500E - Steering hissing when moving steering

    Hi guys,

Recently had my steering box rebuilt and refitted into my car.

Got my car back from the garage and noticed a sort of "hissing" noise when turning the steering wheel.

I've attached a video of the noise. Has anyone else encountered something similar to this before or have any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Matin

Can't really hear anything from the video you posted.

Often times, noises from the steering, particularly after the pump and/or lines have been rebuilt/reassembled, emanate because not all of the air has been worked out ... i.e. the system hasn't fully been "bled." This is generally most apparent when the steering is turned "lock to lock."

Over time I believe the air will work itself out of the pump/lines with use. However, it is possible to bleed the system as well.

What I recommend is to remove the cap from the PS fluid reservoir, and slowly turn the system lock to lock, repeatedly, with the engine running. Doing this a few times back and forth should take care of it.

I've seen other procedures that say to raise the front end so that the front wheels are off the ground, remove cap from PS reservoir, and start the engine and move the steering back and forth repeatedly.

As I said though, the air should bleed itself out over time with use.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Ah! Took the recording on my phone, so it's faint.

I shall try your suggestion and see if it fixes it.

    Thanks Gerry!!

Happened on my Limited as well when I rebuild the steering box, servo pump and replaced all hydro hoses some years ago. The car was still lifted in front when I refilled the servo oil, and I did the procedure as Gerry described and the bleeding went faster with the car lifted IMO.
