Wood /leather steering wheels,,options..some shop who offers different steering wheels?

    hey people

Does someone know "where" to get..or if there is a special company who specialises in wood /leather steeering wheels?

or does someone in here maybe have one for sale?

Maybe this one should be in the "want to buy" section..

but i thought this may be the place as its not just a want to buy thread..more of a "what steering wheels are out there"

    i would apreactiate all posts.

    thanx

I think you can figure out which wheels fit the W124, then get a MOMO you like. The W140 or W201 "I Think" fit the w124 but not sure. I went from a wagon wheel on the C126 to a much smaller pair of wheels that I change every six months or so.

The smaller diameter w124 wheel is stock, a sporty improvement over the W126 which is about 15-20mm larger diameter. So changing between the two cars for me is about the same "handling" in my hands. Are you looking for a "D" style wheel?

Re: Wood /leather steering wheels,,options..some shop who offers different steering wheels?

You can use any wheel from 92-99. You can use the W202 wheel from 2000, all the R129's and the R171 wheel from 97-2004. What you can't use is any wheel that uses a two stage deployment airbag (normally from 2000 on) and these are most identifiable by the integrated horn buttons in the airbag.

If your car is a 92-93, you will need to keep and use your horn contact ring if you plan on replacing your wheel with a 94+ wheel. If your car is a 94, then the 94+ wheels are a direct bolt on.

The smallest OE wheel that is compatible is the C43/E55 wheel (R171 SLK32 wheel is the same, although some cosmetic differences are noticeable)

    Yes.

One item to note. The late W140 was available with anthracite interior as well as black. If you end up purchasing one of those remade steering wheels, chances are it is covered in anthracite leather, you can source a matching airbag from the W140.

    Hi Stefan,
I got a wood/leather wheel in my 500E that I might be willing to part with. There's some pics showing the steering wheel in my owner's thread on the Norwegian site
http://mbentusiastklubb.no/smf/index...3938#msg413938 Drop me a PM either here or on the Norwegian forum if you're interested.

I have one too that I would sell soon but shipping to Norway probably expensive. Getting a new one installed now but current one is a regular w124 sized wheel, basically in brand new condition and super nice, with wood that is a perfect match. only reason I am replacing is just personal preference for an all leather wheel

I have the "AMG performance steering wheel" option on my E420, it's a W124 option part. What to remember with wheels with smaller diameter as the one 2phast posted is that it can be hard to see the instrument cluster, depending on your height and seating position.

    Here's my wheel:

Yea, thats true. The sportline wheel does partially block your view of the speedo. It's worse with the E55 wheel. If we only had a tilt column!

Don't have my own pics but you can see it in the fs pics for my car by the prior owner, I bought it from this site here http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7869

In person the non sportline size actually still fits very well and doesn't feel like a big school bus wheel like I was worried about. I am swapping in an original 500e sportline wheel that I had refurbbed, and got perforated leather done on the side sections and added thumb rests. was less about sportline size for me and more about personal preference of wanting the perforated leather rather than wood and I got a used core sportline for refurbishment about as cheap as I coulda sourced a regular w124 wheel. The wood Wheel is thicker than appears in the pics. Car is in shop now but I should get it back next week and can take some more pics of the wheel from better angles out of the car to give you a sense

    Thanks

Is that a 400mm wheel? The correct E500E steering wheel should be 390mm regardless of model year.

Bag balm or leatherique fo sho

Noticed the pedals, good to add these or is it considered a "badge" issue?

Personally, after dealing with Leatherique, I would stay away from those ass clowns. Their leather conditioner also removes color from your seats. I have used most products on the market and none remove dye, so be careful.

I have had good luck with the product, but I don't get too rough with the removal process.

I've never had any issues with Leatherique (so far). Any chance the problem with dye removal was on seats that had been re-dyed by a previous owner?

Regardless - what leather products do you use for cleaning & treatment?

Good question, during installation I had checked it but I can only remember that it was not bigger in diameter than the original 39cm wheel.

The issue with this company is long drawn out story which goes way past just their leather treatment product removing dye. Regardless if its removing OE dye or aftermarket dye, it shouldn't. Griots does not remove any dye. Leatherique is the only one that has caused an issue.

This is a long story and I will try to summarize it here just for background.

Purchased leather care kit with dye. Requested Cream Beige. Provided pictures of cream beige, years it was in use etc. Explained the difference between cream beige and parchment and years used. Again, provided pictures showing the different colors, years used etc. Went way overboard explaining exactly what was needed.

Received leather care kit with dye. Leather conditioner removed existing dye on front seat.

Decided to test leather dye that was provided. Sure enough, they sent Parchment. Contacted the ass clowns, they proceeded to tell me I was wrong about cream beige vs. parchment and that my 1993 500e did indeed have parchment and not cream beige, so that is what they sent me. WTF? This was AFTER I sent detailed instructions and pictures explaining exactly what I wanted.

I then took a spare cream beige piece from my car, added a spot of their color to it, sent them pictures of it and finally boxed up their crappy dye and sent it and the test piece back to them.

More bullshit and then some more bullshit, then they said I would have to PAY to have the color fixed. I explained to them that they did not follow my instructions and provide me with cream beige as requested. The screw up was entirely their fault, but during the entire exchange, I was disrespected continually. They also refused to refund my payment for this kit and for some crack filler which I also ordered. I had to file a complaint with PayPal and finally received most of my money back (I did not send everything back unfortunately, just the dye). I should of sent their entire kit back to them.

Worst experience I have ever had with a company, total lack of professionalism, poor attitudes and inability to admit they were at fault. Their correct response to this situation should of been. "Oh, we made a mistake and sent you the wrong color, we will fix it and send you out the color you originally ordered at no charge"

AND, I didn't even get into the removal of the dye on the seat problem with them.

OUCH! I agree, their response was unacceptable. Sad to hear. Out of curiosity, how long ago did this happen?

I had great experience with http://www.carsdream.com

Price is based on what you want done. They can make the rim thicker, add wood trim...etc.

Bought a rebuilt sportline wheel from them. Finish is quite good although the wheel leather is in a more modern matt color soft black leather instead of the shinier leather that the seats have. (apparently is similar in texture and type as my friend's 964)

The original wheel that came with my car was a brabus wheel with really thick rim and wood that I did not find comfortable and original owner wanted it back for his other newly acquired car.

Awwww, nuts. I was hoping you were going to say this was many years ago. I vaguely remember them being a family business, I wonder if some different/younger family members are starting to take over from the original proprietors?

Anyway - I am not familiar with Griot's product line. What do you recommend for leather treatment & cleaning from them?

Yea, the frustration is still fresh. Not the way to run a business.

As for the leather conditioner, I have this

    http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...Picks&refType=

And my preferred leather conditioner is this one

    http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...Picks&refType=

I think this one is a solid choice for older leather. I wasn't getting the results I wanted from the first product, its not bad, but is probably geared towards newer cars/leather.

The only Griots product I had issue with was the glass cleaner, it seems to leave a film behind (not unlike Windex). So I use SprayAway instead.

I had the same issue with Leatherique over cream beige, they claim to know more than I did about the colors but bottom line is they didn't match.

I like the conditioners but Griots is great stuff too!

unfortunatley my steering wheel is such a bad quality..that the fitment straight up sucks..and makes it hard fitting the airbag..and makin the whole horn assembly stick...

so its beeing returned to the shop....hopefully.

What you have is a 98-99 steering wheel and yes, the internals are different than the earlier gen wheels and it does require a different airbag. Ran into this issue myself about five years ago. Hence its always best to know what year the wheel your buying came from, then you can match it up to a airbag from a similar model year. This difference may be present in other models, but I only ran into it with the W210 E class.

But it's not a Mercedes steering wheel ,it's RE manufactured ,,the hardware I have is 97,98,I really can't see why this is a year specific difference,as the holes in the airbag is a tad off

Yes, its re-manufactured but from a original Mercedes core, hence when you buy one of these, they add a "core charge" and request you return your original wheel. The change on the W210 E class (maybe others I don't know) was in 98. It looks like your new wheel is from a 98/99 and your trying to fit a horn assembly from a 92-97, that won't work, you need the horn assembly and airbag assembly out of a 98-99 steering wheel (W210 E-Class, I don't know about the others).

In the future, if you purchase a wheel, make sure it comes with the horn mounting assembly, then you only have to match up the airbag and those are relatively cheap and easy to find. The difficult part is determining what year the airbag is from, most sellers/wreckers will just say 92-99, as most don't know there was a design change in model year 98.

Sounds like you have not read my website 2phast.com/500e under interior, where I specifically mention this problem when I ran into it. My issue was the opposite of yours, my wheel was a 92-97 but arrived with no internals, so I bought a 98/99 W210 steering wheel/airbag and pulled the horn assembly and tried to use it in the 92-97 wheel and of course it didn't fit. I ended up getting the seller to provide me with a old 92 S Class wheel and used the horn assembly from that one.

But the core is not Mercedes either ? No Mercedes logo ,no numbers at all almost ,it's ordered as a 140 's class ,and I can't see why they would supply me with a 98,99 steering wheel ,when they know my car is 92,or anyways not newer than 96,97 like if itwas a 140,the steering wheel is bought through a company here in Norway ,so I have not dealt with the company which actually makes them

Of course the core is Mercedes, no one is going to build a new wheel, it would be way too expensive. These companies re-manufacture existing wheels. They add foam, shape it and then recover it in solid or perforated leather. When you buy one of these the company selling it requires a "core" deposit, something like $100, this is to make sure you send them your old steering wheel. When they get your old wheel back, they refund you your deposit. Then they take YOUR old wheel and build it into a new wheel and the process repeats. They make the assumption that you will take out your horn assembly and keep your airbag and use it in the new wheel. They are also supposed to send you a wheel that matches your year/model of car, but of course that does not always happen. It's easy to get these mixed up and keeping track of which year/model they came out of is no easy task. Many times customers will send back a different wheel (than what was on their car), so they buy a ugly $50 wheel off of EBay and send it in to get their core deposit back. Then they either keep their original wheel or sell it for allot more than $100 (or whatever their core deposit was). The wheel sent back gets labeled as being from a W210 98, 92 W140 or whatever, when in reality its from a completely different year/model of Mercedes. If the company doing the re-manufacturing isn't knowledgeable about every wheel/airbag change on every model Mercedes, then you can expect these problems to happen. It's also probably safe to assume whomever built the wheel does more than just Mercedes as well.

I figured you didn't buy the wheel from the company making them, so you managed to avoid the whole "core" deposit issue or they just added the cost of the core to the price of the wheel.

    Stefan,

You have probably been digging into this, and it's probably not relevant for the discussion, but FYI here is some info I picked up when getting my 2nd Victor st.wheel. My first Victor wheel was based on the early 124 core with an '94 airbag support, while the second wheel was a 210 core with an '96 airbag support.
(..I hope I haven't placed the images incorrect)

This was 5 years ago, but IIRC my airbag was sitting too high so I switched the airbag support to get it fit. I didn't return my older Victor wheel, but sold it after I refreshed the leather color.

    Thank you rick for info.
I was abit stressed out earlier..and abit "short" on my replies..but was on my phone..and abit more difficult writing good replies.

But now im on my computer.
I have also sorted me out with a steering wheel from a 2001 C class...and with a chrome star on the airbag.
So now..i hope this will fit..

IF that is correct what shows in the picture...which i reckon it does.....that picture to the left is the same as on my NEW steering wheel...then it all does not make sense what is beeing said in the posts above here.....then it actually seems that i could have a airbag from a standard w124...and it would fit?as the seating point is LOWER on the steering wheel pictured on the left....which is the same that goes for my new steering wheel ..NOW im confused

Even though...the biggest problem is not the difference in seating point...its the distance between the mounting holes in the airbag...which is like mentioned in the video...almost 1cm shorter on the NEW steering wheel..

Sure hope your not referring to a W203 airbag, W202 should work. I don't know if the W202 went through any of these updates like the W210 though, it was in production from 94-2000.

Even though...the biggest problem is not the difference in seating point...its the distance between the mounting holes in the airbag...which is like mentioned in the video...almost 1cm shorter on the NEW steering wheel..
This sounds like a different issue, as he was able to swap out the horn assembly and didn't have the fitment problem that you and I did. The date of 96 does not agree with what I have personally seen as the change over date for the new design on the W210 steering wheel. So it might be a new un-discussed incompatibility.

Holy shit. For 4000nok (500$) that steering wheel is bad quality. As you say, at least it should be an old wheel that has been redone but is not even that.

I bought a steering wheel from latvia on ebay. Superb work i have to say. It was a reused mb core. Only thing negativ i can say about it was that the leather was not black but graffiti gray (really gray almost black). A recoloring might have been in order if i had kept it. But i sold it because it was not a sportline and it had alcantara inlays at 9 and 3. Did not look right in the car. So i think i might in the future buy a full leather on from him one day. Or send mine to them if thats possible.

When buying any of these types of wheels you absolutely need to make sure the leather used is BLACK and not anthracite or any other derivative of black. Unless of course you don't mind dying the leather. If you don't pay attention, you end up with a mismatched wheel/airbag.

As stated the color was not perfect and needed dying to be perfect. Other than that the finish and quality was really good and i would not have any problem buying from them again.
