It's been incredibly mild, by Houston standards. We're just now starting to get into the "meat" of the year .... which separates the men from the boys. We're in a hard 95-degree daily slog from now through mid-October. We're seeing ~90F almost daily now, but the normal summer temps generally run 93-98F every day. With about 70-90% humidity. Not quite there yet, but soon....

    Guys,

Thanks on the temp & humidity update.

Just curious being from the state w/ the best weather on the planet, the "Global World Leader in Climate Change State" also known as the "Looney Tunes State".

The best weather is hardly worth it anymore. I gotta get out of this place.

All of the west coast states have turned into "Looney Tunes States." Check the recent demonstration problems over the weekend in Portland, Oregon as well as the recent stabbings there that made the national news. All of this from the "mecca" of liberalism and hipsterism and peace/love/harmony/food trailers in the USA. It's why after growing up and living in all 3 West Coast states pretty much my entire life, that I moved to Texas almost 9 years ago. I can never live in a West Coast state again. From Texas it's likely that I'll end up next in coastal Maryland, Virginia or North Carolina to live out my days.

Got sidetracked last few days doing collision work on the boy's Tacoma. New headlights, fender, bumper support and bumper cover. Lots of bending sheet metal, several zip ties since Toyota charged 3.50 per plastic grommet. C126 has been stripped down, nothing left of the dash. looking forward to removing the Intake section and refurbing the dusty flaps of 26 year old foam.

That is an evaporator core that died in the C126. (It's the black thing on the left)

For optimal cooling of course, air should easily pass thru the fins....that is not happening with this sample. The flash lessened the reality of the crud plugging and obstructing airflow.

Sure a lot of debris stuck to that condenser. That's under the dash? Older MBs A/Cs are not that great to begin with all of that crap sure can't help efficiency. MB A/Cs need to be in top order to get max cooling.

I can see a reason to retrofit the filters on my 93 500e but at this point in it's life it's probably to late unless your changing out the condenser under the dash.

Louis, Please give us more pics of the progress.

    Thanks

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

I agree. I am thinking about rigging at least a mesh over the fresh air plenum to keep large debris from getting in. I run a/c at least 10 months out of the year. Making the outer firewall opening slightly smaller with framed solar screen mesh may just do it. That will be last on the list but for sure, this garbage will not enter in the future. The leaking was near the clump, above the center of the mass between the fins. There was also several layers of disintegrated flap foam that all got replaced with better products. (contact cement on clean surface and tool box tray liner and 2mm thick closed cell foam sheet cut to fit flap surface area) The components are very brittle after 26 years of Texas heat and use. I have cleaned every nylon hinge, every vacuum connection is new and so are the pods. Gleitpaste on every pivot point on every moving part. and a drop of atf into the cables. If I had broken anything in the box controls I was prepared to set all flaps so that I had pure sealed box except for the center dash vents. Luckily, nothing broke during the tear down and cleaning/lubrication process. This will not be a honch style How-To, there are several available at other locations. But more pics to follow as a memory.

The stock R-12 system on my 560SEC blows as cold as, or colder than, the stock R-134a system in my E500. I think you just have to have them operating at peak efficiency is all. The A/C system in my W116 450SEL 6.9 worked quite well too.

Ok rebuilt all flaps, all new pods and I even placed some very heavy solar screen over the fresh air box. This way it is held tight betwixt the hvac box and the firewall. No pics of it, but no debris, nada is getting into my airbox. Also, putting the 3 pipes for the heater thru the firewall solo is a Herculean task, as it must have been over 100f easy in the garage.

All ready to send our wood for refinishing and will take car to Indy to evacuate system and recharge when they can get me in and out. Will put dash back on when it's done.

As for the E500, my star broke off so the stealer gave me $5 off list. Fodders day special

    Great Job Louis!!!

Just thinking about crawling around under the dash is making my old bones ache.

100f Yikes!! Forget about evacuating the A/C, you would have to be evacuate me to the ER.

Just kidding - I CAN TAKE IT

Man it's hot in the garage. Only lost 6 lbs sweating upside down in the footwell. Finally gave up, loosened the upper connections to the expansion valve and was able to get the bottom to bite. It really is simple to install the expansion valve by alternating upper and lower a few threads at a time alternating in an X fashion until tight. Then I torqued them down a skosh more with hardware. Getting closer......

Spent a few Minutes getting car connected with minimal dash/hvac controls. Started it up and ran all the controls electronically and the flaps all open and close correctly. Let the heat generate thru the new core with leak free success.

Here is a picture of the outside air inlet from the engine view. The point is to show what it looks like to cover the opening with mesh. This prevents debris from entering the hvac system.

Not much today. Rebuilt a few wires from a PO radio installed that got butchered. Finished floor ducts and installed a new dead foot pedal I had for years. Zip ties all the harnesses I re-taped to the crash bar.

.076kg of R134 entered after 30 mins of vacuum and pressure test of my work. No leaking and she blows nice and cold. Very odd to drive without a dash or gauges

Now we wait for wood to come back before dash install.

    and head for divorce court....

Swabbed all my firewall fire proof material with contact cement, and anything else that was factory glued is now tight as the assembly in September of 91. Finalized the expansion valve foam insulation, installed passenger crash bar and both sets of carpets for the floor and the tunnel. Replaced the steering shroud with a nice perfect example from parts stash. Removed cluster and painted the case SEM Landau Black.
