    OWNER – DerFuror

    Build: 05/93; Delivered: 04Jun1993
    Paint: 040U Black
    Interior: 271 Black Leather
    Mileage: 190,000 (305,775km)

I am the 3rd owner of this car. It spent the majority of its life in Texas, USA with also a couple years in California. The original owner was a Doctor; the second owner a software engineer/entrepreneur. I thank them for taking such good care of this car for me. The majority of mileage has been highway. It is stock except for the audio system, coolant temp sensor resistor & powerchip. Upon purchase, the only item that had to be replaced was the Starter Lockout Switch located on the transmission. It has been running like a scalded dog ever since.

I dreamed about this car when I was younger. I now have my dream come true. The only way I will part with this car is via a completely ridiculously high offer no mortal can refuse or via the Jaws of Life. I am amazed at the high-end automobiles this Benz crushes on the motorway whether thru sheer power or cunning…ahh, the silky sound of Fury unleashed from under the hood when mashing the accelerator pedal to the floor; hence its name, DerFuror. My heart rate is elevated just writing about this car…I gotta have a smoke…

Awesome! I finally read your great stories of how you got this car, and the car looked simply stunning in the images. Except one thing: the USA headlights. Great that you're changing them, this car will look perfect.

Thank you, Jelmer. As mentioned in the roadtrip story, DerFuror was a Steal & I have never 2nd guessed my commitment to obtain it. This car is a bad (predominantly stock) mammajamma. I've heard of odometer roll-backs, but I've never considered an odometer roll-up until this car. I'm still trying to find 90Kmiles of wear on this car, let alone 190K!

Besides the trivial cosmetic replacement doo-dads I've b*tched about in my posts, the POs took care of the essentials that have this car exhibiting the characteristics of a 60-70K 500E.

    Re: Euro city-vision

The wiring of city lights to foglight circuit is complete & tests OK.

This method allows the corner/parking lights to remain as stand-alones. The 5 Watt city lights activate with a pull of the fog light switch & run in conjunction with the bumper-mounted fog/driving lights.

The citys/fogs will perform Daytime Running Light (DRL) duty when required. The headlights will only be used for night time driving (thereby keeping H4 bulb hours usage lower).

    Thanks, drew.
The car will remain garaged for a few more months. I like the character of headlight wipers on these cars & have a proper set of wipers & panels for the new Euro head lights. One of the next jobs will be detailing the wiper arms & panels with some wet-sanding & new paint.

Sorry to take so long. I usually have a camera with me for photo-ops, but the car has been running so flawlessly that I forget about everything else except driving it!

This pic isn't the best (I need to change some camera settings to better capture the lighting effect). The City lights are very visible to the naked eye, but not so much when captured in digital image.

    KK 006.JPG

I'll try for some better representative images later.

PS: I let my Sister drive the car today after taking her for a little blast down our local autobahn (it's kind of nice to be a passenger once in a while).

She was very happy to drive, but refused all of my requests for a WOT-stomping (says her first 500E encounter is still well-etched upon her memory & she 's perfectly content to drive this car like a normal person).

After driving the 500E, she said it sucked to have to now drive hers (which ain't a bad car) back home!

Ok. Later is now. Here they are.

To reiterate: These City lights are 5W bulbs wired into foglight circuit which allows parking lights to still operate as standalones.

5W is better than 65W. No reason to burn the lowbeams during daylight hours. City lights run as daytime running lights; reduces/conserves the hours use of the halogen headlights.

    Re: Steering Wheel

...for the steering wheel wh*res out there. This came with the car when I bought it. Don't know when or where it came about, but I likes it.
    Steering Wheel 001.jpgSteering Wheel 004.jpg

Funny story: The burl will make an audible clicking sound as it expands/contracts due to exposure to sunlight & temperature change. I remember reading the PO's documentation when I bought the car...the PO paid buku dollars for a tech to figure this & a speedometer gear noise out. The Tech never did.

    Re: Like a Drug

I've got this b*tch of a 500E dialed in & I will make up any reason to go out and drive it...even if just for a short flog to ease the fixation.

I love the little red electric eye of this MB Quart amp which indicates its doing its job. An external hard drive in the center rolltop houses my tunes. I'm still working my way thru bands starting with "A".
    AMPd 001.jpgAMPd 002.jpg

Just a short while ago, listening to this, I was powering up an inclined interstate on ramp at WOT. I rocketed into the mainstream (safely) pushing 100mph. My radar was rocking because right in front of me was a State Trooper SUV.

Needless to say, I backed off on the Warp Factor, settled in behind the Trooper & behaved. I got off the Interstate at the next exit.

I do the same with my 036's. It saves my $$$ Osram Hyper H4's as I always run the fogs+city lights during daylight hours. And it looks pretty cool too, IMO.

Isn't it nice to live in a state where you can use the bumper filler panel?

I don't know. I'm not familiar with European lighting standards. Maybe one of our members can answer.

However, the Euro headlights on this car each have a socket for a city light bulb. The original US DOT headlights do not.

Yup, project scope creep. It seems to always start out like this for me..."well, as long as I'm taking this apart I may as well do these things too".

This time it all started out as a simple '93 Euro headlight conversion. Lights have been done since February, but now I barely have enough room to tip-toe thru the shop.

At least everything that's been dismantled is getting addressed & completed...albeit kinda slowly.

Battle-scarred Euro wipers are refurbished & ready for installation.

    P5220007.JPG

Equally battle-scarred wiper panels are refurbished & awaiting final paint...

    P5220005.JPG

...which is awaiting the bumper I decided to disassemble & touch up as long as I had it off the car...

    P5220003.JPG P5220004.JPG

..and since the bumper was off, why not detail the fading, unloved air scoops that I've been forlornly staring at for a couple months, too?

    P5220002.JPG

Then there's all the junk in the trunk that has to get reinstalled before I start the next "little" project...which is already in progress.

    P5220008.JPG

    Incorrigible.

    Scored a proper low-mileage Bosch 150A alternator (010 154 83 02) for a good price.

Just passed all bench tests with flying colors. It will be installed whenever the serpentine belt gets replaced.

    Finally...

I decided to move in the right direction. A while back, I sent the front end parts to my friend’s body shop for proper painting. I had done most of the body work & priming on these items, but then concluded that a rattle-can spray job wouldn’t do the bumper or the car justice. Anybody need a big unused can of APS Tower 040 black paint?

The wiper panels & bumper are now installed. I’m loving the look. Cosmetically, the previously road-blasted bumper was the only feature of this car that really bugged me (I got along with the US Spec headlights, but once the Euros became available, the US Specs quickly became history). The project that began as a Euro headlight conversion is now complete.

    Along the way,
    • City light circuit was connected to fog light circuit (to function as daytime running lights) leaving parking lights as stand-alones.
    • New headlight washer hoses (black ones), connectors & grommets were installed
    • Refurbished MY94 headlight wipers installed
    • Any missing or beat miscellaneous bumper hardware was installed/replaced
    • New drop-in front dash speakers were installed

…and probably a few other things I no longer remember doing.

It's hard to capture in pictures how good the front end now looks, but in person it looks good.

SCORE! That looks like the correct one which should not need re-clocking to install on the M119. The terminals will be in a slightly different position (actually, easier to access than stock) but it will bolt right up. Check the pulley diameter, if different, you may want to swap it.

BTW, upgrading to the newer style oil filler cap (000 010 13 85) is an excellent recommendation.

It is the best upgrade you can do to your car for $5! (except for the gray settable switches, of course...)

Your hands & fingers will love you again during oil check & change times.

    Re: OWNER – DerFuror

It's a crime that the oil caps don't have the poon-appeal that the gray switches do.

When "parking" with your partner, say on a nice romantic overlook spot ... one opens the door for a bit of fresh air ... and one can deftly and subtly pull the gray switch with a barely audible "ping" to outen the lights....so much more smooth than reaching up to turn off the interior lights via the overhead switch.....

I'll bet the good folks at MBUSA must be scratching their heads when they get sudden runs on parts like the gray switches and oil caps....

BTW, that 150-amp alternator is an excellent thing to have both for piece of mind and for submarined poon-appeal, simply because its' better output guarantees a better-charged battery ... helpful for those romantic evenings at said romantic overlook spot with the music playing on the radio [off the battery]. Better charged battery = longer "parking" time.... fewer worries about a weak battery.

That's cuz nobody can see the voluptuous curves & brightly colored hieroglyphics of these new-style caps incarcerated under the hood.

If you're going to go to the trouble of installing a retrofitted Euro underhood mood light, I'd also install a Euro underhood SPOTlight to highlight said cap + heiroglyphics... the underhood spotlights were only offered/available in Mediterranean countries, not even in Germany.

Thanks for the suggestion. Certainly a possibility for a grille insert. I need to research the item (starting with a real good picture of one on a .036).

Before anyone starts a poll...I now have both (picked up a German-made pre-facelift W124 avantgarde grille for a decent price a few months ago). The inserts can be switched out as desired.

The original grill insert is too dull looking, even when painted. The avantgrade grill insert does serve a purpose for better air intake and it does look more sportier. With Euro headlights, the car looks mismatched with the OEM insert. If one keeps the car completely stock, then sure, keep the original look. But how many of us, .036 owners, keep their cars stock?

Derf, the avantgarde grille looks great. Did buy only the grill insert? For my car, I only bought the gril insert, as I saw no need to buy a whole new grill.

The avantgarde gril insert you have now is identical to mine.

Surprisingly, it didn’t…and that’s why I didn’t procrastinate much over buying it. Complete grille delivered from Germany for just under $140. Company named quantiTec located near Berlin. Shipping cost almost as much as the item itself. Delivery was slow; a couple weeks. Positive feedback from all other buyers of this particular grille helped in making my purchase decision.

The materials quality is quite good for the price. Chrome plated brass shell. I measured with calipers & the shell material is same thickness as original grille. The model I bought has Black (similar to 040 color) ABS plastic insert with chromed face strips. The black blends in very nicely with my 040 car color to really set off the chrome accents. All the mounting holes line up. Fit to hood is very good, but not exact. I filed the Mercedes Star hole slightly with a circular file to more easily insert the Star assembly (FSM Procedure 88-405). The various assembly attachment parts holding the grille together are similar in design to the original grille parts, but the original hardware is naturally better.

The only real drawback is how a vertical rib on the insert slightly conflicts with the hood pull’s resting position. In reality, the rib should be omitted as is with the original insert. On the original insert, the hood pull’s face lines up exactly within the insert’s vertical & horizontal ribbing; & in its resting position, the hood pull fills this omitted void and provides the illusion that it is an integral part of the overall ribbing. Not so with this Avantgarde model.

I haven’t determined whether or not to modify the Avantgarde insert because of this conflict. I’m pondering several options from removing part of the conflicting rib to doing nothing at all. I’m in no hurry to decide.

Regarding the original grille…I will leave it original. It will always stay with the car, but not always on the car.

Fix: Buy the facelift-style pull tab, which is shaped differently. P/N 124-887-05-27.

There are pictures on this board, I can't remember exactly who posted them, of a repainted original grill and it looks great. A nice black semi gloss makes it stand out and contrast much better than the dull gray. I actually think that the original grill looks better with the amber indicators and the avantgarde grill has a slight edge with clear indicators.

Watkins Glen Vintage Grand Prix 2014

An awesome start to the 2014 Vintage Grand Prix up in Watkins Glen, NY. Sunny, 90F degrees & lots of vintage cars. MG is the featured marque this year & I'm kinda chewed because its the 60th anniversary of my MGTF & I failed in having it completely prepared for attending this event.

I get there early in the morning with a friend, park the 500E in my usual area & start walking. My friend needed to be back home by 1pm, so after watching the pre-war MGs qualify, we head back to the 500E.

I'm taking pictures of stuff when I hear him say, "Nobody circles the wagons like MG!".

I say, "What the hell you talking about?". He says, "Look!"

No sh*t. My car has been inundated by a hundred MGs. I'm parked perpendicular to their verticality.

My friend says, "Your cars spend a lot of time in the garage next to each other. Looks like your TF knocked up your Benz & it just hatched all its babies!".

I told my friend it's a long walk home.

The car is running superbly. Good times.

Re: Watkins Glen Vintage Grand Prix 2014

Day3 conditions at Watkins Glen were the best…dry, mostly a brilliantly sunny +70F degrees with a cool breeze appreciated by both fans & vintage motors alike. Lots of Dr. John music for a low-key Sunday ride up to the track after a nice breakfast while watching Mercedes win the F1 Monza race on tv made a great start to the day. No hooning or power-passing on this peaceful morning (unlike the previous afternoon).

Spent most of the day up top in one of my favorite perches; the Ninety/Seneca Grandstands between turns 1 & 2 which give a commanding panoramic view of 1/3 of the track (including start/finish) & 360 degrees of the surrounding countryside.

    WGI_2014 035.jpg WGI_2014 026.jpg

We utilized our big umbrellas up in the grandstands because of the sun’s intensity. It was a sun-worshipper’s dream day. During the scheduled hour lunch break we hammed it up for “across the track’s” benefit while stripping down for suntan sessions.

(Below left: Here's a telephoto bird's eye view of the 500E from the top of the stands...proudly wearing its previous Saturday night bug guts & water-spots).

    WGI_2014 033.jpgWGI_2014 002.jpg

(Above right: The window of opportunity to take a good picture of a rare classic can be challenging & fleeting. This person blocked my ability to take pictures of rare cars for a....for a...a long...long time. How inconsiderate!)

The vintage races are my favorite because of so many interesting historical classes of Race Groups competing & exhibiting in one location along with all the bustling activities of participants & spectators. You can free-roam almost anywhere & the race teams are quite approachable.

(Below:A huge turnout for the Thornley Cup / Collier Cup Vintage "B" cars. The Group 2 pre-1973 Open Wheel cars were staples at the Glen thruout the 1960s).

    WGI_2014 054.jpg WGI_2014 069.jpg

(Below: A 1930 Alpha Romeo leads the pack of pre-war MGTs closely followed by a Lester. The pre-war cars take to the track from pit lane. I have books with very similar black & white pictures of this scene. Etched in time once again).

    WGI_2014 078.jpg WGI_2014 022.jpg

And before you know, it’s over. You drive home with nice memories & the anticipation for next year’s gathering.

    WGI_2014 085.jpgWGI_2014 084.jpg

(Above: Once again I believe I was the lone Wolf in Sheep's Clothing at the Glen this year. Parked with the Porsche boys at the McDonalds Grandstand).

The Vintage Races usually mark the end of the Glen race season, but this one gets extended a little longer. The Ferrari Challenge of North America will be here in two weeks.
