That would be cool, but what I'd like even more is a mirror with a built-in camera for a dashcam, so you wouldn't need to suction-cup a camera on the windshield, or attach to the dash. (I know, I know... just dreaming out loud here!)

These are available, but the bracket and wiring is an issue

The Clown Nose mirror has a alarm LED on the bottom that would need to be hooked up to an existing pulsating alarm LED signal (like the factory in dash alarm led). It also uses two way glass, so the compass is not visible till it is turned on. The compass variance sensor is also integrated into the circuit board, where as the 2m1 is older technology and uses a external compass variance sensor (which I relocate inside the mirror casing). The 2m1 also has a visible compass window as the glass isn't two way, it has a reflective coating on the back that is removed so the compass can shine through. Other than that, both are auto dimming and provide Homelink functionality.

Finishing up the last mirror on the list, so consider this a "last call" before I pack everything up and put it in storage.

Do you have any more of the clown nose mirror? I would take one for my 500TE project. Would need shipping to the UK.

Mirror looks great Rik, thanks again! Quick question, is there a trick to getting the wire from the dome light to the mirror mounting area? I saw the youtube video about the install and about removing the plastic connector and all but a couple of weeks ago I was trying to wire in a radar detector using the same wires from the sunroof connector and I could not figure out how to get the wire thru. It was just too tight and there was a metal piece in there that was in the way so I just put everything back together and figured I'd just wait until I got the mirror and try again.

There's a couple different ways to do this, but I used a long 1/8" drill bit to punch a couple of holes in the sheet metal to make the wiring easier. This avoids wires being pinched between other items. Guess I should take a photo next time I have a mirror removed...

Difficult to get a drill in that area BTW, I route the wires between the headliner and the sheet metal. So once you remove the OE mirror and mirror mount, you should be able to pull the headliner down a bit to feed the wire harness through.

This isn't a W124 but most of the steps apply.

I recently installed one of these mirrors using a passthru hole from the sunroof switch to the mirror. I can upload a HOW-TO if anyone is interested. LMK.

If you have a small right angle drill, you can make a hole but on most W124's, there isn't one. Believe the W126 has one though.

I pulled the headliner down a bit like you said and pulled the wire through. Worked like a charm. Love the mirror. One problem I’m having is getting it to work with the front gate in my community. Sometimes it works after I hold the button down for a while (10-15 secs) and sometimes the gate won’t open. Garage doors work great and the autodimming is wonderful since I removed the tint. Thanks again!

The standard procedure to follow is to hold down the button you want to program till it starts blinking slowly, then press and hold the button of the remote (while holding the Homelink button still), keep the remote close to the mirror, once the mirror LED starts blinking fast, continue holding the Homelink button till the LED goes out completely. The Homelink module should successfully lean the remote code. Next step is to put your garage door opener/gate into "lean mode" and then press and hold the associated Homelink button till your garage door opener/gate tells you it has accepted the new code. This is required due to rolling code technology used in the systems.

The range of the Homelink module is limited and can be affected by things hanging off your rear view mirror (blocking the signal) and metallic film tint applied to your windshield, the signal is also not a wide beam type of signal, it projects pretty much straight out of the back of the mirror casing and in some situations, you need to have your vehicle pointed at the garage door, within 10-15 feet or so. Results seem to vary from situation to situation with different factors affecting the performance.

Also, some garage door remotes/gate remotes don't send out a constant signal when you hold down the button, they do for a bit, but not long enough for the Homelink to properly lean the code. In those situations, press the button for a bit, then release and press/hold and repeat till you get a confirmation that the Homelink has learned the code. This mainly seems to apply to Canada, but there might be situations in the US that are applicable.

If you did not put your gate into learn mode and then lean the Homelink to the gate, then that could very well be the issue.

    Looking forward to receiving mine.

I checked and my home gates are 433 MHZ here in the UK. Do you think it may work?

Probably not, the standard frequency range is from 286-299mhz. Although, your particular mirror is much newer than the 2m1, so since it has not actually been tested in the UK, there is always the possibility that the frequency range of the newer Homelink module have been extended to cover world use. Please test and report back.

Sure, finishing up a large order for Jon Hodgeman this week and have a few others queued for build, so it will be a couple of weeks before I can ship it out. Paypal is rik@2phast.com

    Found this video

You should be able to apply this to your garage door, just like the guy in the video did.

Here is another video on the LiftMaster 365lm Universal remote control, which includes how to install it.

Since the guy in the video is in the UK and has a US Homelink, seems like a good route to go to make use of the Homelink in the mirror. FYI, I don't offer mirrors without Homelink since they cost just as much as the ones with Homelink. Use to be a time when they were much cheaper, but not anymore.

Rik, can you still get Homelink mirrors without a compass? I vaguely recall those were becoming scarce as well...

Yes, those are available if your interested, they are built on the same technology platform as the clown nose variant (gntx-480), just with no compass and no alarm LED, just Homelink & auto dimming.
