If it has the Bosch LH-Jetronic on the SL engine, then yes it fits.

Yes, it is plug & play, direct fit, zero issues.

How did you blow the motor? It's hard to kill M119's!!

Timing jumped , tow it home and the crank won't turn anymore .

Interesting about the fan clutch. About 18 months ago I carried out exactly the same engine swop as you're doing, but I don't recall there being an issue with the fan clutch.

The only two things I recall are (a) we swopped the whole drivetrain, and there was a problem with the rear gearbox mount, and (b) we had an engine from a right-hand drive SL, so the starter motor had to be moved to the other side of the engine, which made us scratch our heads a bit!

I seem also to recall we used the original upper wiring harness, and that on the SL was too long?

    Good luck with your swop!

The original post is from Aug 2015.

I looked around in his other posts, didn't see anything that looked like the swap happened, but I didn't spend a lot of time looking.

Maybe he's still gathering up parts...

I am pretty sure the fan clutch on w124 500 is slimmer than a r129 500

    i traded my 500 for the sl500

Fan clutch is different on the .974/.975 engines (vs other M119 engines), yes the clutch is slimmer for the W124 chassis.

The metal fan blade is the same between all W124/R129/W140 with M119 engine.

Aha ......... that solves a mystery!

After we'd done the engine swop from the SL to the 500E, we discovered, under severe braking, the slight forward movement of the engine would cause the fan blade to just slightly brush the rear of the radiator. Never thought that it might be due to not re-using the slimmer W124 clutch.

We put it down to the fact that the radiator was possibly slightly further back than it should be - due to some PO having had a front shunt at sometime.

We cured the problem by shaving a very small amount from the front tip of each fan blade, and then rebalancing it. How did we do that? By using a gravity driven balancer once used for motor bikes wheels!

Raven do you know of a true E500 genius maestro mechanic in the UK who would be able to analyse and cure my residual vibration/sensitivity to wheel-balancing issues? I really need a demi-god because I've gone through all known mortals and so far not cured the problem..
