    OWNER - doolar

Hello everybody, been sneaking around here for several years without registering, but finally got to it.

Me and my father has been driving W124´s and W201´s for some years now. Back in 2008 my father bought a 93 500E, nautic blue with blue leather. He´s slowly putting it back to original state, but that´s another story.

Two years later I stumbled across a car in Sweden´s largest classifieds site, a ice blue 1994 E420 W124. I was at the time running a beautiful 300CE that I really loved, but was on a lookout for a V8 W124, of course foremost a .036. But since we have one in the family I also looked for the .034, that is kinda harder to find in a good condition.

So back to the ice blue one, called the owner who bought the car as a "jahreswagen" (year car, used one year by an owner and then traded in, quite popular in Germany) from a dealer in Germany. He is a corporate lawyer based in Sweden but working a lot in Germany, so he wanted an Autobahn express. He bought it, and imported it to Sweden, mainly for tax purposes.

Car is in the beautiful ice blue or perl blau color with code 378. Custom leather interior made by a company in Germany, car was original with grey cloth.
When I bought it it had 315000 kilometers on it (195 731 miles) with an absolute full dealer service history, plus loads of other work done. The man had not spared a cent on it, he had been maticulate.

But after driving it year around in southern Sweden and north Germany rust where coming here and there, nothing big. AC was not working and some other minor things. Took it for a short spin, it was really perfect, as was the price since he had his new E55 AMG on the driveway. Paid him on the spot and went home a happier man.

Since 2010 I have done the following to the car:

Rust fixing and a full respray in original color of course.
    Wiring loom.
Full Sportline conversion including EVERYTHING but the steering box (which I will change aswell).
Feritta stainless exhaust with race cat custom built on the car.
    Restored AC.
Plus loads more of "minor" things.
Bought a set of brake calipers from GSXR a while ago, will get fitted this winter. (Brembo ones for 334 mm discs, you know the ones)

    Some pics then:

Before Sportline conversion but after paint job.

Brand new MB original rear window, expensive but so nice!

    Some interior pics.

After Sportline, it has set quite a bit now.

Had to get a vanity plate.

Link to over 100 pics from the paintjob and rust restoration:

Today I've mounted the AMG fender widening kit to make room for Brabus Monoblock III 17" 8" wide with ET30:

If you're intrested I have a couple of hundred more pics here:

    Re: OWNER - doolar

Thank you all for the nice welcome!

The interior was as said above custom made by on the previous owners request. He wanted the look of the new car then, the W210, so it was made to look abit like that, but still using the original seats. It is really a sublime job, at first I thought it was a Mercedes special order, such is the quality of the job and materials. The interior has been in the car for all but 30000 kms of the cars life and still is in great condition.

Only thing I've done is rebuild the drivers seat pad with new padding and foams.

This car is used as a hobby car under my ownership, so I take the winter time to restore what is needed and also add some modifications as I see fit. This winter I will do the following:

Fit the Silver Arrow brake kit.
Restore the Brabus rims and fit them, they need a total restoration as they have quite a bit of curb rash and the paint is severly chipped.

Last year I started a project to add a volt meter and oil temp guage in the ashtray. Tried like hell to get the Brabus Tempamatic kit but it's near impossible.
I'm using VDO Vision guages, they are very similar to the original cluster design (also made by VDO):

Guages and an ashtray assembly from our spares car, keeping the original ashtray intact.

Wiring left, and securing/fitting the ashtray in the compartment. I'm using a VDO sensor in the oil drain plug.

    Hello doolar.

That was a very nice ride, great color and condition!
It is really nice to see people taking care of the V8 W124s around, and don't let the mileage be a hinder.

And welcome to a very special place to be for us owners of these cars.

    Greetings from Norway!

Kind words from all of you!

Went to the US for the first time three years ago and found a warm and friendly people everywhere I went. Quite a different story from what you often get in the crappy media. Super impressed!

A side note - Johan H here on the forums, I bought his 300E earlier this year and have some plans to bring that car to a strict original state. It is a very early M103 car, delivered in august of -85. Also fitted with 5 speed manual tranny, not too common.

I could not have think of any better person to take care of my old baby! I miss it a lot but i know Thomas will take good care of it and keeping it strictly original! It goes really well with the 5-speed manual transmission!

Ok a small update. My AMG Monoblocks were stolen a few weeks ago, so the move to the new wheels are kinda urgent.

Started with the SA kit the other day:

The parking brake was in dire need of a rebuild:

So now I'm eagerly waiting for my new tires to arrive, Michelin Primacy HP. Tomorrow I'll finish the brake job and a few other odds and ends, then it's time for a MOT.

Work with the SA-kit complete bar the braided hoses that will be fitted in the winter.

    Springmeet in Sweden:

A tad to wide in the rear, no scraping though. Perhaps I'll have to massage that fender lip a bit:

Ok so plans for the winter:

    Pass MOT...
Fit Oris original removable trailer hitch - got it from Ebay.de, just needs some TLC and a new harness. Almost complete:

    Fit the Wavetrac dif.
Fit auxillary pre-heater, Mercedes/Webasto original accessory, got one from Ebay.de plus I have one in the spare 400E.
Finish with the extra dials in the ashtray, only wiring remains.
    Plus some other tidbits.

    I'll keep you posted!

    Re: OWNER - doolar

I'm adding what I call "W124 illumination package" to my car, consisting of door courtesy lights, illuminated sun visors and rear reading lights. Started on the rear reading lights today, I ordered the cable harness for it a year ago, it was a shockingly inexpensive $20, stunned that it was available too. Not an issue if it hadn't been, but still.

Checked the wiring, and removed the plastic cladding off the c-pillars. No broken clips!:

I was under the impression that Mercedes didn't put any markings on the backside of the c-pillar cladding, I've read it several places methinks, but to my joy they are marked, albeit very lightly. Enough to make out in good lighting, after that I applied drill and saw:

Not too visible markings, but they're there:

    Reading light in place:

One side finished, one to go, then I have to thread the cable harness through the headliner, and reattach everything.

Reading lights done! Not fun at all with the headliner and the wiring, but I sorted it. Also I discovered that my panels do have broken clips. But I managed to get the panels in place ok, maybe I'll repair them later, there's an excellent guide here on the boards.

    Sorry for the crappy photos:

I ordered some as well and am going to try it on my 560SEC. I'll post up results when I do - will probably be a few weeks before I get to this job due to travel.

Started work on the trailer hitch assembly, disassembled, sand blasted and got a first coat of rust protection:

Cleaning of the hitch and the hitch connector (sorry don't know the correct terminology in English, but you know what I mean):

Hitch connector after degreasing and then some acid:

On this occation I used a Danish (not the pastry...) product called "Kalcinol". It's about 35% acids, mainly phosphorous acid. It is very effective on stainless steel for removing non-grease dirt and pitting. I nowadays work at at technical recovery company so all of a sudden I've got access to all the goodies.

Well none of my cars have a hitch. It's plenty useful now and then. I found this original removable hitch cheap on Ebay.de, we had an Oris hitch on a now deceased 300TE and it is a very nice installation, almost not visible at all when you remove the hook. And a fun project as well.

Also good for a bike rack for instance. It's rated for 1900 kg (almost 4200 lbs) on the hook, which is pretty good if I need to pick up a donor/bastler fahrzeug.

But to be honest, it's mainly because I love the engineering in these hitches. (And I already have the rear springs for a hitch car.)

Not to good condition, but no cracks, so I'll probably be able to restore it. It's Hella brand, manufacured '94.

Work begun on the Anhängerkupplung, started off with adding the thickest spring pads for the rear. After that, it was time for some disassembly:

    Lots of bits and pieces:

Ok trailer hitch aficinados, here goes!

The last missing pieces arrived from Das Vaterland:

The classic rust trap on 034/036, but mine's fine:

Heat shield above rear muffler removed, no rust protection whatsoever, so found a few rust spots (which I tended to ofc, teh humanity if not):

    Spare wheel compartment looks fine:

Time to remove som rust protection:

Drill 18 mm holes for screws:

Two of these reinforcement bars go on each side:

But first, moar hoals: (here you can spot some of the rust)

Screw bridge for the reinforcement bars:

    Bar on:

Reinforcement banana bars on both sides:

The premier of the hook (patent pending):

    Cables:

Very nice of Mercedes-Benz to create space for the cables:

Rear seat and backrest out, same with driver seat, to be able to feed the cable into the cable slots:

Cables again, into the fusebox, and for control lighting and brake light switch:

    Control light placement:

Finally, lets make a cut out in the rear bumber, ouch:

The only thing missing now is this covering for the cutout, of course its NLA:

    Stickerbombing the trunk:

And finally a control of the work done, approved and the details will now be entered into the cars data with the motor authority:

Also changed engine oil, filter, cleaned out the window washer fluid container and gave it some new rubbers. Finally, replaced the filters for the HVAC.

    About time for the filters:

Pretty shiny for an original container:

Finally found a panel with all button cut-outs. This one happens to never been fitted too, only minor storage scratches:

No wear in the plastic circles tell the story of no use:

The two more cut-outs from the panel I've got will be used for residual heat button, and a door lock switch probably.
