    500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

Here are photographs of most (if not) all factory stickers on the 500E / E500. Individual, special-model and non-US cars may have different stickers. This is from a typical US-spec 1994 model car.

Hope this helps people in their quest for the factory stickers and/or in reproducing the stickers that are no longer available.

For reference, the yellow rectangular emissions sticker, which is found on the radiator brace (core support) under the hood, IS NOT and NEVER HAS BEEN available through MB channels. This sticker is highly restricted in its availability.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

The 92-94 decals may be no longer available, but the '95 is still available... it's not identical but it's pretty close and better than nothing, IMO.

How about the signature sticker on the windshield? Can that be purchased?

No, the "MERCEDES-BENZ product" sticker CANNOT be purchased as it looks on the E500E. It has been replaced by the one they are using on cars now, which has a prominent Daimler signature and a smaller "Mercedes-Benz" at the bottom.

There is also a sticker in use on most MBs today that has a very prominent, bolded script "Mercedes".

The lookalike "DAIMLER-BENZ product" sticker (see below) CAN be purchased. It looks nearly identical except for the different word. That sticker was stopped being used in the 1991 time frame.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Mercedes-Benz sticker (current & supersedes earlier sticker)

Here is the old sticker as originally found on the E500E (no longer available):

Thanks for the info. Gerry! I'm fairly new to the site but it seems great!
Purchased my 93 500E last Winter and just starting to get aquainted with it.
I'm sure I'll need plenty of guidance....................

BTW, the yellow emissions decal is installed when the vehicle arrives in the USA, but before the vehicles are shipped to the dealers.

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

Wanting to place the windshield signature sticker. I see above that the original "Mercedes-Benz Product" sticker is no longer available. Is "Daimler-Benz Product" sticker still available? I do not see it at MB club shop. Still available at MB dealers? Does anyone have its part number?

Where precisely is the correct factory placement location? I have this photo below from Hatch's notorious Al Unser Jr car. To me it looks slightly too low and doesn't even appear to be "straight." Were these stickers applied by US dealers or factory? Would appreciate if anyone could post "original" factory placement pictures of their windshield corner, perhaps with measurements. Thanks.

    Hi,

I had my valve covers recenty painted so I went to the dealer for a new sticker and I provided the part number shown on the first picture. They gave me what you see on the second one. Does anybody know if the original sticker is NLA and has been substituted by this one?

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

It is likely that is the case if you used the part number specified on the original sticker. MB often does this with stickers -- they are often not available or superseded to other related stickers from other models.

Hopefully someone has more information. Would be interesting to order every sticker (per part number) that is available for an E500E and see what comes back from the dealer.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

Yes, the original yellow valve cover decal is NLA... has been NLA for a number of years now. I tried to order those back in 2004 or 2005 and got a much smaller version, which apparently has been superceded to yet another version as shown in your photo. Very annoying. (EDIT: These are available again as of 2014!)

On a side note, the smoke silver E500 shown in Gerry's first post is likely one of the first 1994 models built, the VIN is even earlier than mine (both were built in July 1993). Also of interest is that the engine number is *later* than mine (numerically). MB apparently didn't always do things in sequence, eh! Or, Hans & Franz were hittin' the bottle on the job...

wonder why the windshield signature/product sticker is not placed on any MB Euro models? I've always noticed them on US models and wondered.

I've found the valve cover sticker on ebay UK. According to the price, they must have been hand painted by Andy Warhol's secret son.

This is easy to figure out -- it says so right on the door plaque (driver's side door). Open the door and look on the black plate, and it should tell you the month and year of manufacture. I can also help, through my database, triangulate this as well.

It is very easy to tell by the VIN what the model year is. In the case of your VIN, it appears that it is a 1994 model (E500).

    Cheers,
    Gerry

    Thanks Gerry....

I guess I am having a senior moment. I know the year my car was manufactured (its in my signature....DOH!). Was looking for the month, just curious whether I have a early or late 1994 E500. I will look on the plate in my door jamb.

Andy, there is nothing in the VIN which indicates build date. The decal in the door jamb will indicate month and year. For your WDBEA36E1RCO87764 car, I'd guess it was late 1993 calendar year (Nov/Dec), give or take a couple months. Maybe early 94 calendar year. The decal will tell you the production month & year (NOT the model year). The EPC datacard codes will tell you the model year for USA & Japan models, code 804 indicates a 1994 model (which would be built between summer 1993 and summer 1994 on the calendar).

If you want the actual DAY the car was completed... you can only get that from a VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry) report from the dealership. My E500 was built July 9, 1993, according to the VMI. Next time you're at the dealer for service (i.e., alignment) ask nicely if they'll print a VMI. MB's new policy is to not let customers get a copy of the VMI, but they might at least show it to you (date is at the very end), or "accidentally" leave a copy on the desk while they turn their back for a sec, if you know what I mean.

Side note - the "0" in your VIN is the number zero, not the letter 'o'.

Thanks for the info, I just helped Andy's secret son (although how he had any offspring is still a mystery....).
GBP 10 is cheap when you consider it's one of the first things you notice when opening the hood, it kind of "makes" the engine compartment IMHO.
Most stickers from M-B are in the $5-10 range anyway, so $18 or so isn't too bad.

    Kind Regards,

    ZRon

Yes, in absolute terms, it's cheap but GBP10 for a piece of paper??? I paid 0'98 euro for the tiny one Mercedes provides now.

Anyway, I'm happy for paying and having the sticker. It's the kind of things we do for our babies.

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

I was about to buy a couple myself, but I checked the seller's feedback. One person said the colors don't match quite right, and another left this negative feedback (could be a whiner, but anyway):

"Very bad quality. Low definition, wrong colors. Printed by Inkjet printer."

I don't mind reproductions, but (1) I'd like to know if it's original or repo before buying, (2) it should be close to OE quality, especially for something that has to deal with temps >200°F, and (3) the colors should be close enough that nobody can really tell the difference. Might be tough to determine the original color unless you have a NOS decal to use as a guideline. All the old ones will be faded by time & heat.

Anyway, Ron, let us know what you think of the decal when you get it!

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

I contacted the seller to ask if these were originals or repops, just to see what he'd say. Here is his reply:

The decals have not been available from Mercedes since the mid 90s. This is a copy. Whilst these are OK I am currently in the process of getting a decal made that is as good as and indistinguishable from the original- if you want the best sticker available I would hold on a couple of weeks for one of these- they are being printed on Thurs next week via screenprint to exact colours and correct artwork. If you want one of these email me in a couple of weeks when I have them or wait for the new listing. The listing will state how good they are and the best available etc. Thanks Matt.

Guess I'll wait until the new ones are out and order a couple of 'em...

I received the sticker yesterday. In my opinion it's not bad but I don't have an original and new one to compare. It actually looks better than in the pictures.

The Porsche one, discussed above my post sits at the bottom of that wooden battery-cover in the trunk. Never seen it in RL though on any German 500Es

Owners may very well find one affixed to the backside of the right inner trunk liner. It is a part number label for the liner.

GNM stands for Georg Näher of Markgröningen, a German automotive interior materials provider. GNM labels are affixed to the back of my W111's rear seat. GNM evidently also provides interior lining & insulation componentry for the W124.036.

The label displaying the PORSCHE AG name is on the back of the right side inner trunk lining (the battery box side). Interestingly, a similar label displaying the MERCEDES BENZ AG name is on the back of the left inner trunk lining (autotelephone transmitter/receiver side).

The label was never affixed to the battery box lid. Dean's label most likely detached from the liner & fell to the bottom of the battery box when its original adhesive finally failed.

    500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

Not a sticker, but a multilingual two-sided laminated info card regarding Wheel Mounting.

Specific to the E500E, this item is located within the spare tire well, wire-tied thru a metallic eyelet to the jack hold-down bracket.

Question Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

    Hi guys,

Thou slightly off-topic, I wanted to ask for help with regards to information (as to where to buy and prices, if still available) or if anyone here has excess stock and would be willing to sell the following stickers. I know that they are not the correct stickers for my R129, but then as Dave/gsxr wrote in a previous post "it's not identical but it's pretty close and better than nothing".

    Thank you in advance,

    Chicky

A comprehensive list of W124 stickers is to be found here.

probably many overlaps with all the earlier posts but you never know it might help somewhere along the way.

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

Is there anyone in the UK (or in Europe I guess, as these cars would display the same?) who has a European spec E500E still with all its stickers? If so, could they photograph them and post them here for the benefit of those of us whose cars have no, or very few, stickers remaining. (Mine only has the one inside the fuel filler cap, and one on the upper surround of the boot).

    Many thanks.

I think there was another thread with more detailed discussion on the windshield decals. Last I checked (a year or two ago) there was an eBay seller that offered reproductions of the original/correct M-B decal shown in post #6 above. I was somewhat annoyed that the seller did not state they were repops and also did not answer direct questions about their origin (original or repop?). The tipoff is the rounded corners on the repops and, IIRC, a 2-layer design (?). They were reasonably priced though, and looked fine for non-concours use.

Thanks, Greg! Yup, that's the one. Although the listing clearly says "Genuine", I do not believe these are original OE Mercedes decals... unless MBNA commissioned a fresh production run where the 'new' ones are not the same as the originals (as with the large yellow ignition warning decals for the valve covers).

I did also... but Tom did not (and AFAIK, still does not) have the period-correct decals available for the E500E, as noted in the Wiki link Greg posted above.

Part of the confusion is there are 2 very different decals with the identical part number (129-584-08-38). The early version is correct, the late version is not.

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

I know that the "A DAIMLER-BENZ PRODUCT" stickers were available from MBUSA as of a few years ago, but the "A MERCEDES-BENZ PRODUCT" stickers that came on the E500E windshields from the factory have NOT been available for a number of years now.

I do not know if the "DAIMLER-BENZ" stickers are currently available from MBUSA or not.

I have ordered a few of the "MERCEDES-BENZ PRODUCT" stickers from the eBay vendor a couple of years ago, and they are decent enough (but not quite exact) reproductions of the factory stickers. The main issues are a slight difference in the block letter font + spacing, and more obviously the rounded corners. I believe they are also physically slightly smaller than the factory stickers were, as well.

For 98% of people, these repro stickers are just fine, and would be a fine addition to a replacement windshield. I would not hesitate to use one on my own car. However, I do not own a concours car, so EXACTNESS is not paramount to me.

It would be good if someone could confirm whether the "DAIMLER-BENZ" stickers are still available or not.

The current replacement "MERCEDES-BENZ PRODUCT" stickers, which GSXR has illustrated above, are not correct, although since they share the same part number, an argument could be made in a concours situation that they are correct for the application.

Separately, I recently ordered a few stickers for my 560SEC. Many stickers are unavailable, but the one that I wanted most, which is the "PREMIUM UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY" sticker that goes inside the fuel flap on the car's inner fender just below the fuel neck, IS available. It's a black rectangular sticker, and is part number 124 584 00 46. I needed it for my restoration of my SEC's rear quarter-panel, per the repaint.

Re: 500E / E500 Factory Sticker Reference Guide

On a slight tangent...is there a demand for these stickers today, enough where it would justify running some (if not all ) of them, especially the rare or discontinued ones?
I supply most of the high-performance stickers that are found on Tesla vehicles, we're ramping up on the Model 3 and could possibly squeeze a run of 500e specific ones as there's usually a relatively long tail in the printing process.

The missing component would be a volunteer designer to provide the finished files...
