    WTB: E500E Rear Differential

    Greetings Brothers,

I am now officially on the hunt for either:

    1. A used E500E rear diff; or

    2. A diff from an early (1992-1994) W or C140 4.2litre (with ASR); or

    3. a diff from a r1
    29.066 1990-1992 500SL (with ASR)

They've got a 1. in Holland (E$750), but they want me to physically go there to pick it up.

    Mercman don't have one.

I'm opening up the search to UK breakers and the handful of mechanics I know here in the UK ....

Obv, Europe or UK would be best for me, unless there's a beauty at the right price somewhere else....

    Thanks all in advance...

    Re: WTB: E500E Rear Differential

Just FYI... since the 129.066 diff is a different ratio, you'll need an electronic converter box to correct the speedometer/odometer. Simple installation behind the cluster, I have 2.65 diffs in a couple cars and I use the YellowBox (2-wire for inductive sensor).

    Ian,

What country are you in? Your profile is incomplete. Ebay maybe is your friend?

    Here's one listed in Germany:

Thanks - am in the UK.

By the way could someone confirm that the r129 and the w140 diffs I'm looking for are NON - ASR?

sorry - i got mixed up with a thread looking for a 2.82 for his E400 - so I need the ASR version for the E500 right?

samiam I checked the german listing, but isn't part no. 1293504914 for the post-1993 cars? I can't tell the difference by looking at it...

You definitely need the ASR version for the E500.

That one won't work... it doesn't have the 2 sensors up top. From a photo, you are looking for a diff with 2 speed sensors at the top of the diff, at each output flange. See picture attached.

Shipping weight is 90-100 lbs including packing material; maybe a bit more if it's in a wood crate.

Yea, grabbed the wrong link Dave. If he wants the 2.82, he needs an early w140 v8 w asr. 2 sensor wires, not one.

    GSXR - what's the real-life difference between the 2.82 and the 2.65?

I think I've found the right one if I go for the r129 solution...

It's a moderate difference, you would mostly notice it when accelerating from a stop. A first-gear start would be nice with the 2.65 diff. Once in motion there's minimal difference. In general I'd really try to keep the 2.82 unless you simply are unable to source one at a reasonable cost. The 2.65 will boost top speed, if you have anywhere to explore >170mph, and have a chip which eliminates the 155mph governor.

129.066 is correct and that does have the correct ASR sensors... but that photo just looks wrong. I'm not sure if that diff is actually from a 129.066 chassis, it looks like it may be the later 'reinforced' diff? Would need more photos, particularly a photo showing the part number cast into the housing (not a number written on the top with chalk or paint).

    Re: WTB: E500E Rear Differential

Thanks GSXR. I've put my name down for Steve's diff from the 1993 car but can't get ahold of it until later in the year. So for a quick fix I'm going to get hold of the r129 one that you see above.... I spoke to the seller and he's pretty sure it's the right one, i.e. early sl, I'll ask him for the part number...

    Re: WTB: E500E Rear Differential

after GSXR's comment, I'm losing the plot slightly. I'm assuming that the complete diff and it's housing have different part numbers ok fine, but how many of these diffs were there, and do the with/without ASR diffs have diff-erent numbers??

    129-350-43-15
    129-350-80-03
    129-350-09-14

and so what is the part number for the housing that I'm looking for so I can check with Carl tomorrow morning?

    Re: WTB: E500E Rear Differential

The correct housing should be casting number 129-351-05-05. This number is located directly to the left of the fill plug and will be upside-down if viewing the diff in the vehicle.

Any other casting number... I can't confirm it will work or not.

Looking at the UK eBay listing again, I am 99.9999% certain that diff is from a 129.067 500SL/SL500, not the 129.066... it appears to be the later "reinforced" diff which is not plug + play in the W124. See photos from Glen in this post, note specifically the location of the sensors on top... they are further out on the reinforced diff.

Will a Euro 400E diff be correct? If so, I might be able to provide one. Located in south Sweden, so not too far to ship.

Yes, if it's from a Euro 400E with ASR... ratio should be 2.65 but otherwise it's 100% bolt-in, even has the proper length sensor wires.

Naturally, you are 100% right. However, here is the response given by the seller this am to my request for further photos.... All I can do now is wait and check the back of the damn thing when it arrives early next week...... so let's hope he's right.. or wrong... oh dear...

    I quote:

The early SL500 129066 had the housing 1293510505 for cars with ASR. This is the one we will send.
It has the ASR sensors mounted on the diff.

    As shown in the pictures

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-1...m=161965709392

!993 on (129067) with ASR had the following diff casing 1403510405 as below

    Re: WTB: E500E Rear Differential

while I'm quietly awaiting disappointment (something I'm used to with this vibration issue in my sweet baby - boo hoo) is there anything I should know about getting the sensor wiring right? GSXR said that at least the 400E wires will be the right length... but I won't have a problem as we can use what's already in my 500 right?

Correct - if necessary, swap the sensors over to the replacement diff.

    Re: WTB: E500E Rear Differential

This afternoon, a rather rusty but "ok" rear diff - casing number 1293510801 arrived at the mech's... Carl from w140.co.uk said it's the part that was superseded by the 0505... so far so good.. Redline diff oil will be administered, I will keep you informed as to progress.. If this is the key to the vibration issue, it's the end of a long, quite expensive, maddening road....
