    FS: 1991 560SEC, Spruce Green/Tan, 87kmi, $16.5k (Arlington Heights, IL)

I have no affiliaton with the owner but had a very nice visit with Humberto who is helping to sell this car for his Uncle.

I am in the Chicago area visiting family and weeks ago I contacted Humberto to see if I could look at his car when I was in town. He kindly let me do so today and was generous with his time (and also showing me and my friend who was with me some other cars he had for sale).

This is a Florida car until 1998 and 49k miles and then became a Chicago area vehicle (Carfax attached). It appears to be an enthusiast owned based upon condition of car and spares of some parts in trunk and other little details. I was able to give the car a thorough review and take a lot of pictures to help others who may want more details on this car. This car was up on Autotrader but ad expired. Car is still for sale as of this posting.

Paint in outstanding condition with no dents, dings, or clear coat issues. Interior in also in good condition, not perfect, but very clean with no leather tears. Suffers from similar rear seat back cushon defect as on my car (see photos) Car started right up, sounded and drove strong with only brakes feeling a little spongy and steering feeling looser than my own 1991 560SEC. Air conditioning (converted to R134a) and all other electrics worked fine. Tried to get close up pictures of all the little defects on the car and some of underside. I will let the pictures do the rest of the talking. Others can comment.

Humberto can be contacted at h.camacho AT hotmail DOT com He is working on assembling the maintenance documentation.

Photos I took of the car are here:

    OMG!!!

Louis is going to have to move into the garage. This car has his name all over it.

    Ricardo,

Thanks for the pics and commentary. It looks like it's in great condition.

I'm sure Humberto thanks you for posting where it will get maximum exposure to enthusiasts interested in these cars.

Looks like there is some spot rust, but perhaps nothing too serious that can't be corrected.

Nothing serious rust wise, all I found was photographed but didn't get entirely under car. Engine is where it betrays its Midwest roots with some surface corrosion on various brackets, photos documents condition.

Rear window discoloration in bottom left and right corners but underneath in trunk it was spotless. Jealous of paint condition on this car.

I have a super trusted friend (shown in a few photos) who can assist anyone if need be with purchase.

Rear window corner de-lam is common on these cars (as well as our E500Es). Nothing you can do about that short of replacing the rear window, unfortunately.

The car looks in overall good condition from what I can see, would make a great base for someone to improve upon. Color isn't the most desirable for an SEC. Usually a very dark color with light interior is best, but that's subjective. Last year (1991) is the most preferable.

Rear sunshade is a nice but fairly rare option.

No ASR is actually a plus -- the first-gen ASR systems that appeared in the 1991-only 126 models are more troublesome than the ASR-II ASR-III that is in our E500E models. There are some ASR-specific parts for the 126 that are near-unobtanium, although they (at least) don't have eco-junk wiring.

Would be a great car to obtain, make some improvements on, and flip for a profit.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

    Re: FS: 1991 560SEC, Spruce Green/Tan, 87kmi, $16.5k (Arlington Heights, IL)

This car has been for sale for quite a while. As strange as it may sound, talking with somebody on the phone tonight about SECs, this car came in our discussion. If my memory still helps me, the asking price on this car has been dropped twice already. I had my sights on it from the beginning (about 2-3 months ago ?), but as I got more comfortable with cars from other areas of the country, I lost interest in it. I still think the price would have to come down more, for solid offers to show up.

As Ricardo did, I lived in Chicago too (later moved with the job to Milwaukee) and I am familiar with what salt does to cars. In all fairness this car is not bad compared with other cars from that region of similar age. It has minimum interior wear and the exterior chrome appears in very good condition. However, when brought into the nationwide arena, this car does not stand too much of a chance compared to cars from CA or FL. I recently had the one in Boston inspected (http://www.autoblog.com/used-detail-...-Benz-560-1988 , made an offer too - FYI it was rejected), and I am able to tell you that the one in Chicago has more visible rust than the one in Boston (despite the Boston one being older, with more miles and never a FL car - initially it was a CT car). One thing I learned in my Midwest life, is that if you don't put a Bra on the front of the car, the sand (mixed with salt) that is spread on the roads in winter is thrown off by cars in front of you and will chip your paint on the front of your hood. If you look closely at the pictures, you'll see the chipped paint in the close up picture of the hood (between the passenger headlight and the grille). That tells me that the car was indeed driven in the winter (perhaps to a less extend) which would explain the rust in only 40k miles in Chicago (I hope we agree that the car did not come with that rust from ... Florida). By comparison the Boston car does not have that (which ties into the fact that it has less rust too). The tires DOT stamp shows they were manufactured week 14 of 2008 (that puts them at over 9 years old). I am also making the assumption that the chain job cost will go to the buyer. Chain job, tires, rust prevention, unforeseen repairs (inevitable on cars that old) - reasons why I think the price of this car is still high. As long as these cars can still be found in CA and FL (and other areas as well), the price is 2-3k higher than what it should be IMHO.

In conclusion, a nice car that was once upon a time a superb car. A great Thank You to Ricardo for the pictures and description.

By the time you done with the improvements, adding their cost to the purchase cost, I am not sure if there is any room left for profit.

If somebody wants to flip, here is an opportunity: https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/...225418466.html (picture below, I am expecting the car will go fast and ad will be deleted). 2k (or less after bargaining) for a CA example with 178k miles, where do you find that anymore these days?

Roy one like this could take 10k to refresh before a paint job or you get one that has been refreshed and painted for less from Trae.

I must say that the CA car could be pretty nice for $2K but who could tell from the crappy pics.
I agree it will be gone quick. It should be 100% rust free.

If for nothing else it could be a parts car but even in the crappy pics it looks like it is worth saving to an enthusiast.

Louis, you may very well be right, but I am not interested in either one of them. I don't feel like putting up with a paint job (if indeed is needed, we actually don't know) the same way I don't feel opening up a transmission because of reverse loss. However, I don't want to derail this thread, but I will just say that for some profit you don't need to invest 10k in it, and certainly don't need to paint to make a profit. Joe's SEC was in need of a paint job and was flipped for ~ 3.5k profit with no effort.
