I have some photos on this car, courtesy of Mike Kelly, who got them from the owner.

Jeez....whats with those coolant overflow tanks?? Do they come pre-yellowed from the factory? I would think a car with this low mileage it would still be white.

That's an ongoing mystery. But yes, it seems they were pre-yellowed from the factory, lol. New ones are bright white.

I just a few months ago purchased a new overflow tank for my 560SEC ... they are nice and white, and rather cheap (at least for those cars) too. When you replace the tank it's probably a good time to replace the coolant level sensor with a new one, too. Those are inexpensive.

Exactly what I need to do (got the new tank, delivered late after the coolant was flushed and renewed already, so need to install and top up when I find time) , get a new sensor and cap as well.

Just take a turkey baster or siphon and remove the fluid from the tank and disconnect the bottom hose, that's all you need to do to replace it. No need to bother with the radiator as long as you keep the bottom hose to the overflow tank elevated. A long siphon will help. Probably only need to remove 2-3 liters total. Not too bad of an operation.

What do you think is a fare offer on the car? $36k seems a bit pricey to me.

Agreed at the 36 grand being overly optimistic. I'd say 30 grand is more in line for today's climate. Who knows, someone might jump at it at 36 grand tho....I would say this falls into a good 'collector's catagory (one not being driven much)

A local guy with 27K miles on his 94' only got 26 grand a few years ago but his had an accident/repaint which turned off alot of people (understandably).

Mileage this low makes the $36k pricetag completely legit. I mean really, anyone seriously interested in a collector-quality no-miles car like this, are they going to quibble over a couple grand? That's covered transport cost, sheesh. Disclaimer: This assumes the car is MINT with zero issues, cosmetic or mechanical. IMO, it's definitely worth low $30's.

It really depends on how much one "values" that odometer. It's undoubtedly low, but who knows, maybe people looking for a real time capsule want a 4- or even 3-digit odo reading. OTOH if you want to drive the car, maybe you can look at one that's been driven a bit more like DrNo's 47k miler at $22.5K (or at least get a sense of the depreciation you'll hit just from driving 20-30k miles)

16k miles in 18 years? That's just too low for a driver like me, if that makes any sense at all.

Agree 100%. Time-capsule cars are not ideal for drivers, they are more for collectors, or garage queens. For a driver I'd rather pay $10-$15k and get a higher-miles car that is mechanically perfect, although probably just average cosmetically. There are not a lot of buyers in the >$30k range other than collectors, IMO.

I think the price is to high. Upper 20's at best would be a good deal. 20-30k miles and asking $22.5. I do not think the difference in milage justifies $14k. I am sure the car needs motor & tranny mounts which is not a cheap fix.
I would drive the hell out of this car personally. They are meant to be driven. The milage will always be low for the age of the car. I doubt the person selling will move to much on pricing.
I would be very tempted in the upper 20's. Wife would kill me though.

I see this issue the way Dave does. There are very few of these cars left with this kind of mileage. If you want one (and there are always collectors that do) you have to pay the price. They really aren't a value for someone looking for a daily driver. About 5 years ago i was considering a legit offer of 32,000.00 when my car had low 40s mileage. It wasn't listed anywhere, the offer came through 500ecstasy. The buyer bought another car before i made up my mind. Silly as it may seem, collectors want low mileage and originality. I think he may get what He's asking. Although as jimbo mentioned it's 2012 and He may have to be patient.

I have to agree with GSXR on this one -- ~$35-36 range is legit and appropriate for a true time-warp documented car, assuming it's got everything and NO wants. A collector who wants a time warp will pay whatever for the animal.

We all know Bob Hatch would be asking upwards of $50K for this car, perhaps even $60K....and he'd likely clear well upwards of $40K on it ! So I have to say that the $36K price is likely realistic for the right buyer. And I'll bet if this car is the shin-diddily-dubizzle that it appears to be, that it will be on the market for a very short time before getting snapped up.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

    Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black Pearl/Black 16,000 miles, $36k (Virginia)

    Hello:

I bought my 8500 mile 93 036 about 2.5 years ago for $28.5 it was on eBay with a "buy it now," so I did. It is Malachite/Mushroom (Parchment-Biege-Light Ivory-Whatever Dave Says it is, etc.).
I went to look at it; had a MB dealer look at it and an independent MB specialist look at it, all did a PPI.
    All said it was "perfect."
I now have 30K miles on it...
What I wanted was an "as new" unmodified 036 to see what it was like to drive one "back in the day." I probably ruined the collector value of it but the Smiles per Mile made up for it.
I am not sure what a shin-diddily-dubizzle is but I think my car just might be one of those. I will have to ask Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop when he gets out, if anyone - he would know.
The one or two of you unfamiliar with Mr. Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop can check out the following link: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_1...-bop-arrested/
    Kind Regards,

    Ron

Yeah, there's certain things that are just not worth arguing about, but I get my subtle mushroom digs in once in a while...

As for the shin-diddily-dubizzle, it's a combination of this and this.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Ditto...buying an 036 and letting it just sit in the garage is sacrilege.

Time capsuling is for Duesenberg's or 300SL's.

I never get peeps who have car's that are meant to be driven just sitting in the garage. Then you talk about the car with them and ask "So, how does it drive?", just to hear "I haven't driven it for 3 years now, but I do sit in it while I cycle the liquids"....
