    Valve cover stampings indicate a 5.6L engine... hmmm...

    Wouldn't AMG have bored out a 5.6? Or, are you saying they would have put their own heads on after boring / stroking the bottom end...?

    AMG put DOHC heads on the 5.0L, 5.6L, and 6.0L versions of the M117. Generally, the valve cover stampings indicate displacement. The 6.0L upgrade was a substantial increase in cost (complete engine teardown, boring Alusil block, new pistons, etc) for relatively small power gain... so, it's possible the engine could be 5.6L with 6.0 badges.

    Stroke is the same on 5.6 and 6.0 btw; only the bore is different. Very difficult to tell if an engine is 5.6L or 6.0L without pulling the heads.

    AMG never stroked these motors, then... copy that. Thanks for the info. What I guess I didn't realize is that AMG would have put their own heads on; seems obvious now.

    Well, they did stroke a few early blocks, the 5.4 namely. The 5.2 was just bore increase...

    MB stroked it for them to make the 5.6...and again, bore to get the 6.0...
