    SOLD: 1993 500E, Silver/Gray, 2200 miles, $0.15M, Canepa auction

Zero info besides basic data below. Allegedly sold for $150k in 15 minutes. Shame about the chrome spare, and since the tires aren't original all the original German air was lost...

    VIN = WDBEA36E5NB713509

    Miles = 2,201

    Re: SOLD: 1993 500E, Silver/Gray, 2200 miles, $0.15M, Canepa auction

I have record of this car in my database, from August, 2010. At that time, it was listed on eBay for sale, with only 589 miles on the odometer.

My comments for the database entry were: "Chrome factory wheels. Otherwise immaculate. Lowest miles I've ever seen on one of these cars. Can't really see any faults. Auction at $32K with three days left. Will be interesting to see final price."

The original eBay auction listing is attached.

Too bad 600Eric didn't get his hands on this one way back in the day.......

I'm sort of wondering if Jono was the buyer?

    Ugh. Spare wheel is chromed.

Also, if the German air in the tires is gone, is it really worth the value they are asking?!? After all, it is not period correct air. They could have at least removed all of the original air and put it into the new tires. I understand that German air from that period is better a la the trees we cut down 50 years ago are better than the ones we are farming today.

Don't get me started on the coolant reservoir overflow discoloration. So few miles but more yellow than my 93 500E with 92K miles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't there be a fire extinguisher under the front-side of the driver's seat? Or was this an option, or maybe only fitted to later models?
(I'm only bitching really - I'd love to have that car!).

Every mile that this car was driven between its 589 miles and 220X miles, destroyed thousands of dollars of value.

Never on US-spec cars, not even as an option. Actually, I believe there's a "delete" code for US cars that eliminated this.

Same with no warning triangle. You would never see these from the factory on a US-spec car.

So is the conclusion from this that we in the EU are maniac drivers - crashing our cars thus needing both the warning triangles plus the fire extinguisher !?

Yeah no $hit.... However on a VERY positive note if it did sell for $150K in fifteen minutes that makes me feel pretty good given how much $$$ I spent on my restoration.

Seems that the EU are quite the safety nazis .... many EU countries also require safety vests to be carried in the boot in case of breakdown. Fashion statement to go with the warning triangles, methinks.

Selling price also seems to be in the ballpark of some offers that were floating your way last year at Legends, eh?!?

And what about the deteriorated First Aid Kit? I have some of them in way much better condition than the one in the picture, including one that I bought from gerryvz. I think all my spare kits came from wreck-yards and they look much better. Continental tires??? What is wrong with Michelins if you are trying to keep a car as original as possible

    Ernesto:

The best place to get mint condition period American White Cross NAM first aid kits would be from a 1996/7 W210, they reside in the rear armrest past the drink holders. Due to this placement they are not subjected to as much heat and are usually in very good to excellent condition. BTDT

Personally without even seeing Eric's car in person I would rather have Eric's car than this one. It is good to see this model being appreciated. For die hard collectors the old saying is true that they are only original once.

I heard earlier today, from a very reliable source with a direct line into Canepa, that this car formerly belonged to Jerry Seinfeld.

Good news for the MB classic market. This one is a drooler. I doubt it was a US buyer though.

1992 500E, Smoke Silver/Gray, 2,200mi - you read that right (Scotts Valley, CA)

Bruce Canepa always has a five-car spread near the back of each AutoWeek magazine. My jaw dropped when I saw this one in the last AutoWeek and I had to call. It was Jerry Seinfeld's and it was sold the day Canepa got it. It took a few calls to tease the price out of them: $135,000. You can see a picture under the sold inventory tab here: http://canepa.com/inventory

To the specialists here - I would imagine that this was the highest price and the cherriest of them all, correct?

Yep, it's one of the highest I've heard of for a stock 500E. As long as Ron didn't buy it, my assumption the car is destined to sit behind velvet ropes and be wiped with diapers weekly by someone's butler.

That is an insane number for the car! I'm sorry if you all disagree, I just don't see it being worth it...

These cars were produced in large numbers, so are not rare like Ferraris/Cobras/Bugattis

Again, the commentary above about Canepa is 100% consistent with what I heard directly from a civilian friend with a direct line into Canepa. That it sold within mere hours.

Interesting VMI though, a lot of MB roadside calls, battery replacements, and small LOF services. The mileage seems good though as far as the dealership service history.

Bruce should have called me. I have cylinders of original STUTTGART air, not just German air, that I would have sold him for a reasonable price. I am not talking modern Stuttgart air. No, this is 1992 Ctuttgart air, bottled at that time and I have proof of it. Photos and everything. When I saw these cars come out, I foresaw the need to replace the air in the tires, and I went over there with dive compressors and bottled it. Price on request.

What was the actual selling price $135K or $150K. In my way of thinking it was $135K + $15K commision. Does anybody know for sure?

That is my understanding, sale price was $135k but the buyer had to pay $150k total. The $135k number is probably only relevant for paying sales tax, if applicable in your state. With tax and white-glove transport the buyer probably shelled out $160k+ to get it into their museum.

I'd send this to Ron, who would be all OVER it, but Joanna (Mrs. Ron) might kill me...

That would be funny if the car shows up at Legends of the Autobahn next month.

Hopefully he doesn't use an open transporter + broker to move the car around.
