    Broken Expansion Tank Nipple

It's time to change my expansion tank. There is a metal sleeve inside the nipple, but evidently that doesn't stop someone from cracking the plastic around it when they torque the hose clamp screw down.

Parts.com had the best price on the coolant tank at $104.40, as opposed to $131.16 from autohausaz. I ordered the coolant sensor O-ring and snap ring just to be on the safe side.

This is definitely the Achilles' Heel of the expansion tank -- Kind of like the 90 degree elbow on the radiator. It's just a matter of time before it cracks.

At least the white tank will freshen up the inside of the engine bay.

    Re: Broken Expansion Tank Nipple

Bummer! I've not yet seen a failure at this location but it doesn't surprise me. I would highly recommend a new level sensor (OE or Hella), and also a new cap (OE or Reutter), be installed at the same time (assuming they have not been recently replaced). The sensor should come with a new O-ring, btw. The price on these tanks doubled last January, ugh.

Wow, Dave's right. I payed about $65 back in July of 2012. $100+ is too much. Looks like when this one gets dirty I'll be busting out the paint gun. I've always liked the flat black of the w140 tanks.

The sensor DOES come with a new o-ring, though the o-ring is also available as a separate part.

    Ask me how I know

Yes, I ordered the O-ring without the sensor. The sensor was $22 and since mine is operating okay, and the tank was $104, I decided to skip it. It's a two-minute change anyway. Watch, mine will probably break now that I said that.

When I pulled the plug off the sensor a few days ago, one of the 4mm pins pulled out of the sensor. I thought I could seal it with some RTV, but that was wishful thinking and there is coolant seeping out at a very slow rate. You were right again, Dave. So was I, to the extent that I said it would probably break.

D'OH! Sorry to hear that, Jon. FYI, the aftermarket Hella sensor is an acceptable alternative to OE. IIRC, the OE sensor even had the Hella logo. (?)

Thanks, Dave. I was in a jam and had to order one from Autohausaz. I couldn't afford to wait the usual week + it has been taking to get parts from parts.com. Unfortunately, Autohausaz only offered a Uro or Meisersatz and both are on the "never use" list. Knowing that Uro is the next best thing to using the broken part that came off the car, I went with Meisersatz, if nothing more than to stop the leak until I have more time to deal with it. Hopefully, not even Meisersatz could screw up something as simple as a coolant sensor, but I guess I'll find out on Tuesday.

I hope the wheels don't come off your car and the transmission doesn't fail as your car's reaction to having a part on it from the "Do Not Buy" list.

The chicks tend to notice this type of stuff too ... having substandard parts on the car. It's why a lot of the Diesel guys on PeachParts aren't getting laid, because they insist on using URO. Trucktec, Meistersatz, APA, FEQ, and Hamburg Tech parts.

Generally, I have found that AHAZ and parts.com orders take about the same time to arrive. Meaning, I order on a Monday morning, from both firms simultaneously, and both will arrive on Thursday or Friday. Unless something has to come from Germany, which is generally fairly rare. Of all of the dozens of parts I have ordered through parts.com for my M104 rebuild, only ONE part has had to come from Germany .... the replacement cam bearing cap bolts.

Don't forget to check Amazon too. They have a Hella sensor for about $24 with free shipping. And of course, there's always the dealer for small items like this.

IIRC... someone mentioned the O-ring included with the Mizersatch may not be optimal. If you have an OE O-ring, I'd use that on it. The sensor itself, as you say, should be difficult to screw up (although I'm confident Uro could screw it up royally).

I keep at least one sensor (OE or Hella) in stock... when it gets used, I get another to keep on the shelf.

At least I was smart enough to have ordered two (factory) O-rings when I ordered the recovery tank.

Thanks, Glen. Parts.com wanted $22 for the sensor. I was just too cheap to order it. Now, I paid $12 for shipping from Autohaus.

Thanks for putting "the parts list" together.
It has saved me from ordering junk Chinese parts many times.

And yes, Jon, your engine just might explode with any "do not buy" parts.

That's okay. I've spent a career operating equipment with unapproved parts. What could possibly go wrong?

The vendor parts list is one page that I find myself consistently referring back to. I wish I had done this before ordering that Meisershitz sensor.

I had to do mine in the spring, OE Mercedes tank

Then in August, the water pump, did a Graf pump, Behr thermostat and G-05 coolant.

If I recall, the water pump on the 93 400E was tough because you can't get the pump off without pulling the crank damper off and that required removing the crank bolt (at least that's how mine was). Did you have to take your damper off to get to the pump bolts?

For M119's through model year 1994, you only need to remove the damper+pulley, which is attached to the hub with six smaller bolts.

Around start of production in 1995 model year (FSM says after 08/1994), MB changed to a single-piece integrated hub, balancer, and pulley. This is more work to R&R and the flywheel lock is highly recommended.

FSB job 03-3420 (balancer) and 20-2100 (pump).

I've used the Meisersatz sensor before without a problem. Note that the o-ring is the wrong size that comes with it.. you need to order the oring if you use the Meisersatz sensor.

Gerry becareful with even OE bolts for the cams- even MB subsitutes full threaded bolts for shoulder bolts sometimes. On my OM617, I had to find a used bolt b/c the factory subs were wrong.

    Re: Broken Expansion Tank Nipple

Just a heads up with the 2014 price increases at parts.com, I ran some parts through their system tonight and found that some of the parts have actually decreased in price.

The coolant reservoir that I bought four weeks ago for $104.40 is now selling for $82.80.

    http://www.parts.com/parts/1995/Merc...pansion%20tank

Likewise, the crank position sensor that was $200.40 a few months ago is only $177.60 today.

    http://www.parts.com/parts/index.cfm...earch&siteid=2

So, I guess the good news is that it is not an across-the-board price increase for all the parts.

    Re: Broken Expansion Tank Nipple

There is more on this internal (hidden) coolant expansion tank in the fenderwell at this post.

It is a very good idea to replace the braided hose from the main coolant tank to this hidden expansion tank, because the hose gets completely fossilized with time, exposure and engine bay heat. And it's not one of those things where you can readily just cut off an inch from the end of the hose and re-attach it like new. You really have to replace the entire hose. It's not a huge job; the how-to should provide adequate guidance for this.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

    Clark,

Looks like the price of the expansion tank has gone up a couple of bucks since I did the hose replacement job back in September

What was the cost back then?

EDIT: read your excellent write up on replacing the hose.

I have to do that on mine. I "may" get a new tank for $26
