SOLD: 1992 500E, Peal Black/Black, 232kmi, Salvage Title, BAT Auction (Muncie, IN)

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...s-benz-500e-5/

    VIN WDBEA36E1NB795061

No reserve auction; ends Oct-12, 2017.

    No Reserve: 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E shows 232k miles and has been daily driven by the seller for 8 years and 100k miles. With the original owner until 2008, the seller purchased the car through a salvage auction, following damage incurred to the left rear suspension while with the original owner which has since been repaired. The 5.0 liter DOHC V8 is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission and remains unmodified apart from the installation of a stainless steel resonator delete pipe fitted by the seller. Comprehensive records are included in the sale and document a timing chain, water pump, battery, and front brake replacement this year. The car is being offered at no reserve and is sold with its original books, manuals, window sticker, and a rebuilt Indiana title in the seller’s name.

Black Pearl Metallic (199) finish is reported by the seller to be the original paintwork, with noted blemishes including rust along the wheel openings as well as a spot below the trunk lid. Factory alloy wheels were fitted with new BFGoodrich G-Force Comp tires this past September. A pair of OEM headlight headlight surrounds are included in the sale.

Inside, the black leather-trimmed interior shows wear commensurate with age and mileage with noticeable wear to the driver’s seat, carpets, and upholstery. Aside from an illuminated check engine light and the faulty operation of the cassette player, other features like gauges, controls, and power accessories retain proper function. Mileage is shown at 234,281 miles.

Images in the gallery detail the condition of the interior surfaces and materials, including noted wear and seam separations to the driver’s seat upholstery and some sagging in the headliner.

Producing 322 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque when new, the 5.0 liter DOHC V8 is described by the seller as a good runner. He has driven it around 100k miles with issues reportedly limited to an occasional lifter rattle at startup. Dealer maintained by the original owner up to 90k miles, extensive records highlight regular maintenance including an engine wiring harness replacement in 2010 along with a rebuild of the 4-speed automatic transmission in 2015. Servicing in 2017 included a new timing chain, tensioner, timing chain rails, water pump and battery replacement in January and new front brakes, A/C compressor, receiver dryer, expansion valve, fan clutch, and oil service this past September.

The original window sticker is shown above and shows the car’s $82,150 MSRP and is accompanied by the original books and data card.

Doctor, I think that cancer may be terminal. Need photos of the undercarriage but I bet it isn't pretty. At least they had good photos of the headliner, driver seat, and various external rust spots.

I'm curious if this one cracks $10k...

I've been an avid watcher at bring a trailer for quite a while now. IMHO the guys that bid there are off their rockers. The hysteria of the comments section is both entertaining and maddening.

I’m amused by one of the commenters on the BaT auction (who actually owned one for many years) complaining that the 500E is not fast by today’s standards. Um, it’s 25 years old. It was very fast when new, and from 30-100mph will still leave the vast majority of new cars well behind. And who would buy this car if the primary motivqtion is to be “fast by today’s standards”? Using that as your criterion, I guess you’d rather have [generic top trim new car] than:

    - Porsche 993 or earlier 911, 928 or 944
    - BMW E28 or E34 M5, E30 or E36 M5, or E24 M6
    - Toyota MR2 or MKIII or earlier Supra
    - Honda S2000, Acura Integra
    etc etc

A lot of people would rather have newer 911 then like 1997 TT S because its newer and "better"

That car will be relisted next Spring / Summer with a $20k/$25k price tag (after a $5k to $7k investment), will sell for between $15k and $18k, and the today's buyer will be the happiest seller in the world because they didn't lose their shirt.

Or, it'll be a very good driver (after a $10k investment) for someone who doesn't use it much, and they'll be happy with it for the next 5-10 years.

Given those options, I think $12k today was actually about the right number.

If this trend continues, when I get my well-sorted rust-free 1992 listed for sale, I might get mid 20's for it!

I went to see this car in person and it certainly doesn't need a bunch of money thrown at it. It's a well sorted car already. It ran just as good both my 500e's id say it ran as good as my 400e and that car is completly sorted. Im actually a bit disapointed my bid wasnt enough. As car as the rust on the car it was minimal. Easy fix stuff and I hate fixing rust but this one wasn't bad.
