Can't you get those SLS tanks cleaned?

SLS tanks are cheap enough that it's easier to replace them than to try and clean an old one. The new ones come with the lid, filter, dipstick, etc. Under $50 USD last time I checked? Make sure you get new hose too, the old stuff generally gets ruined during removal.

    Re: PWNER - gerryvz

Maybe split this stuff off of this thread into a new thread called something like "Little replacements for under the hood" and make it a general topic? If the SLS reservoir is cheap and easy to replace, I want to do that as well.

And it wasn't leaking, it just didn't get warm anymore inside the wiper reservoir. Had something todo with the duovalve, we learned afterwards. Oh well.

    Gerry,
We operate much the same way here in NC. I drive the stock 93' 500E as a daily driver and the 92' Renntech 500E at least once every two weeks.
I bought a 2001 SL500 for my wife's 45th birthday that is a garage queen with 54k on the odometer.
For the family, the 2000 Chevy 3500 van is the people hauler with 15 seats. (We have six kids.)
I am so thankful that this site is here! I am learning soooo much.

    Thanks !

I have a set of proper Euro lights waiting for me already in Germany, and the chromed wheels will come off in favor or a set of "regular" wheels or something else that is tasteful and proper for the car. Otherwise, not much to do on it....

Nice car! You have a very nice collection Where do you store all these? Do you have such a big garage at home?

Also: this car demands you hire a driver, and you don a hat, a cigar and sit in the rear, reading your paper )

Doesn't look too bad on a 126, and I don't come across SELs this nice every day...there is another one locally for sale here in Houston that's sort of a dark blood red (not pajettrot/cabarnet red) with palomino interior. I prefer dark exterior colors though. And this one has tinted windows to preserve the interior.

Well, one can only drive one car at a time, so fuel costs shouldn't be any more than they already are. The SEC will probably continue to be my daily driver, because it has more than 200K miles on it and I want to get it up above 300K !

Not all, I just thought since you already have a pearl black car in your stable, another color was going to be selected. Either way, the new ride is killer!

    Re: PWNER - gerryvz

I feel the same way about the 1993 500E. It already has 185k on the odometer and has become the daily driver (20.3mpg) highway; thus keeping the miles off the 92' Renntech.
Your new car is gorgeous. I just don't know anything about the 126. How does it ride/handle compared to the 500E on I-45? Would you rather take the 560 or the 500E on a long trip?
We have taken the 500E into the mountains and it is a pleasure to drive up and down the inclines. You can set the cruise control and it never misses a beat.
My in-laws have a NEW E350 (2011) and there are so many gears that it seems to "search" for the most economical setting on any kind of incline.

Just came across this photo, of me with my 1984 VW Rabbit (Golf I) GTI. This car was fully Neuspeed and Techtonics-enabled, bored to 2.1 liters from the stock 1.8.

This was a self-portrait that I did for a summer photography class at University. It would have been taken outside of my apartment in Corvallis, Oregon in July of 1989, so I was 21 years old there. Sorry for the crappy scan; the photo is also underexposed.

The car had fully tinted windows and you can see the wide rear-view mirror (quite fashionable at the time)....

Re-adding some photos of my E500, since the original links from my initial "PWNER" post are now off-line. These photos were taken circa 2005, so quite some time ago....

The iPod installation is old; that was a first-gen iPod with a cassette adapter. Not long after these photos were taken, I installed a cable that plugs into the back of the head-unit where the CD changer goes. I am using a 5th-Generation 160GB iPod for the past 6-7 years now...

    Re: PWNER - gerryvz

I took my 560SEC in to get emissions & safety inspected -- an annual necessity in the Republic of Texas.

The inspector told me when he saw the car's insurance certificate that it would be the last emissions inspection ($40) that the car would need. "From here on out, it's safety inspections only!" ($13 annually).

He also said, when the tests were over, "Man, that's one heck of a clean-burning car! Those numbers are really quite good!" When I told him that the cats were original (206,000 miles) he was impressed. He then told me "You ought to take those cats off now and run straight pipes, and recycle them old-school cats at a metal recycler! The platinum in those things is worth some big bucks!"

Lastly he complimented me on the condition of the SEC. "Really a beautiful car! You just ever see them like that anymore."

I updated my emissions results table earlier in this thread, posted here.

As you can see, a couple of measurements were slightly ahead of recent years, but certainly still in overall excellent condition.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

    Pretty!

That grille looks very nice, but sometimes at a quick glance it looks like a W140

I love the S600 style grille. I have them on both my 500's and my 300D, although the 300D grille is a cheap aftermarket one and the vinyl (!) is peeling. Gotta look for a nicer replacement.

As do I. If my car would've been any other color, I would also prefer the S600 grille. With this car though, it's simply not the look I'm looking for.

IIRC (we're going back like 9+ years) I got mine at Eriscar.de. I was happy with the quality of it and it has held up just fine over the years, including a number of years of daily-driving the E500 in the Pacific Northwest climate.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

The "proper" way to do this is to buy the genuine MB S600 grille insert, and modify it to fit in the W124 facelift grille shell. The problem is, the OE insert & stainless trims are obscenely expensive. Which is why pretty much everyone buys the cheap aftermarket item instead. I might try Derf's vendor referenced on the other thread. I haven't bought one of these in a very long time.

Updated my latest E500 2013 emissions results here.

I took the car in to the inspection station to be tested. Before he even got started, the inspector walked around the car and came over and said, "Bowa, them there rear tires are BALD as a skinned coon's ass. I can tell you right now you're NOT gonna pass inspection with them bein' like that."

I replied and said, "Well, I've got a brand new set of tires and wheels sitting in my garage. I'll be back in 30 minutes and that won't be a problem any longer." And 30 minutes later, I was back

True, Plus its nice to have MB part number and made in Germany... but they tend to have a weak spots near the ends after resizing.

I was gonna say... there's plenty of tread there! You can still see grooves! But I didn't realize the "bad" one was not visible in the photo.

    Re: PWNER - gerryvz

The two on top were mainly the fronts. These were the original set of 'Kook Ventus K104 Sports I got back in 2004 or so. I ran these wheels for a couple of years, then ran the Aero IIs from probably late 2005 through about 20 months ago, when I had them refinished and put the Rials back on. So the 'Kooks were way overdue to get changed out anyway, just due to age. I'd say I got around 25+K out of them. Inner corners of the rears worn, even with the Rials. I won't drive these new tires until I get the RDMTek LCAs installed, which is one of my very next projects.....

    Cheers,
    Gerry

I would say that's good going! I've noticed in the US (Well, from friends and relatives there anyway) people run their tires real low, most beyond the limit! Do that in the UK you get fine heavily , 3 points per tire goes on your license (and you're only allowed 12, then you lose it!) if pulled by cops, which usually the first thing they look at. Aren't US cops strict on this ?

By the way, Gerry, seeing the reflection from your shiny 036, seems like Mrs Honcho's rims on her wagon are neglected from cleaning ? I can barely see the silver finish or have they been refinished in black?

Otherwise, you might wanna try this product as endorsed by the right Honorable GVZ :

P.S I'm rooting for second place in the "Chain-Yank" awards !

No, generally cops don't give a shit, as long as your car rolls straight down the street, isn't belching huge clouds of blue smoke out the tailpipe, and has a sober driver behind the wheel. No points on any license for bald tires and such.

In Texas they would catch said tires (like they did with me) in the annual inspection. In Oregon, there was no vehicular inspection, except emissions every two years. In Texas, safety + emissions is a $40 annual ordeal.

Don't you think its time to rip out the concrete slabs and create a proper driveway with smaller stone blocks? Gives you an opportunity to add in a HUGE Mercedes logo similar to the thread I posted a while back. A 3 meter wide Mercedes star on your driveway!

Perhaps when we build our new home up in the central Oregon mountains in the next couple of years, I'll consider that !
