    Re: OWNER - lowman (Norge)

So....i guess i put up some pics of the latest doing on the car..
I took down the rear differential to replace the output drive sealing rings.and to give it a proper refresh..as the rear end of the car has NOT been taken care of yet.
Also did replace the old driveshafts with some almost brand new ones that i came across from the States..and I gave the "new" shafts a coat of paint and two...to match up the look that i was going for

First off...had a HARD time getting off that outer collar nut on one of the driveshafts.Had to grind off halv the nut..and knock it off with a chissel

difference between old and new shafts

    Dirty ol "git"

Dirty inside of the diff..soon to be cleaned off as best as i could

SO unlucky...was planning this job to be done in the easter holiday..and when i got my already ordered and received sealing rings out of my "parts box"..i discovered that i got the wrong part.So the job was delayed..and i had to wait a week(because of the holiday) to order new rings..and the car had to hang in the workshop where i work..ALL week

Cleaned the outerside of the diff...down to a point where i found it ok to put on new paint.Used Hammerite "Tough" paint...and looked really good in the end.Just did one coat...as i did not want to overdo it,when it comes to the thickness of the paint..did not want to have a paint that could "crack" easily.

Another part of the car that i was happy to get done...was the brake lining wear indicator harness bracket...
It is not longer available..so i just jumped right at it ..and made myself a new one.Did not get to make the holes for the plastic clips..the same as on the original..so i used some 3M stick on clips,,and just zip ties to fasten the wiring.Looks pretty nice i have to say

Also did the SLS Valve bracket.Had to sandblast it..and etch primer and paint...did not remember to shot some pics of the finished part..and did not even get to get some pics of the underside of the floor above the subframe..as i did touch up the whole thing..grinded down all the surface rust on the subframe ,,which was not alot of rust luckily..and painted it up also

    Diff cover "dry" mounted

Mounting the new sealing rings.Did not have the special tool to install them..so i had to measure the depth on each side of the sealing ring so i made shure it was 100% even on ALL sides. Also did put it a TINY notch further into the housing..to prevent the ring sealing on the same surface on the output drive..as it did before. There was basically NO wear grooves on the outputdrives anyways..but did it for safety measures.

Output drives before and after.Remeber NOT to loose the spacer ring that is mounted on the output drive..it is a spacer to go towards the output drive bearing (between the output drive and outputdrive bearing in the diff

I also had to replace the multi connector housing on the underside of the floor.....for the ABS and Brake lining wear indicator harness. The tabs holding the wiring connectors IN the main connector...broke when pushing out the wiring connectors. You are supposed to insert a tool to release the hooks..but i didnt get to do this the proper way..so i pushed out the connectors without releasing the hooks..and just got myself a new main connector housing...luckily it was still available

    Hylomar

and finally...some combined Before/After shots that i edited together.I hope you like...i did

    Thanx

    Stephan,

I wish your car a Happy Birthday. I guess all of us 93 Owners should do the same.

Anyway, I for one am glad you restored your 'OWNERS THREAD'. You have documented a lot of interesting restoration and work projects and you have a great looking car. It would have been a pity to loose it all.

    Welcome Back!!!
    Terry

    Stephan,

Thanks for the nice pics. It looks like a pretty good turnout. Your car looks great. You've spent to many hours under it with it's restoration. Now it time to kick-back and enjoy it for a while.

I like the Pagoda 280SL? I had one for a short time but due to circumstances beyond my control I had to sell it.

I see your now a "Foodie" to. That looks pretty much like an "English Breakfast" to me. Now I'm hungry gotta go eat.

    hey people
Was inspired to do the center console wood trim ,,and give it a polish.
Im lucky to have no cracks in mine.....or..just a 5mm crack ,which is not really visible.
But anyways...got to wet sand it down with 2000grit paper....
then polished it back to gloss finish with my polishing machine,,,using some cutting compound
Finished it off with some regular wax
And voila...looks tons better...even though i will take it off once more and do another round..as there are still some tiny scratches in the paint,,,but definetly happy with the way it turned out for now.
I hope you like it.Thanx jc222 for some inspiration and kick in the butt

    Before

    Before

Gentle sanding...trying to sand it directionally ...to prevent the cut lines getting rounder....just a rule of thumb basically

    Wax on

Collage pic before and after...some difference indeed

The problem now..is that...the centerconsole can NOT be used to leave anything but a feather ,,as i dont want to scratch it up."laughs"

The paint is quite thick on these wood trims (approx 7-10times as thick as car clear coat) , so you could easily start with 1000grit paper and continue with 2000grit. However you have to sand equally to avoid stains, as the clearcoat is tinted with a brownish color factory.

Attention: NON 500e Stuff ,,but i WON EDIT: 191 cars participated at the car show

I Attended the anual Wings N Wheels car show where i live. This is a car show arranged by the Norwegian Sportscar Association. There was 5 categories to "compete" in.One of them was "The peoples Choice"Which were won by a McLaren p670s...and the other 4 categories,, were decided by a jury.
These categories were "Sports car of the year, Modified Car of the year,Unmodified car of the year, and the "Enthusiast Car of the year,

To my far beyond biggest surprise...i WON the "Enthusiast Car of the year"!!!!!
About 100 cars attended,,and for me to win this price..is just mindblowing actually. So my restoration of the car "paid off"
So i hope you dont mind havin a look at some "happy winner" pics
    Greetings from Norway
A little fun Fact...the original Ford Mustang Fastback from the Fast and "Ridicilous" Tokyo Drift, was at the show,as it now does have a Norwegian owner.

The 5 winners of todays trophies,From left to right:Peoples choice, Sportscar of the year, unmodified car of the year, modified car of the year, and my car,,enthusiast car of the year

yeah its been quite many hours put into the car at this point...and more to come "unfortunatly"..or not ...so im really happy going out and drive the cars these days..and enjoy them...,and hopefully my cars can inspire other enthusiasts to do the same to their cars.it does seem that they do ..after getting alot of feedback ...both on forums,,and at car shows..and on my youtube channel..im pretty humbled by all the positive comments ,and stories from people getting inspired.thats just lovely i think.

    Re: OWNER - lowman (Norge)

    hey people
Finally i got to do the check on my 500e ,that i wanted to do for a long time.
I wanted to check the bottom oil pan to see if there were any broken guiding rails for the timing chain.I also combined this job with sorting out an oil seap from the oil level sender plug going through the engine block..AND earlier i also got hold of a Oil filter housing return valve kit. This is an uprated return valve.
So..here is some pictures, and hopefully the pictures will do most of the talking

First look, bottom oil pan taken down. And i was happy to see my engine SOOOOOOO clean inside

NO plastic parts from the guiding rails.HAAAPPYYYY

Oil filter return valve taken out of the filter housing. Also took out the whole valve assembly, including the oil temp thermostat for the oil cooler.Pretty cool stuff. The worst part is actually to take out the locking spring. There is a groove in the seating area of the locking ring..and you will need a small flat head screwdriver, and stick it in there..and wiggle it out.

    Oil cooler thermostat,Made by Wahler

    Old dried out gasket.

Here you can see the difference in the return valve body.New valve to the right. Also notice the flat worn out o ring on the old one to the left. This is what mainly causes the oil to run back into the oilpan when its not supposed to do so.Raised neck providing a more accurate valve location

New valve assembly put into the housing.

A little peak through the bottom oilcooler hole..and you can see the thermostat

Oil Level Sender unit plug...old o ring about to be replace with a new one

Also got a new clip for the plug.

cleaned and mounted back into the engine block wall

New original mercedes gasket for the oil filter housing.Fun Fact:Original gasket made by Reinz

Mounted oil filter housing.Tightening torque on the 3 bolts fastening the housing to the engine block...25 nm

Cleaned the oil pan.only use lint free towels

New oil pick up rubber, and screen

all mounted back together. Also got to freshen up the bolts and the oil cooler pipe..and gave it a super clean, primed the parts and a fine layer of paint.
Bottom oil pan tightening torque 9/10 nm

thanx for looking a video is also out at this point

ALSO another little fun fact.Though i have checked my lower engine wiring harness earlier..and found it to be crack free...i did a discovery on the harness now..and it IS indeed deterioated.Just where the harness runs above the right hand side engine mount..the insulation on the wires are bad..so i will have to replace it.I just hope its not to expensive at the dealership...as i would like to replace it ASAP....Another option is to repair it...but in "some way" i do not have the time to do it...But ill see what it costs at the dealership first.

...as for the harness, it isn't too bad and I believe the HOW TO on it got updated with the simple task of removing the engine bay bracket from the old and new. Tape a rope to the old in the bay and pull harness out and down. Tie rope (tape the ends) to the new and pull back up to engine bay. Remove tape and rope, install bracket bay side and be done with it.

UGH that does suck. It doesn't take much to rebuild it, especially since it is just a few wires. You might even come up with a better connection to the starter this way.

Assuming he's referring to the 500E... the harness is not NLA, but there are probably none sitting on the warehouse shelf. I think they are built on demand, and therefore might take an extra week before shipping out of Germany. Not worth rebuilding when it's still available new at a tolerable price.

yeah i guess they do make it on demand...as they could not say delivery date..until i actually ordered one.

But its NOT reasonable price either...retail was approx 700 dollars...and my price was around 450/500 dollars..

well..ill see what i do...it would just be nice to fit a brand new original one..and not having to take it appart..spending many late hours ,,and putting it back together..as i need to have the car rolling..and i need to do it in one evening..But it seems that is gonna be what im actually going to do. Re: OWNER - lowman (Norge)

well...here is my toasted lower engine harness.
I did some multitasking today...so abit confused of what to go ahead doing.
I started to repair the harness..but at the same time..my parts guy came to visit me in the garage..and i came to the conclusion that i just wanted to place an order on a new wiring harness..even though i AM repairing ..or HAVE repaired the harness that i have. But i think ill stick to my plan..and just go ahead and let my order go through..and get a new original one.

Anyways..here are some pictures. The harness is dated back to 91.so..oldie but not so goldie
It was pretty bad when i took it apart..so i kinda was super lucky dodging a bullet this time

The final repair.Pretty happy with the outcome...even though i wish i had some more proper "heat shielding " material...but it works fine as it is.I got to keep all of the heat shielding..but i had to use standard electrical tape to surround the old shielding i had to slice in two to separate the harness. But 90percent of the harness is AS it should be.

Here is some pictures of the finished repair. ALL 4 "smaller" wires replaced...used proper heatshrink, and soldered on the old pins to the new wires.

    Thanx for looooking...NOW...lets eat waffles

What that tells me is that the harness is now being custom-made per order, and is not something that MB is stocking in their warehouse as they have done in the past.

Folks -- we are probably getting fairly close to a situation like they have with the 400E420s, where the lower harness will become "no longer available."

If you have not replaced both your UPPER and LOWER harnesses, you should do so now, while they are still available from the factory, and at decent prices. Seriously, this is a critical part and not one that you want to go without. Get these harnesses NOW !!

    Re: OWNER - lowman (Norge)

You and Jono are doing the harness rebuilding ... cool !!

The lower harness is considerably less complicated & time-consuming to rebuild.

At least MB still has them available ... for now. Which is why I admonish everyone to get them while they can. It's a once-in-an-ownership replacement.

    LOWMANIA FOREVER !!!
