    Re: POWER STEERING PUMP

I'm sure that our member captruff could help with a used one, from here in the US.

I would also consider talking to Chris at Mercman, which is in Cornwall. http://www.mercman.co.uk

    Re: POWER STEERING PUMP

The pump on the 500E is a tandem pump for both power steering and SLS. Most of the time, they only need the front seal replaced (leaking SLS fluid).

It would help if you specified if you wanted a new/rebuilt pump, or a used one (which will probably need to have a seal kit installed prior to installation).

It's also important to know whether you need a ZF or LUK pump. Different mounting brackets so they aren't interchangeable.

Melville, AFAIK the pumps are interchangeable and use the same bracket... HOWEVER they take completely different seal kits, and use a different length of hose above the pump to the PS reservoir.

Good point though, if looking for a used one to re-seal, you need to know the brand so you order the proper seal kit!

Assuming it was working OK before and only leaking... sounds like he did something wrong during the rebuild? Bummer!

    Re: POWER STEERING PUMP

Sounds like the mechanic botched the rebuild. One has to be VERY careful when disassembling and re-assembling a tandem pump. There are a lot of small pieces, and they have to be assembled correctly when putting things back together.

    Re: POWER STEERING PUMP

To be fair to the guy it was leaking badly and only driving it a short distance and not working great its hard for me to say if the pump was ok? any idea where to find one reasonable price as I have not budget for this it was a nice surprise with a few other bits!!

    Re: POWER STEERING PUMP

Did you check with Chris at Mercman in the UK? Otherwise getting a proper rebuild is the way to go. We have a HOW-TO on doing this, but it assumes that the internal bits are already in proper position, which may not be your case. However, with careful work perhaps your rebuild could be redone properly.

    Re: POWER STEERING PUMP

If you are thinking of buying a rebuilt pump, you'll have to turn in the old pump as a core... so, the first thing is to check the tag on your pump and see if it's ZF or Vickers/LuK. You'll need to exchange the same brand.

If buying a used one, it shouldn't matter (other than the different length of hose above the pump). Make sure to only get one of the two part numbers shown in the pics below; other pumps may not fit properly.

I'm having real problems reading the complete part numbers on either of your pics!
Could you repost them at a different angle, or alternatively just post the numbers?
    Many thanks!

Maybe a stupied question, but did they bleed properly after the pump install?

Entrapped air is noisy and can last for some time, dependent on driving style, i.e. how much the steering has been tweaked to full turn both ways several times.

What other years and models can serve as donors for a rebuild?
Mine is leaking and I would like to have one rebuilt and ready to install.
Are the rebuild kits available at an MB dealer?
I need to rebuild mine as well.

    Re: POWER STEERING PUMP

Any V-8 W124 model with a tandem pump would be compatible, meaning the car must have rear SLS.

Other models, such as the W140 chassis with M119 engine, WILL NOT substitute. This is an M119/W124 part only.

The pump rebuild kits are available through any MB dealer, or through the usual mail-order MB OE parts sources. The ZF kits are considerably less expensive than the Vickers/LuK pump rebuild kits, however.

Everything to rebuild a ZF pump is detailed in this thread: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3902

The process to rebuild a LuK pump should be materially similar.

It is not particularly difficult, but it takes strong attention to detail, no distractions, and a clean and fairly large working area.

    Cheers,
    Gerry
