I'll go for the long shot: 199 uppers with 040 lowers. Or vice-versa. Maybe a nice smoke silver on the lowers for some real contrast!

I will be assembling it over the next week or three, time permitting. I'm still working on cleaning up and replacing some of the old parts.

Thanks Karl, yes, I'm pretty excited. The car looks amazing and I can't wait to put it back together.
The last car I had painted was a Datsun 510 that I did myself way back in the '80s. The E500 came out a little better

Awesome! When done you will have a 20+ year-old car with almost 600k miles on it that looks brand new. How cool is that?

    Glen,

I have been out of touch for a while (6 week vacation & Mediterranean cruise) and just saw your thread come up. It looks great!!! I know you are on top of it and I can't wait to see the results of your efforts up close.

    Re: OWNER - Glen (199)

Putting things back together takes more time than taking them apart. This is partly due to the fact that one doesn't want to scratch the new paint and partly because you need to clean stuff before installing. I did clean parts while the car was away but didn't have time to do everything. Anyway, this morning I was able to install the passenger side quarter window, seals, door handles, and mirror boot.

Glen, for those of us in the future who would like to get our cars painted, I was wondering if you could make a list of all of the items that you remember removing from the car. No hurry, but would definitely be a helpful reference for me.

Perhaps a wiki page would be a place to put it.

    Thanks !

Will do. I should start the list soon before I completely forget what I did, LOL.

Here's the list, hopefully we can fill in the details as time goes on:https://www.500eboard.com/forums/wiki...ping-for-paint

Great story Glen! I got hooked and played hooky from several projects while reading a very cool 199 saga this afternoon. BTW - is it still Thanksgiving? Seems I was going to unearth a car & pay you a visit over the holiday. Cheers !

That is the most important part in a car ! It is really cool you get the new emblems !
Trust me you will enjoy new shiny hood star. Each time I hand wash my 500E I polish all badges (especially hood star) with the white dry cotton. After that I enjoy night driving, hood star shines like a dimond, no kidding !
So do not let water dry on your badges !

    Keep us posted !

Thanks Roma. I tried cleaning up the original star with 587K miles but it just didn't look good so the only solution was to a new one.

The mileage badges look really bad, very faded and worn, I removed them shortly after I got the car. I will keep them but won't put them on. I need to look into getting replacements...

Go to the MBUSA website and look up high mileage awards. If that yields nothing, call the Customer Assistance Center. I'm sure they will supply you with new ones. If none of that works, let me know.

    Re: OWNER - Glen (199)

GSXR got the huge value-added bonus of a grill badge when he bought his "Stig-wagen" .... unfortunately it was quite faded and the paint was peeling. Also the same with the badge I've had on my 560SEC for many years. It added a good $750 to the overall value of the car.

I view the worn mileage badge was a "badge of honor" though.

    Re: OWNER - Glen (199)

I had the brief chance to check out Glen's new-looking 199 car when we "jail broke" it from the five or six weeks at the body shop. It looks really great! They did a really nice job. IT is arrow straight with nicely polished clear and evenly applied metallic charcoal paint.

    Any new progress updates?

still up for lending a hand for any two person tasks.

Did you research any of the clear bra products? Was thinking that 3M spray product would be reall nice, DIY, and modestly priced. A shop applying the product often charges a surprising amount of $ to do it.

Too many variables to say. Best bet is to contact the shop and make an appointment for them to look at your car and give a proper estimate.

Started with a scotch brite and then 80 grit strip and then finished with the scotch brite. Not perfect but good enough until I save up for something better.

I think the ONLY realistic solution for those rusty tips (which will re-rust in the future) is one of those new fifthscaleracer stainless exhausts. You'll get 25+ HP and catch the eye of all the pretty ladies in your neighborhood, too !!

I spent today installing the passenger side cladding, rear bumper and started on the driver side cladding. I wanted to wait until it was done to post a picture but I think it's far enough along to post a couple

I'm definitely considering it. I want to hear it in person though. Since this car will be a daily driver I want it close to stock in terms of volume. Might be a better choice for my silver one...

I'm really happy with the results and can't wait to finish. Luckily, its only cost me $$$, not $$$$

If you ask me, $6,000 is $$$$ and then some! But the results are fantastic. There's a palpable difference between this and a $1k Tijuana pay & spray.

Well, you are right it wasn't cheap but in the grand scheme of things it could have cost a whole bunch more.
