ADMIN UPDATE 3: Price reduced to $32,000, Jan-2017. See post #64 for details. Thread title updated.

I've was considering purchasing this one myself, but decided to pass....just not the right time to put 20K+ into a hobbie car.

Dave (Klink) and I both met with the owner and gave it a look over. It appears to be a nice original, unmolested example. Reported to have had no collision work, always garaged (and shows as such), and in the same family since new (passed between husband, the original purchaser, and wife, after divorce). Obviously never a primary use car with the sub 71K miles. It's being offered by their adult son.

It strikes me as a low mileage example that has never really needed or had a lot of mechanical needs or updates, and likely hasn't been under the eye of a specialist of the breed in a while. From talking with the son, I got the impression that the car has had basic maintenance on an "as needed" basis. Paint and interior cosmetics appear original and quite nice with only very minor blemishes that you have to look for, including the typical loose headliner. Upper wiring harness had been changed, but other 2 (lower and ETA) appear to be original. The most glaring mechanical needs that I recall we identified were that the self leveling suspension hydraulic system pump (in engine compartment) needs resealing, along with misting/leaking valve cover gaskets. Otherwise the car ran and drove out well.

Dave and I agreed that this car could easily be brought back to really pristine condition with the typical maintenance catch up and some minor cosmetic attention.

I'm local and would love to set up to take a look at her but for some reason the Bham Craigs list site won't open right now.
Anybody else open the site and send me the contact info?

Looks like an alarm light on the steering column. Aftermarket in this location?

Yuck, that was a sloppy install! Looks like a Clifford alarm light. I'd relocate that somewhere less gaudy. Should be an easy fix...

This is another car I really hope goes to an enthusiast and not a flipper. Particularly to an enthusiast who understands the $5-10K rule as it sounds like lack of use might mean it needs on the higher end of that number.

If I had a car with this mileage I wonder how much I would drive it? Is the mileage low enough that I'd be worried about about lowering its value?

Why is pearl black over grey the anti-Christ in every ones eyes? When I think of a mercedes of this era this is the color combo that comes to mind for me, maybe it's because my parents had s600 and sl600 in this color combo...personally I think it's classic and love it on my e5e

I don't know. I have to say the interior is definitely cooler in the sun. No screams of agony and the smell of burning flesh after getting in. I love mine too.

What do you guys think this car would be worth, real world, if all the maintainance were caught up and headliner done?

Didn't sound like there was a lot of maintenance to catch up on. The low miles helps the value, I think asking price is a tad high in current condition, might be worth asking price if it were all fixed up?

Thanks bro. Craigs list here must have been down last night as it's opening now. Just sent the owner a message and asked to set up a showing. Just bought the wife a car 2 weeks back so timing here couldn't be worse. I likely can't play but can give you guys a heads up on seeing her in the flesh.

I think the car is worth every bit of $22k. Try to find another sub 80k mile one for less. You will be looking for a very long time.

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Gray, 71kmi, $22k (Inverness, AL)

About this particular car: These are test drive and cursory observation notes. This was not a full-blown PPI. I do not know this owner, nor do I "know" this particular car. The car was not on a lift, or even in a shop, but I did stick my head under it and a few places with a flashlight to see what I could see.

    The good stuff:
I find this particularly important, because it is the one thing you cannot simply bolt on. The body, paint, and the interior are shockingly good save for the sagged headliner and misinstalled driver door interior panel where the armrest retaining hooks missed the opening in the door sheet metal. A quick removal and reinstallation of the door panel will put that right. The only thing that really bothered me about the body at all was that the rubber gaskets of the roof rails had either shrunk, or were knocked in by a buffer or wax applicator at some time. It looks like it could be put right without even needing new parts, possibly only new roof rail clips, because they don't like to be pulled loose more than once.

The AC was cold, and blew out of the correct vents for the mode. That medicinal/freshly opened box of Band-Aids smell of 134A was not present in the interior. The auxiliary fan low-speed worked, as did the fan clutch. The rear leveling was working correctly, and the ride quality was correct. No suspension noises were noted, but we were only on smooth roads. It has some new-ish, but cheap tires. Most of us would be replacing those day one, regardless. It has the original pilot HX-MXM spare. There did not appear to be any damage in or about the battery container. The upper engine harnes has been replaced, but the other harnesses including the ETA are original. What I could see of the transmission looked completely dry, and the shift quality was correct. No sludge or varnish was noted when looking through the oil filler opening. The wildly trouble prone first version light alloy front calipers have been replaced with the small iron calipers, as per USA version repair instructions.

    The drawbacks are:
The remaining harnesses, as just mentioned. Also, the upper harness had been inexpertly routed, and the firewall pass-through bushing while not broken, has been incorrectly reinstalled. That can easily be fixed when the lower harness is replaced. Indeed, that lower harness should be replaced at the same time as the motor mounts, which feel so bad, they are probably original. SLRS fluid is leaking down the left front of the engine. Count on it needing a tandem pump reseal. It has had the belt tensioner replaced at some point in the recent past, but whoever replaced it omitted the spacer sleeve between the tension adjustment fulcrum and the tensioner. A simple R+R of the tensioner to replace the spacer would put this right. I think I am remembering that the shift selector rod bushings were disintegrated, causing the known looseness and rattling in the shifter, but my memory could be failing me on this point, not that it isn't a dirt simple and cheap repair anyway. Windshield washer fluid leaks out of the bottle, and that is the warning lamp that I saw illuminated on the instrument panel. The cause could be any of the usual and known sources. The plastic of the bottle itself appeared to be intact. The brake fluid looks aged and dark. It's had one of those Mickey Mouse Clifford alarm systems stuck in it. Looks like it was done when it was relatively new. I did not notice any ill affects from it, except for the lamp behind the steering wheel that some have already noted and consider unsightly. A "push through" rivet or two is missing in the plastic panel that comprises the rearmost trunk wall lining, but it does not look like any of this is been taken apart for any kind of collision work. I did not see any evidence of collision work anywhere. That doesn't mean it's never had any, just means it's damn good if it has. The external plastics of the USA headlamps are starting to deteriorate. The gray internal plastics of the insturment cluster are disintegrating and precipitating tiny white spots. I have seen this a number of times on cars that have sat unused in dark garagesfor long periods.

This part is both good and bad: This car drives with that drivetrain "tightness" of a car that was driven a low mileage around town by grandma, likely because it was. You experienced motorheads will know what I'm talking about, that certain high friction leaden-ness that's difficult to describe, but you know what it when you feel it. It's like it hasn't broken in and loosened up any. It's a sensation as distinctive as its absence. I don't know about the rum and sodomy, but once this thing is tweaked, it definitely needs the lash.

Overall? This car would be an excellent starting point for the person that doesn't care so much what the total package is going to cost, but simply wants a car that's fantastic when it's done. Apply the GVZ $5 to $10K rule (hey, you never know, there could be an evaporator lurking in there somewhere, and surprises always turn up when a low mileage car gets put into some kind of actual use) and this thing will be magnificent...

    I'm thinking rum and sodomy...

Thanks for this, Klink. Based on what you've described and what is see, this could easily be a $35k car when fully sorted out. Those of us who have fully sorted low milers likely aren't selling them for $35k. That's this one plus $10k give or take. I counted about $5k in what you indicated -- tires, stainless steel brake lines with the super blue fluid, headliner, wire harnesses, strut mounts, transmission service and whatever chassis rubber you unearth along the way, for starters. And even then you're stuck with 16's. Add another grand or two if you want real shoes, and we haven't even discussed stereo or exhaust. You can spend $10k in a hurry after you buy it.

But damn that's $10k well spent. If you can only get past that pearl black...

    Jokes,

Congrats, Mike. Make sure and have a shop go through the car....the car may seem to be in acceptable mechanical order, but after I spent a truck full of money on my car it was night and day. It went from acceptable to a bunch of fun and a surprising kick in the pants - it was night and day the improvements after some major overhauling.

    Best Regards,
    Chris

Thanks to all. This is my second 500e/e500. Purchased a new one in 1994, which my brother now owns. I am part owner of a small shop and have experience with older MB/Porsche's. This 500 is very nice and only needs maintenance and several repairs/parts to bring it up to par. Mike

Excellent! As you can see up above, I was one of the first to look at this car just in case anybody else was interested in it. I'm so glad that it found a quality new home.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news... but you know the standard Euro lights are not correct, right? You now have four fog lights and two high beams, and the 500E should have two fog lights and four high beams. The correct 500E Euro lights are difficult to source these days since one side is NLA, you have to buy E500 Euro lights swap on 500E Euro lenses to "build" a set of the correct lights. Lots of recent posts/threads on this topic if you're interested.

They have to come from Germany. They can't be purchased from USA dealers. Keep in mind that adding 500E lenses to standard Euro lights will not result in the correct lighting... the reflectors are also different.

Since the complete lights are NLA as I mentioned previously, you have to buy E500 lights and 500E lenses, then swap lenses. More info here on the vendor:

    FS: 92 500E 199/grey 74Kml, no price - area code Central FL

Just popped up in another forum a few minutes ago by a brand new poster.

Anyone know this car? There is one picture of the Vin on the A pillar, hard to make it out though

(Edit: After magnifying the A pillar photo, and making a couple o guesses, this vin # is valid in EPC)

    VIN: WDBEA36E6NB765067

    http://www.benzworld.org/forums/sale...74k-miles.html

    92 500e 74k miles

This 500e is a two-owner example that is completely stock and drives and performs as new, even smells new. Clean CarFax. All equipment functions as designed. I even sent the original Becker radio off to be repaired and now works perfect. Original exterior paint exhibits some frontal rock chips and several small dings. No rust can be identified anywhere, including in the vulnerable battery/trunk area. The interior is nearly perfect with a new OE headliner and just several minor nicks in front and rear center console wood. All leather surfaces are as new and very soft . Most importantly, all of the following has been completed within last 1000 miles and costing nearly $20k.

If you are looking for a 500e this is the one, everything has been addressed and ready to be driven or stored in your collection. These cars are becoming harder to find in original condition and its not surprising with only 1500 being imported to the USA.

The pricing for this one will be interesting. I say this, having reviewed my prior thoughts on the matter. In my view, it's not very often that we get "real" market test points for sub 100k mile cars (Hagerty charts not qualifying as "real" for me). A bit of idle curiosity for me, but curiosity nonetheless.

    Cheers,

    Tudor,

If you look at all the pictures in the link, the odometer now shows 74,803 miles, and the car has Florida plates on it in other pictures.

Also the phone number area code is for Winter Haven, FL.

    Earlier I texted the number and politely asked for a price, just checked my cell, and I received a text back;

He said he forgot to put the asking price in the Ad & he texted --- $38,500...

When I was looking for a w124.036 last month, I spoke with Jim Hatch - Hatch and Sons is asking low 40K USD for an '94 E500 in Smoke Silver and 71K miles.

Wow. That is optimistic, IMO... should need nothing for $39k. Depo headlights is inexcusable at that price point (sorry, Mike).

Re-reading post #34, I guess 11 months is a "long time"? Guess that makes my 14 years an eternity!

Maybe a new coolant reservoir tank too (to complete the white plastic ensemble).

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 74kmi, $39k (Florida)

Yeah, I saw those things as well. My ballpark last year was $35k (post #22) fully sorted. Maybe this car is headlights and a coolant tank away, maybe not. But I still think that's about the right number. It's a nice, relatively low mile legend of a motorcar. We know that, even if we undervalue the experience a bit.

Prices are never lower for these cars than in the opinion of these E500E Board members. Others are generally willing to pay more, and my guess is this one sells somewhere near to the asking price before the end of 2016. 2017 is 25 years for this car. We'll see.

I think before you own one, you see it as having the best of both worlds -- Benz powertrain, luxury and safety and Porsche handling, engineering and build quality. And it certainly does. Owning them, you realize they also have the worst of both worlds -- expensive Benz components, and a certain "disassemble to service or repair" quality from Porsche. And that wears on your wallet, affecting your perception of value. But money is just money, and these are money well spent to me.

    ;-D

What causes that? My cluster panel has some "dandruff" but nothing remotely like this one. Replacing or cleaning the housing is on my to do list. I was thinking maybe it could be cleaned off but "plastic disintegration" sounds like simply cleaning won't do it.

I've seen this on a LOT of cars in Florida. Not sure what the exact cause is, but seems to be related to the climate in the southeast. I recall Ron's in-famous 8kmi car in FL had the same thing, and thought it was bizarre that even a no-miles car had the issue. Clearly related to time/climate, not miles. The good news is that it's a relatively easy fix (same with the headlights).

Any chance this is due to salt recrystalizing? I've only seen this (albeit in just a few) on cars which have been near the ocean.

Yes, I've had the car for just at one year. Change in plans is why it is for sale. GSXR - My original purchased 1994 E500 is still in the family - 22 years! Always garaged since here in Florida past year. Original Alabama garaged car. KLINK - Cluster this way when purchased. GSXR - Original headlights, surrounds, and wiper assemblies are included in sale. Also including original MB lightweight car cover. Ntrepid - I'll be happy to change coolant tank for buyer. I am here to answer any other questions. Thanks, Mike

I think before you own one, you see it as having the best of both worlds -- Benz powertrain, luxury and safety and Porsche handling, engineering and build quality. And it certainly does. Owning them, you realize they also have the worst of both worlds -- expensive Benz components, and a certain "disassemble to service or repair" quality from Porsche. ....
Perhaps I can provide a datapoint. I bought jeff0093's signal red car. Actually its arriving on the transporter today so I'm thrilled.
Jeff's car had 63K miles and the condition is superb --- demerits include a very small section of back glass delamination, a k40 install in the instrument cluster that I can revert to stock, and a little section of broken paint in the plastic under the rear bumper --- easy and quick to reshoot. There is just tiny little bit of rust under the battery tray which I can treat easily with POR15

Jeff's car is almost a unicorn -- only 17 signal red 500Es brought into the states with a cream-beige interior.

Pluses to Jeff's car include ---

    a) I think the body is better condition. There's no big broken-paint ding in the front fender flare and there are no scrapes in the front fenders as in this car.

    b) As well I got a bunch of goodies --- the unicorn last set of 18" Neez wheels and new Michelin Pilot Super Sport Rubber, an extra First Gear Start Valve Body, an a new European 500E headlights - OEM, not DEPO.

As well, the car has had a pampered life through its existence --- it didn't go through a period of massively deferred maintenance like this one did.

Anyways, I paid a price that is very similar to this asking price .... and I certainly fall into the category you mention --- "before you own one, you see it as having the best of both worlds -- Benz powertrain, luxury and safety and Porsche handling, engineering and build quality. And it certainly does. Owning them, you realize they also have the worst of both worlds -- expensive Benz components, and a certain "disassemble to service or repair" quality from Porsche."

Actually I consider MB prices for this car to be not unreasonable compared to insane air-cooled 911/964/993 parts prices!

B/T/W, Jordan is friend of mine helping sell the car. He can be reached on his cell listed above. The car is located in Lakeland, FL, just South of I4 between Tampa and Orlando, so access is easy. I will try to quickly answer any questions posed here. Finally, my 1988 944 TS is on its way to Dubai. Great buyer with large P-car collection. For those of you who know me, this all original 500E is just as nice as the 944TS. Thanks, Mike
