    Re: OWNER - lowman (Norge)

    So...people
Here is a little Blackbeauty update
With the event of shutting down the FM radio frequency network in Norway..and THE ONLY country in the world to do so...EVERY car or home"radio"..has to be upgraded or "Downgraded" to DAB+,,,to be able to listen to radio (if that is your thing though),,,i have finally mounted the DAB antenna on my car.As you might know...i bought myself this Continental "Retro" ...headunit for my car earlier..but i havent bothered mounting the antenna ,because i never listen to radio really...but i thought it was about time just getting it mounted
So here is a little step by step "guide",on how i mounted it on my car
I also got to replace the heater control panel,as the adjusting wheel on the driver side had an internal fault ,which made it NOT "Click" proper when turning it all the way to either hot or cold. Also replaced all bulbs in there at the same time
I hope you like the pics
Take off A pillar panel, you need to be carefull not breaking it..and you will have to kinda drag it towards you when sitting in the seat..as the clips are mounted in an Angle...

Here you can see the clip...and it has this "downward" angle to it.There are TWO clips holding the panel

    Backside of the panel

DAB antenna going in the car

Took out the passenger airbag to guide the antenna wire in a proper manner..and not just fastening it on the underside of the dashboard
The passenger airbag is fastened with a ten mm head ,on the underside of the dashboard,You will need a long extention and a 10mm socket..you will see the hole on the underside of the dash when looking under there..i did unfortunatly not get a picture of that.

The Dab antenna mounted, and the wire is of course now hidden behind the A pillar cover

Here it is finished. With "Dab" feature, tuned in on the proper radio station

Also a little "shot" of the heater control panel which i replaced.AND a final picture of my two "Stars"

    Thanx for looking

    Stephan,

So for what reason did Norway shut down the country's FM system? That seems ODD to me since it I think FM offers the best radio frequencies.

What does DAB+ stand for? Does it work as good as FM? Sounds like a way for some businesses to make money thru obsolescence to me.

Which DAB unit did you get? I need to fit one to the daily driver since we go to Norway a couple of times each year. It was awfully quiet in Trøndelag this summer.

To be fair..im not sure what the REAL reason is..it is mainly a political thing i guess..There has been alot of resistance against this DAB thing.Especially in the "country sides"of Norway...where there are alot of mountains...the DAB radio has proven to be pretty poor..and as a result...at an earlier stage..there was very much a low understanding of WHY the "goverment" would do this..and shut down the FM radio network..and introduce an old system like the DAB.
DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting.,,and it is indeed a very old "high tech" way of transmitting radio signals. And DAB+ is the "latest" type...which is "better" than DAB....but still has proven to be not as good as FM....where FM can transmitt signals even when there is poor connection..the DAB+ just cuts out..and the emergency section (fire and ambulance and police)has been very concerned about the FM network beeing shut down.....because of important radio transmissions MAY not be AVAILABLE for the whole population...because of geographic reasons(Mountains/poor network of "DAB sender stations" in a way .

I like to see it PURELY AND MAINLY as a "Buisness" thing...that the shutting down of the FM network has actually happend.

yeah mate...they closed of the FM transmissions up north first....now the shutting down of the fm network has reached the southern part of the norway...and at the end of september...all over norway..there are NO FM ,,exept for SOME local radio stations...if i have understood it correctly.

the headunit i purchased. is a continental cdd7418-UB OR
it does feature Bluetooth,Dab+,USB port in the front,Cd player, and the lovely orange lighting it is not a very good "stereo" in the sense that a car audio freak would love it...there are not many line outs..n stuff...but then again..im no expert
But for my use..it is indeed perfect

Understandable, I'm sure whatever you decide to go with next will be nice either way.. Quick question off topic, hopefully you can answer. Is it possible to replace the US type AC controls in my car with the round knob euro style like yours? Looks like there's more fan speed options on the euro controls. Is that correct?

The automatic (ACC) and manual (MCC) systems are completely different. It's possible to retrofit but requires an enormous amount of items changed, including the entire heater box / condenser, converting from monovalve to duovalve, all new wiring harness, etc... probably 50-75 hours labor not including parts.

I also would love MCC but sadly back in the 80's MBNA decided that people who live in North America should not have the option to choose MCC.

Im not sure about the euro vent buttons VS the US (Full auto AC) system.
But is it correct that the "US" (Full auto AC) has only ONE fan speed? either on or off?

We have three settings. Max fan speed, auto fan speed, and minimum fan speed.

The problem is, many times we just want "medium" and that's not an option!

That's what I figured. Sure would be nice to have more fan speeds. I only have low/high, even on AUTO its always on high. Appreciate the info.

Yeah like GSXR said...i could easily see that it would take quite alot of different parts..to change up the system.

The "manual" system is "standard" in the european ones...and we rarely see the Automatic versions. The manual version is very nice indeed..with all the settings you can see in the picture..4 different fan speeds..and OFF...

Auto will adjust to a variable medium speed based on cabin temperature. This generally requires fiddling with the temp dial and waiting patiently. In summer with AC on, it helps to aim one of the center vents upward to the sensor by the overhead dome light. And you may need to adjust the temp setting closer to the middle even if you want hot or cold air. All of which is why we want the MCC setup with manual speed selection!

And one should not forget about the dual zones... They are the bees knees when the wife is with me in the car, no bickering about the temperature in the car. It's called civilization folks.

Don't know if it's on facelift cars only, but there's also one "hidden" setting between the "I" and "0" on the manual klimaanlage. On that setting the fan is off, but the system is open, so you get some circulation at speed. In the "0" position the HVAC system is closed. This basically gives you five different levels of airflow into the HVAC.

Here's a picture of the dot where this position is, you can feel it when you're operating the fan control:

This basically gives you five different levels of airflow into the HVAC.

Here's a picture of the dot where this position is, you can feel it when you're operating the fan control:

THIS. This is the one thing I wish the stupid US-standard automatic climate control systems have ----- an in between setting with no fan but allows for outside air to circulate in.

Yea in my part of the world, southern Sweden, the car climate doesn't require that much moderation (in any car).

It just needs a nudge in the right direction, so I quite often have the settings on my klima to that spot with no fan, and either ventilation set on "between feet and window" or all front outlets. I always have the temp rolls set to 22 degrees Celsius. When it needs an adjustment, I turn the fan speed to either "I" or "II". The "III" or "IIII" I very rarely use, maybe if the cars been parked in the sun, or one of these rare days when we have really hot weather. And, I use the dehumidification button a lot, because of the damp climate, and the fact that I don't daily drive it, so it usually needs to be dried out interior wise.
But really, there's not that much adjustment needed with the manual klima.

    Sorry for the hijacking lowman!

I guess this should be an issue of it's own and Another thread. I have a fully functioning automatic AC and enjoy it fully. I Think many did not read the
instructions OR understood the function of the settings. I do not understand, really, the complaint here...

The main complaints with ACC are:

    1) No ability to select medium fan speed
    2) No ability to turn the fan off while still allowing airflow

    Stephan,

Thanks for explaining DAB to me although it seams like a step backwards. A political 'Lobbiest' must have money invested in the DAB system and is creating a new electronics market by making FM obsolete. What other reason could there be if you are truly losing radio reception. The DAB or DAB+ sounds like a patch fix something like putting 'Rabbit Ears' on top of your TV for better reception.

Switching gears, On the US - HVAC vs Euro. The manual controls sound great but as discussed here would be a PITA job to convert a US car.

In defense of our Automatic units, I think they work fine as long as they are in top notch condition and running on all cylinders. If one component is not giving it's ALL the system SUCKS.

Living in SoCal where it will be over 100F today is a real test of the AC and mine at least has been up to the task in the past and I have an 040 car. I will say a black car parked outside on a hot sunny day is hard to cool down quickly in short distance drives. It will take approx 15 minutes at least and if your running errands and are in and out of the car it will never be real cool. Once the car is cooled down I have found that if the temp wheel is set on MAX cool I can set the fan speed to low and the recirculate cabin air switch is turned on, the interior can be a very comfortable environment.
Also once cool you can fiddle with the temp wheel if you want and get the fan to slow down to about medium speed.

All in all I think the US system works fine as long as it's 100%.
    Terry
