    OWNER - nocfn

So I have the 1994 E500 Spruce 249 with EVO II wheels and custom interior. I have been out of town and did some poking around and have some basic observations and remedies on order:

    APPEARANCE

    Exterior

Review of the paint job and have determined that it is a quality job. While it is not my particular choice, it will remain until the other issues are corrected. The roof, bumpers and cladding have been sprayed 040, and the front bumper cover is from a wagon.

Plans is to source bumper for the e500 and restore the fogs to stock. I have purchased the proper front and rear badges, and have not decided I will install a medalion or a gunsight on the hood. I will install the trunk star and orient the E500 per spec. I have purchased a new RS E500 headlamp assembly.

Windows are tinted, tires are relatively new, there are no records of accidents, and I cannot visually find any chassis issues to indicate an accident was part of its history. So things are straght and well cared for.

    Interior

The later facelift parchment has been modified to include black accents in the door cards, seat centers, head rests and steering wheel. The burl walnut has been refinished in piano black, and it is a quality job that would rival a popular California wood refinisher. I have removed several pieces and it is not wrapped. The leather work is quite good, soft and supple like the GAHH covers I purchased for my C126. I spent about 3 hours and almost a bottle of aerospace 303 nourishing the leather and vinyl dash, all plastic bits. I had to reorient some switches since they were not installed porperly. The sunshade was removed sadly, and the rear deck was recovered. It was flawlessly executed and if it wasnt for the missing switch you would not know it existed.

All light bulbs have been cleaned and swabbed in dielectric grease, as with the door switches and all light lenses. Sunroof is fully operational, and drains are clear. I cleaned the tracks and applied a smattering of Gleitpaste where required. Gasket is supple and received a good cleaning and Aerospace 303 treatment. Cocoa matts have been ordered, along with a 2phast mirror. Grey lockout door switches have also been ordered. Door check straps are as advertised, doors close like a vault effortlessly and the windows are smoothe and quick. I will be placing the new strut and straps in the armrest. Seats work as expected. Keyless entry ordered and will be installed when received.

    MECHANICALS

A heavy service was done including tranny and oil filter services, both harnesses, cabin filters, a/c etc. Tranny shifts nicely and has come alive with a bit of driving. The car did sit for many months over the past year. I also replaced all alloy fuses with brass/copper into a cleaned contact fuse box. Engine bay is generally spotless and I intend to keep it that way. Brakes are new and solid, no codes or idiot lights but all the bulbs work at start up.

I have purchased new spheres and bushings for the rear struts, they do not leak and the boots are in great shape. SLS does not leak, but I bounce like I am on springs alone back there so that indicates accumulator spheres. Front side need new Bump stops but the shocks themselves appear to be working well. While the mount rubber looks to be supple, it is original so I may just change those out when I replace the bump stops.

I did find that the DS drain from the cowl was not draining. Removing the fender liner rendered the poor install of the drain. It was folded under and out of the way so it did not drain. Corrected that, and noticed that the frame drain was also covered with spray undercoating. Once I prise the vulcanized rubber from the exit on the frame, I got a steady stream of water from the plugged drain. All in all about a quart of clear water was in that plugged chassis drain. It did rain here for about 6 days straight so I am not surprised. I did some poking about and found no evidence of rust anywhere under the various undercoatings. Glad I caught it.

So that is all for now. I bought about a grand worth of stuff initially, and look forward to getting all installed once I get it. Car is garaged and will not be driven until the rear suspension is repaired. It is drivable in town, but not wise with the shot accumulators BOING BOING BOING.

Congrats on the purchase, it's definitely a unique car. In addition to what you posted above, I think there is an issue with the front fenders. I could be wrong, but to my eye the driver side flare doesn't look quite right, especially towards the front of the flare where it meets the bumper up to about 11:00 o'clock or so. It could just be me (hoping) but you will know for sure when you fit a stock bumper.

I too like the interior and probably wouldn't change it. Anyway, like I said, it's unique and with a bit of TLC, looks to be a very cool car.

Thank you! Well when I get it side by side with the Honch-mobile, I will be better able to tell on the flares. Speculation is the PO liked his "sportline" look. He wanted to cut the wagon and the E500 in half and weld them together, legend has it. When a purist said no, we think he swapped fenders and the bumper from the wagon. Cannot attest to it but eccentricity was present. So I will say that the reinstall of the fenders have left a larger than needed hood-gap on the p/s side of things. All in due time...

I like the interior as a 5/94 born date, (a different shade of mushroom LOL) the usual bolster shows no sign of wear, so the leather work was purely PO's tasteful and visual desire but not purist in scope. I prefer the change of color palette, but I also have a C126 that I have a break in the 268 grey interior with black coco Matts, French stitching on the console in black and the storage box. It appears nicely to my eye and really gives a nice effect of a waterfall off the dash, so-to-speak. I think the black coco brand matts will complete the look. It's Not for everyone's tastes, but not everyone paid for the car either ha ha ha. No plans to change interior as it is new.

    Re: OWNER - Nocfn

as an aside, If I have any trouble with fenders, I will just get new ones or harvested ones for the E500E depending on source/price. During the paint process, the inside of the fenders were painted 040 black so without further investigation, the vin sticker is either painted over or was removed, I have not investigated that part of it. No rubbing of the 245/45/17 on EVO II so not sure about the flares. I did remove the interior lining from the fender well to correct the orientation of the tubular drain and specifically looked for welds or evidence of bends with nothing obvious by sight or feel. But it is hard for me to say since it is my first 036. GVZ will be by this week or next for some parts picking so perhaps he will square me away a bit.

I don't think the fenders were swapped with the wagon. I think it's just the way the wagon bumper meeting the E500E fenders is off because it doesn't flare out the way the E500E bumper cover does. When we looked at the fenders with the hood up, I don't remember seeing any evidence of paintwork on them and the wagon was a different shade of green when they were next to each other so they would have had to be painted Spruce if swapped.

There was some paint work on fenders, but they appear to be original or at worst, E500E metal.

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

Got switches installed and spheres, kind of. While it takes longer to jack up the side of the car than to swap out the spheres, one was not up to snuff as the pressure line from either side would not screw in. Upon investigating box/ looks like it was a returned to the shelf as it had cellophane tape on it and its labeling appeared to be "restocked" and the other box had my name on it as did the other stuff. Anyway Lionel sending out another one - stand up guy! Both spheres are original and shot. My straw from the chlorinated CRC went all the way in with no resistance. Too bad, wanted to drive this weekend.

Forgot to mention I changed out the rear top strut bushings as well, and compressed the grunge out of the struts when doing so.

Pulled cluster, cleaned unit, bulbs and applied dielectric grease where needed. Cleaned the potentiometer spring and contact points. Swapped out ODO gears, Gleitpaste applied to them and the clock gears.

Got my 2phast mirror today but install that when I get the replacement air cell from Lionel Wednesday.

Installed the replacement air cell for the defective one I received. No leaks, system rises as advertised and the ride is very smooth. Changing out upper strut bushings was a good move, the originals were about 40% of the thickness of the new ones. Removed the "Sportline" badges from both sides of the car. Gave her a good bath to remove the thick yellow Texas tree pollen so present at spring time. It is yellow, and you can literally see it floating in the air. As fate would have it, its raining today!

Swapped out my lower cladding door edge connectors, and my trunk bumper stops. Got a new Fuel Pressure Regulator and will swap that in this week. No issues with that which exists, just a PM item to check off the list! Also ordered a new "plate" for the inside mirror and got a brand of mushroom coded 8320 and my 94 needed 8F19. so many mushrooms...

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1428433462.213855.jpg. Not sure you can tell by the pic, but this was the replacement upgrade whenever that was and I am glad I changed it out. Pic may not show it but O rings and other bits were cracked or torn - ready for failure.

Added the Lamin-X to the new Headlight assembly, and scraped off the old application on the existing lamp and replaced with new. Sourced a set of oem corners, so I swapped out the older Taiwan knock off with proper. Fit is much better, funny how that works.....

Drained and refilled crankcase with Redline 15w50 synthetic with a Hengst filter. For you detail guys this was my first change since ownership and the filter was pretty dirty, but the oil was clean - things worked as expected. Replaced O rings and copper crush washer with filter change. I used a topsider device which makes my life easier. I do wonder if it is best practice to do a pan drain at least once per year.

I've been using Topsider type extractor (from Griot's) for the past 10+ years now, with never a single issue. Remember that MB dealers use the vacuum extraction method, as well. They don't drain from the pan.

I've also started doing oil analyses on my cars at every oil change, via Blackstone Labs. I will be changing my SEC's oil (Brad Penn 20W-50) tonight and also possibly the G-wagen (Chevron DELO 400 15W-40) tonight, or one evening this week.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Purchased a new tumbler and key from Tom Hanson. Takes 3 minutes and less than a C-note to ensure worry free driving. Tumbler removed was 02-94 dated, and a little clickish. When I did my C126, the tumbler fell to pieces in my hand. I just want to remind all of you that have no records and a 23 year old car or older, pay the man and save yourself from certain trouble. The tumbler may not give you a warning and you can be hosed. Who doesn't like an extra key?

Bumper and fogs arrived 2nd day via greyhound from Lionel. Have decided to paint them spruce to match the car, rather than 040 like the customization that was done. Pics when completed in about 8-10 days weather permitting.

I did drive the C126 around town and made some torque adjustments to the valve covers since I recently changed the Oilers and tubes. No leaks, but did have to replace the upper engine breather hoses for the injectors. They were hard and cracked after 3 years. No leaking valve covers, I did it right

Is it just me or it has regular W124 rocker panels ? just curious

How are you going to put a hood star back (there is no hole for it anymore) ?

Nice and well taken care of car . Looks shinny especially evo 2 rims

I believe the panels to be correct to the car, wich one(s) are you referring to, I have had to cinch a few down with new clips. As for the hood and trunk, the holes for the badges have been filled with traditional body filler. I was going to put them in by small drilling in the puddy. That ended when the discovery of the rear decal on the trunk lid was covered in a layer of clear. So, I do not want to ghetto it anymore than it is. I will have the body shop take care of both nose and tail marques at some point very soon in the future.

I was talking about these guys .

Also jack caps appeared to be a regular w124 and the shape of the rocker panel is more sort of rounded compare to 036 which has sharper lines/look.

I ve attached my 036 to see the difference

ok I see what you mean. Legend has it that the PO had multiples and made all of them in the image he preferred, including making the E500 "sportline" which we know was never the case. So at the time I purchased the car, I think the wagon contained many of the e500 body parts that he envisioned. So it is the lower piece I need to source, not the cladding? The bumper is a E420 or E320 front bumper and that will be for sale very soon, it is in perfect shape. I was also told that he wanted the entire car cut in half and blended int a wagon or something like that.

So for now she drives well, it had very few needs mechanically and I shall endeavor to get that lower skirt replaced. Anyone stateside have a line on the lowers for the E500E?

Wow, good eye, Roma! I hadn't noticed that. It's worth further investigation, but I suspect they may have used standard rockers and stretched them to fit better (if not stretched, they look totally wrong, as seen on the white 400E conversion a few years ago).

That said, you're in luck, someone just posted a set of 500E rockers for sale at $300/pair in the classifieds... new ones will cost you around $1200/pair delivered. This is a great deal, IMO...
    https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7968

BTW - do you plan to paint the lowers Spruce Green so the entire car is monochrome, or the factory color for lowers which would be Tropical Green...?

think they were/are sold. I saw those minutes after they were posted but it didn't click in. Definitely from an E420, not E500. I will send a pm to the seller and to Jeff the resident dismantler.....

The plan is all spruce, and factory badges

    Not really ..

Moreover I can tell you you need a e500e fender cladding as well. Check pics my 500e vs yours cladding, I pointed "the line that goes from rocker panel to the cladding" , e500e does not have this line.

Not sure about the rear ones, you can take them off and check PN

Roma is indeed detrimental to your bank account! Pretty sure he's right (again)... need front fender mouldings too, along with the rockers. There's another ~$400 from Lionel... should come with the stainless trims though (which are also different).

The previous set of pics is the best example so far. You can clearly see different shape.

Here is your another pic that has multiple evidience of wrong part. Misalighned moulding and chrome piece is not happy.

OK received my 036 Rockers and wiped down the areas needing attention with isopropyl, gave it a great fiberglass repair where it was required and will let them cure. SHOUT to JEFF "Captruff" for getting these 199 painted NLA items to me asap!

Now, on to my 036 specific fender cladding

gonna be pricey I am sure...

Found out the hard way of not having a 30 amp spare strip fuse in the fuse box taped to the lid on the C126. Happened to lose my fan on the E500 and pulled right over, got out my on board stubby and the spare fuse from the fuse box lid and I had AC again, and good too as we hit close to 90 for the first dry afternoon in Houston in almost 3 weeks! Consider this a summer PSA, get a spare 30amp fuse and keep one in the lid of the fuse box.

It's a good idea to just purchase 5 or 6 of them from AHAZ, and have them on hand for your 124 and 126 cars. They tend to go out at very inopportune times.

Installed new brake booster vacuum line in the C126, the other was like a pretzel stick. Check valve didn't hold longer than 5 seconds, upon inspection after removal, it snapped in half and the check valve crushed in my fingers. Funny how high and tight my brake pedal is now!! 167,880 date code was 12/90

Turned out the front fenders were standard 124 with lots of bondo added to create faux-036 fender flares. Pretty good job actually, but doesn't play nice with the correct fender mouldings and lower rocker covers...

I placed the order for the new fenders and some assorted cladding clips. One is local and the other is at NJ distribution. They will get here next week most likely, or a week from Monday. I will be away when they will be delivered so my source will sit on the boxes so my wife won't have to get them at the bus station(nice part of town). So I will need to get them and paint them and install with bumper and fogs etc. I will target completion for the 4th of July.inside the blue tape is bondo, nothing magnetic.

One more thing to check... see if the fender liners are correct. They should extend forward to the E500 bumper, under the fog lights, as seen below. If you need the 036 liners, the trick will be getting the correct metal clips/screws that fasten the liner to the lower bumper edge, and both the vertical engine partition panels, as well as the lower horizontal splash shield... which is another 036-specific item that may be missing, as it wouldn't have worked with the non-036 bumper...

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

Correct 036 front fender liners are A1248841535 and A1248841635. If you ordered those, you're all set. If not... d'oh...

    For callout 65, I think you need 4 of A0029943945 plus 2 of A0029948045... and six of callout 62, screw # A1239900136.

    For callout 68, looks like 2 of A2019900536 and 6 of A0019901236.

HOWEVER... the EPC quantities are not always 100% accurate. And, I don't have photos of what those clips/screws look like, but there are different ones used in different locations. Anyone own an E500E that lives nearby where you can take a peek at which screws/clips go where? You definitely wants all the proper screws/clips in place, I've heard of reports from multiple people where the liners pop down into the airstream at freeway speeds and burn up against the tire, ruining them. With the correct clips, they should remain in place even at Warp Nine.

BTW - the engine splash shield is A1245242730, see what you have on there now.

I have a ton of attachment screws, nuts etc from parts cars, junk yard cars etc. I promise it wont be ratchet when its done. There is a shield underneath, I saw it when I got the car and thought UGH because I just repaired the one my daughter ripped out of her car on a parking barrier. I thought what a pita, so I know I have one. all the greyed out stuff is what isn't on my car per epc. I will check it all out after my order and go from there to see what I still need. I appreciate the help.

Unbelievable how deep anti-036 job was done.

Well, the good thing is that the whole front end and rocker panels will be brand new and freshly painted

036 bondo fenders are total waste of time and money. Still do not understand why the previous owner did not buy new parts

There may be *A* shield underneath, but is it the correct shield...? That is the question. The 036 shield is longer and extends forward to the 500E bumper. And, the forward mounting holes are in different positions, IIRC... 036 front holes are ~1 inch closer to the middle holes compared to the 034 shield. New, correct shield should be around $125 from the discounters. If the original 036 shield is still on the car, I'd expect the front has been cut off to fit the non-036 bumper.

Crap. I just thought of something else... the cooling ducts from the bumper to the engine mounts are 036-specific items too, and they're kinda expensive for plastic tubes. Only the front "scoop" portion up against the bumper is 036-specific, the tubes along the frame rails are the same as the 034. See the black plastic rectangular thingys dangling in the breeze in the photos below.

Honestly I am on I-10 on my way to Pensacola so I will check bumper stuff in progress up after fenders. I still need boomerangs and bumper strip (willing to go used) sooooo check personal inventory.
