    Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

Today, I noticed some corrosion on my 93' battery tray, so I took the battery and tray out.
To my surprise, there was corrosion under the tray that was so extensive that it had rusted a hole in the shelf and I could see all the way through to the driveway. This, in turn, allowed water to enter when driving in rain causing even more rust.
Tomorrow, I plan to use a wire brush and rust inhibitor to stop the rust, then look for a way to seal the shelf area and stop the water intrusion. I may have to take it to a body shop for this.

Excellent point, this should be a yearly check in every 124.

Very good suggestion, Trae. The only rust on my high miler is the battery box as you describe. My guess is that a prior battery leaked acid and rusted the box from the inside out. I will be cutting out the rusted area and welding in new metal...at some point.

Found some surface rust in mine too. I took out the battery tray and spare too, wire brushed/vacuumed until I was satisfied and coated all lightly with a product called "Leak Seal". Before you fall off your chair......this is good stuff!
I learned about it from my son who used it on the custom tubular bumpers on his Land Cruiser rock crawler (fully exposed to the elements), he got the tip from a forum called IH8MUD, this stuff is DURABLE. It turned out very nice and now my entire trunk is "sanitary" (as in clean) to my VERY anal standards!

Personally, I see that as temporary repair. Of course, temporary could last many years but still temporary. I'd rather cut out the rusted area and replace it with good metal.

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

I don't see what it would hurt to try it, Trae, especially if it's under the battery. This reminds me of a premixed liquid version of PC-7. That stuff will be stronger than the metal you apply it to.

See, I knew that was true because a commenter with the handle "Gerry Van Zandt" had said that very thing right on one of that guy's YouTube videos, and it couldn't be on YouTube if wasn't absolutely true. They screen for that, you know!

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

This is what I found underneath my battery tray. The body shop at first thought they could fabricate something to weld into that location. But after getting in there and cutting out all of the corroded material they advised the best, long-term solution was to buy a new floor (part number: 124 630 04 60...cost $260 w/ freight shipping) piece and then cut and weld from it. Got it done and dusted.

ADMIN EDIT: The price on 124-630-04-60 has increased to $446 USD MSRP as of September 2015.

The 400e is slightly different too but may work. I bought a 400e battery box from Hendy but haven't tried fitting it yet...

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

I know I should put pictures up for this, but let me try to describe my day with the 93' rusted battery box..
    I used this kit:https://mercedessource.com/store/mir...air-kit-extras.
Knocked off most of the scaly rust and scraped back to good metal.
I then painted the inside and outside where the acid made a 3x5 hole.
Then, used the fiberglass patch included in the kit.
Overall, I am pleased except for my incompetence at bodywork. I made the fiberglass to thick, it hardened, and now I can get only three out of the four bolts through the holes in the battery tray.

You could probably save a little $$ by getting POR15 and a fiberglass muffler patch kit, but I did not know.

Can you drill and tap the hole?

You probably could have, but just think of how much fun we had harassing GSXR about his mentor. There was entertainment value there.

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

I just slightly enlarged/reamed the hole on the battery tray, and all bolts now fit nicely in their respective holes.

So far, this patch job (under the battery tray) has worked. I might invest in a new battery box in the future, but this is a very acceptable repair for the 93' since I use it as a daily driver.

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

You can have your battery tray sand-blasted and powder-coated. That's what I did for the battery tray on my (former) 1995 E320 wagon. See the Top-End Rebuild Thread (M104) for more information on this.

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

After two years of daily driving, I can now confirm the the fix worked on the 93'.

After attending to a small surface rust spot beneath the spare tire today on the 92' 500E, I pulled the battery tray out to have a look.

There was another VERY small spot of surface rust that had just started to take hold. The only way to spot it was to actually take the time to remove that battery tray and LOOK.

I sanded and painted it. Both jobs took about 20 minutes.

I tell you, this "out of sight, out of mind" thing really is true.

Do yourselves a favor and take the time to look.

Very common place on all W124s i know - but worse on the V8 models... as soon as there is battery acid just once on the metal mostly unnoticed, its to late.

Another good reason to switch to AGM sealed batteries, which should reduce or eliminate the acid issues.

Right, i mostly buy the Mercedes VRLA Batteries which are rebranded VARTA AGM with non-liquid acid embedded into glassfiber mats i believe. They can withstand more than 10 deep-discharge cycles. I had at least 4-5 on that used Batterie from 2008 and it still works flawlessly in my E430 (was former 500E Batterie)

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

I pulled the battery tray from my 560SEC a couple of years ago, and found it to have a fair bit of surface rust (but nowhere near rusted through). I did this when I replaced the battery on the car with a new AGM battery.

Not only did I clean out a lot of crap from underneath it, but I ordered a new tray from MB rather than hassling with getting the original one de-rusted and re-painted. Definitely something that should be checked every couple or few years on all of our cars.

I realize things are physically different on the C126 than on the .036....

I think you are referring to the rear trunk quarter panel. If so and this is NLA it may still be got by ordering the complete rear fender. (Since that lower panel comes attached to the new quarter panel) Albeit this is a very expensive work-around.

When I see a W124 / C124 with clean quarters in breaker’s yards I cut them out complete and stockpile I could compare ‘stock’ 124 rear trunk quarters with 036 upon request. BTW standard w/c124 rear trunk quarters are also NLA.... the NLA bug is hitting hard lately......

    .
IF the rear complete fender WAS even available..it would NOT be feasible..as that part would cost an arm and a leg like you said

    Jlaa,

Yikes!!! Are you talking $331.00 for a battery tray or a larger part. If so that's scary expensive.

I'm glad I bought one from Captruff last year for a spare.

i believe he is talking about the lower part of the quarter panel...aka the battery box...and NOT the battery tray. The battery tray is ALOT cheaper..and it is available still..most likely because it is a more common part...because it beeing an R129 part..and not a 036 e500e specific part

The battery tray i was quoted 150 dollars for one..and like i said..that part is available.

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

so...does anyone have one of these panels to sell me? seems like all you people just keep them as "spares" ...just in case"
i actually have ONE spot of rust on my car..and that is this dreaded battery box /rear end of the wheel well box..so i wanna do it proper..and weld in a complete new part..and not just repair the hole/rusted area.

Re: Check UNDERNEATH your Battery tray!

This is picture of my 124.036 rear trunk well when I first uncovered it to check for rust.
    Attachment 69584

And this is an example of a spare ‘stock’ c124 rear quarter on the same side.
    Attachment 69585

It appears at least one difference on the 036 quarter is the additional re-enforcement plate inside with bolts to take the battery tray. It may also be wider – I could measure that too. What I am thinking is if you can’t get a 036 specific repair panel maybe a new stock item could work if the plate is still good enough to swap over. (Again I could check the width of the fender wells is the same as the 036 item MAY also be wider) However I do know that the opposite (LH) side trunk well is NLA from MB. I have not checked new availability this RH side myself
