I am planning to see this car this weekend...or asap. Itsa about 1/2 hour away from me haus.

Funny thing is not 2 or 3 weeks after I bought mine in 1999 this car was on Wayne Carini's lot at F40 for sale, it had low miles and was well out of my reach $$$-wise at that time but I was kinda pissed b/c I had been half looking for a smoke silver 500E (I LOVED my old smoke silver 190E 2.6). Such a great color.

FWIW, this car is no high mile beater/turd...it's part of a Doctors collection and has been serviced by perhaps the most respected MB tech in CT...Art Foster. Not sure if my wife will divorce me if I come home with it ! ...but its not like the 30+ grand G-wagens she has been pining about getting lately.

Only the $30+K ones?!? I've been tolerating pining on the 60+K ones for years now.... I just throw meine Frau the keys to the E500 for a day or two and that shuts her up for a few weeks.... a full tank of "lachgas" helps this anti-pining effect last even longer...

I will get the VIN...butofcourse. It needs something he said...but he didn't tell me over the phone....hence the kind asking price.

60K $ G-wagens? Nope, I can't even think about those (unless I hit Lotto; then its the new G65 for Jimbo's old lady)...I won't pay over 30 grand for any used rolling bag of depreciation ! I see a few 05's in the 25-30K $ range (wholesale) lately but I can't quite drop the hammer on one just yet....and the older ones don't do it for me/us.

How kind of you to let your woman drive the E500 Gerry (hopefully the NOS isn't on-line for her use !) The 500E is all MINE, she doesn't even like driving it (her AWD, chipped 6 speed allroad with 300+ hp is a hoot to drive in itself)...and she sure likes taking out the RS6 when I'm not around. Which is OK, it still has some value in it if it gets smacked.

I actually have a difficult time prying her fingers off the lenkrad when she does drive it. Two weekends ago I let her take it up to Dallas for a 3-day convention+weekend trip with a friend who was in town, so had to "slum it" in the 560SEC+SEL.

But we will get a G in the future .. gotta get the land purchased & the new house+shop designed and built first....

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Smoke Silver / Cream-Beige, 201kmi, $5900 (Waterford, Connecticut)

I saw this car last nite, it shows very well inside and out. Needs little things like an antennae (stuck up), mirror adjustment stalk is busted off, rims need to be refinished big time. Big item would be an exhaust (has a leak or 2, sounds BEEFY). Was rear ended but repaired very nicely IMO, nice paintwork...and the 500E badge was mounted correctly !

It does have a RennTECH chip, ASR defeat, and the tips (not the can). Has a new PPG windshield, wrong euro lites (but originals are included) and a nice Kenwood stereo (original head and changer also included).

I am trying to bring it up to the shop to get it on the lift this week to check out the motor and underside. Recent cap and rotors, radiator too. Nice car regardless of the miles (which is quite normal , if not low, for a 20 year old car)

G, I will PM you its VIN...it's actually not the car I thought it was...its from Kansas originally, Dr. bought in 1996 at 60K site unseen and has enjoyed it ever since. Open wallet maint regime, he doesn't have records...but Art, his mechanic does.

Sounds promising for the bucks asked for, I'd think the GSXRman would be all over this.

Thx for the info -- I'll add it to the db. I did some catch-up work on the DB/registry over the weekend, and added info on about 10 new cars. Maybe after another 9 years, I'll be close to having all of the US cars..... except those wrecked.

How many cars on your DB now G?

Dave, PM me if you are interested....I'll give you all the details. Actually, if anyone is interested I'll help ya' out. This is a solid car IMO and with some $$ in cosmetic parts and an exhaust it'll be a great driver for many years to come.

5K oil changes with M1 I forgot to add. I didn't notice any motor leaks from the topside either...like the cams seals , valve covers etc.

Detailed data (i.e. photos, auction data, descriptions, stuff beyond just MB data card info):

    1991s: ~25 cars
    1992s: ~350 cars
    1993s: ~200 cars
    1994s: ~160 cars

So, detailed data on around 725 cars, mostly US cars, gathered over the course of ~9 years.
Not too bad considering official US imports of ~1,505 cars.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

I was in the area tonight and checked the car out. It is everything Jim mentioned it to be. The only thing I noticed is the front shocks & mounts are likely shot. The car sounded great with the exhaust leaks and drove nicely. This is definitely a good buy.

I saw this car today and took it to Carriage House MB for a ppi...and decided not to buy. The issue for me was rust. There are rusts spots: (1) where the passenger side rear fender meets the c-pillar; (2) passenger side rear wheel arch; (3) passenger side rear door sill; and (4) frame seam underneath the car just to the right of the gas tank (if looking toward the front of the car). There are a number of cosmetic issues both inside and out but easily addressed over time. Overall, the current owner has only taken decent care of the car (parked outside for at least a couple years). For example, the driver seat bolster seam is splitting. Mechanically the car is in relatively good shape and the MB shop quoted $3,800.00 to sort all of it out...which could be done much cheaper by a good indy mechanic. I just could not quantify the risk around the rust...maybe someone else who has body shop experience can.

For that money the risk is negligible, try running a car in Europe and then talk about rust. Seat bolster splitting is normal for that mileage. Perhaps you should think again.

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Smoke Silver / Cream-Beige, 201kmi, $5900 (Waterford, Connecticut)

Actually, the owner reported to me after Greg's PPI that he's is taking the car off the market and going to fix it up...to either keep it or sell it next year. Which is good to hear he wants to do all that....the car def has alot of life left in it.

A decent driver for that 5gs and like I said...I think 2-2500$ later the car will be a sweet buy fixed up at $7K-ish. For a MB dealer to come back with (only) 3800$ to address the issues isn't that bad IMO. Not sure if that included the rusted areas from the accident fix....did it Greg?

I sorta wish I did bring it up to my guy's shop for a on-lift inspection before Greg came up, perhaps saving him a trip. My bad.

PPI revealed the following: re-seal p/s resevoir ($350), r/r left valve cover gasket ($250), front shocks ($965), front brake pads/rotors w/ re-pack wheel bearings ($775), resonator ($1,000) but probably half that at muffler shop, belt $175, hood pad ($260). The issue for me came down to rust. If I had bought the car I would, obviously, address all mechanical issues, address all cosmetic issues (detailed above by Jimbo) and then address the rust problems. And the rust is just something that I can not quantify.

I have to agree -- given the choice of buying a rust or rust-free car, I'll choose the rust-free car EVERY time. Once a car has rust, it's only a matter of time until it returns again no matter what climate the car lives in. It's why all of my own cars are and have always been original West Coast cars.

    I agree about the rust.

The mechanical stuff was all pretty minor IMO. Those problems could be fixed for under $1k total in parts as DIY projects. Labor costs will kill ya!!

Yes, it was up for sale last year...a few of us like Greg, Cory and Mark already checked it over. He did do a good amount of maint. work on it since then.

(Real) Good driver car...but still has a rear issue with a previous accident damage and rust where the repair welds were done underneath. I'm sure one can get it for under 5 if you come with cash. (Dr.) Jim is reasonable man and would like the car to go to a good owner, rather than to sell it only to get parted (which is what I would do since its smoke silver and the M119 W124 wagon will be smoke silver)....but whatever you do with it is your business IMO. Just tell him you want to restore it and he'll love ya'.

    Re: FS: 1992 500E 202kmi, $5,500 (Waterford, CT)

The owner lives right on the Long Island Sound. Parked his 036 outside due to a lack of garage space. Rust set in...

I may be interested in this car. I have someone coming with cash to buy my second car tomorrow.

Jim is quite the wonderful salesman. I called Jim on Saturday morning to come see the car with cash in hand and he responded to me hours later once I was already busy with other things. When I originally spoke to him he claimed no one was interested in the car and that “it was the hardest time he’s ever had selling a car”. I spoke to him again Monday and we made arrangements to meet in CT Monday night. I grabbed the cash and drove 2 hours to go meet him. When I was 3 blocks away he called me and told me that he had other buyers there with cash. I arrived and he introduced me to the other potential buyers (who he hadn’t mentioned at all prior) as if it were to spark some sort of parking lot bidding war over the car.

I was really turned off by the entire situation and how poorly he handled it. I also found it really odd that his timing was so precise to have two separate buyers both drive 2 hours to meet at the same time. All he had to say was that someone called and was coming to take a look and I would have waited to hear the outcome on my couch in Boston. Instead he decided to let us both drive. Needless to say he should let someone else handle his car sales because he clearly has no clue.

I can find out who bought it, if it matters. One guy that contacted me on it was going to part it out to build another car he had waiting...but dang Andre, that really sucks what happened. Are you living in Boston now? 'Wonderful salesman ' is pretty funny sarcasm, I hope you told him that in person ! I would have....

FWIW Andre...you really didn't want his car IMO...did you? This car was a far cry from the nice MBs (and 500E) you were driving previously....unless you were buying it as a project or a part out. Tho, for a DD in Beantown it might have done that job well.

In all honesty I did not want to say much as I was really turned off when I found out what was going on and how he was "rushing" me to buy it, I was even contemplating on giving him the $$ after seeing the car for less then 5 minutes but was completely turned off when I asked him to go for a Test drive and he hesitated (and you could see he was not to thrilled as he was scared the other guy was going to leave) well guess what its not a $100K car but still if im buying a car I'm not going to be rushed into dishing out the $$$ before checking the car out (it was dark out and we were in a parking lot).

Jimbo I was really looking for a daily as I have the CL55 for the weekends so if it had some rust on it did not bother me at all since I planned on driving it all year round and being that the roads are covered in salt in Beantown it would not bother me much. The car ended up in NYC and im not sure if the new owner hangs around the internet.
