    Antenna options

I was just wondering, if anyone knows an alternative choice to replace the factory automatic antenna? Perhaps a fixed type (non movable). This is my second time replacing Hirschmann Antenna . At this time, I would prefer a non automatic one. Check the attach photos for references.

    Thanks

Make sure you treat the mast and they will last a long time. Hirschmann sells a wipe with alcohol and lubricant, GvZ & Co got the info on parts number I think.

Do not use 5-56, WD40 and the likes to "lubricate" the mast, it only attracts dirt and ruins the grease in the antenna motor gears. I usually run the antenna up after washing my car, and wipe it off with a cloth. If its dirty/greasy I make sure all of it comes off. Every now and then I use a Hirschmann wipe.

I never changes antenna masts nowadays, my last one is five years old now and running like a champ!

Agree! When you get a car of this vintage, change fuses clean and lube the innards of the Hirchmann ASAP. It's the first weekend project I do.

Last time, did you install a new one, or a used one? If it was new, how many years did it last? I'd be very surprised if a new one failed in a short time.

Also, since your car is Euro spec, is the antenna vertical or angled? USA models did not get the vertical type. I'm not sure if a fixed type is available.

Last time I replaced it new, was 3 years ago. Yeah the car is a Euro specs with angled type. I prefer a maintenance free antenna since I live in a dusty environment. I am willing to retrofit a fixed type. The photos above were taken from Russian forums.

Wow - I'm really surprised a new Hirschmann failed in 3 years. What was the failure? Electronic, or a problem with the mast?

A manual antenna is available from Mercedes/Hirschmann. When I bought my 500E a year ago it came with the manual antenna. (Because the Swede I bought it from didn't want to spend the extra dollars for the automatic ). I purchased the automatic Hirschmann and put the manual on my 190E.

    Unfortunately, it failed.

The problem is the mast attracting dirt and gunk which ruins the motor gears.

Can you post a link, or pass a part number for the manual antenna ?

The manual antenna is obviously not a 500E part, but I found it in the EPC using a 201 chassis number. The part number for the antenna is A202 820 1875. You will also need a mounting bracket with part number A201 820 3014. The antenna seal is the same for automatic and manual, at least it was on my car.

    Re: Antenna options

After a long search, decided to go with fixed type antenna, I found a plug and play option for our cars. All parts are genuine Mercedes parts:

    SLK R171 Antenna base Part# 171-820-03-75
    SLK R171 Short Antenna Mast # 171-820-17-75

I removed the Hirschmann antenna and i installed the above parts, i only used the Hirschmann SPLITER Part # (Ap 9016/11) to connect the radio cable with antenna.
The quality of radio reception as good as the old antenna.

    Re: Antenna options

I took apart and cleaned/lubed both models on the C126/E500. They are due to be inspected again in the fall. The C126 is about the size of a 3 year old sticking out straight of the side of the car. At least the 036 is shorter and angled for speed
