some plugs for the back of it I'll get to work on that.

Re: What Stereo were Euro 500E's fitted with?

You got the line out box mounted, so you have now options:

    - Run the Two Speaker Plugs (L+R) to the org fader switch (to split for 4 Speakers). then to the correct speakers. Fader in the radio will not work, but got the switch.
    - Run the Two Speaker Plugs (L+R ) parallel to front and rear speaker. L to Front and Rear, R to front and Rear. Yes, the Becker can Handle 2Ohm, same setup as with fader switch for splitting. The fader in radio will not work.
    - Run the line out to a little new amp and then to the speakers. The fader in radio will not work. Set up on the amp how you like it with front and rear.
    - Run the Two Speaker Plugs (L+R) to the org fader switch (to split for 4 Speakers). From their with 4 Speaker to a new amp (High Power Input) from there to 4 Speakers...

Yes Becker confusing rules May have forgotten an option...

Here you will find most radios fitting in MB:
