    First Gear Start Valve Body

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/200827315068

Listing does not say if its a 400e valve body or a Renntech modified valve body, so proper inquires should me made assuming anyone is interested.

Perhaps he's updated the listing, but it seems to indicate it is for a 124.036

That's David Hendy. Quite likely to be from a 400E/E420 but should bolt into any 500E/E500 tranny for full-time FGS if desired.

The 400e/E420 valve body will fit the .036 transmission and give you FGS. Or it could be a .036 valve body modified for FGS. In reality, I guess where it is from is irrelevant but I have come across a few "modified" valve body's (for FGS) that were not modified correctly. I would prefer to purchase a stock 400e/E420 valve body that no one has dinked around with.

I bought a FGS valve body from Dave and it is now installed. It is without question one of the best mods that I have done to any car. It really is just great. I highly recommned it if you are considering a FGS.

Re: First Gear Start Valve Body

Do the S-class 400 and S class 500's of the same era share the same transmission as the e420 and 400e, meaning, will those valve bodies work as FGS also?
What is the going rate for a 400e/e420 valve body? Just inquiring so I have an idea at what I am looking at if I go that route. Cheers from San Diego CA

Re: First Gear Start Valve Body

AFAIK, only the 400E valvebody has FGS. The W140 units are all second-gear start like the 500E. Pricing seems to be in the $400-$500 range (asking price, dunno about actual sale prices).

There's also some question if an early valve body can work in a late transmission, or vice-versa. There was some sort of change in late 1992 or early 1993 (approx) and I'm not sure what the details are.

Re: First Gear Start Valve Body

    Hello.

From what I have read does the 400E VB (valvebody) always start in 1.st, while the E420 VB starts in 2.nd. but shifts down with a slight throttle pressue. (..at least does my friends E420 behave that way)

    Anyone here to confirm this?

Re: First Gear Start Valve Body

I have driven numerous 400e's and E420's, all start in first gear. I wouldn't be surprised that transmissions have been replaced in some 400e/e420's with the wrong transmission and/or wrong valve body.

This happens quite often in the 300e causing confusion as to when Mercedes switched from second gear start to FGS.

My valve body is from a 1995 E420, only starts in first gear.

Arnt, only the USA-spec and Japan-spec 124.034 chassis came with 2.24 gears in the differential, and all had 1st gear start, for all years of production. What Rik and Steve state above is correct for USA-spec 400E/E420.

However, the Euro-spec 124.034 cars had 2.65 gears... I am NOT sure if Euro-spec 400E/E420 start in first gear, but I suspect they do not. I'm almost positive the valve bodies are different part numbers for Europe vs USA/Japan. If so, you'd need to make sure your FGS VB was US/Japan spec.

Some VB's have a part number marked on it that matches the EPC, but some VB's do not have any part number markings... I've seen a 1992 VB that had no visible markings. Most of the newer (1994-up) VB's I've seen have the part number inked on. The casting numbers are useless, btw, I think they all share the same castings.

Re: First Gear Start Valve Body

Not sure if this helps, the part number for the 1995 E420 valve body is 124-270-6915. Last time I called the stealership for the hell of it, the cost of the rape was $800.00.

Sorry for my slow response guys - I had to get some night sleep in between my posts here..

Well, that is an explanation Dave, because I asked my E420 friend here specifically about the FGS and shifting on his car. Steve, you may recall we had some Emails about this a couple of years back, and your mehcanic confirmed that the PN had to end on ...6915. I started my hunt but didn't wait long until Jeff came up with one for sale. At that time I wasn't aware of these US/Japan vs. Euro specs, so I guess I was the lucky duck picking one from the US then. (The VB is resting here waiting to be installed.) The PN is inked onto mine too.

Put furniture outside, put car inside. Problem fixed. Just be careful if you have family dinner inside the car.
