Removal of the forward / small mounts can be a nightmare. Sometimes they pop right out, other times you spend hours chiseling the outer shell. Installation is the easy part! Use sliding fluid, you may need to let them sit pressed in place with the tool so they don't slide back out a little. These can be R&R'd without the special tool, but the tools do help. Most aftermarket tools are NLA now (might still be able to get the Klann?), and the MB tool was crazy expensive last I checked. Check out this PDF file for a "how-to" without the fancy tools.

    Re: OWNER - JC220

Thanks Dave- that PDF is very good. I have changed w124 subframe mounts before without any of the special tools but it involved a big hammer! The front MB tool is still available but pricy at around £135. I may skip the front tool.

Not E500E related but tonight I serviced one of the newer Benzes we have. I guess a 4 banger Diesel stick shift is not something our USA members will see very often. All MB filters and Oil except for the Fuel Filter where I got Mahle.

    IMG_4586.JPG

Because they have what I'm told is a heater on top - these fuel filters are £73 - almost $100 USD for the one Filter! MB quoted around £105 for that filter which I found very odd since that exact filter (less heater / sensor bit) is around £12 for my 2007 E220CDI daily driver.

    IMG_4585.JPG

    Some other brief observations-

ECU mounted on top of Air cleaner housing - using the Air flow as cooling for it.

    IMG_4583.JPG IMG_4587.JPG

Almost everything is plastic including the air filter housing & cam covers for example. Plus the camshaft ends appear to float unsupported

    IMG_4588.JPG

And a split in a Intercooler pipe - which hasnt blown yet but a new one is ordered now

    IMG_4589.JPG

Using the oil extractor the service was done in under an hour so I can't complain. I need to adjust the parking brake now also since a local garage (repair under warranty) actually made it way worse. Goes to the floor. I think they have no clue how a MB parking brake is set up - it's even got all new shoes & rotors fitted by them but USED pads put back in which angered me somewhat - who puts used brake pads onto new rotors!? Anyway - a Brake fluid moisture check / renewal etc this weekend will finish it up.

Wow, you can get the OE MB tool that cheap? On this side of the pond, 201-589-10-43-00 is ~$325 USD or so!

    Damn you 500E Board

In other news I have a vast amount of w124 spares (And w202 AMG) some of which I will be selling off very shortly. This will include at least one NLA E500E Spare. I haven’t room to stand in my garage anymore there is so much stuff so needs must. (When you have 3 Engines in your garage attic enough is enough )

All items will be sorted, catalogued & photos added on 500E Board within 1 week.

    Re: OWNER - JC220

In an unexpected turn of events – I bought another w124! A friend sent me a link to one that appeared on Facebook for silly cheap so I jumped in my car right away & headed to see it – 1 hour away.

It’s a facelift ‘1998’ E220 Manual transmission car with 91k Miles – which do look genuine to me when looking over the car. Starts, runs drives OK but with a blowing exhaust. As I said it was silly cheap so couldn’t resist! The seller says it’s a 1998 – and so do parts sites when I look up the reg. I’ll check more into that when I get it home but it’s more likely a last of the run 1997 (Edit- oops - 1995 more likely!!) year cars that was first registered in 1998.

When I get it home I’ll get a good look underneath it to see what to do. With the low miles, manual transmission & black colour I may just leave it in one piece for now if there is no serious corrosion underneath. For now I'm considering it a parts car until I see underneath it properly I won't be insuring it or making it road legal - so it can just sit until I decide what to do with it.....

OK before I did a quick google before and mis read Wikipedia - it says 1997 for coupe last production years but 1995 for saloons? I assumed it was a 1995 myself until he said about the 1998 first registration date - very odd.

When I get it home I'll run the VIN in Star & see what the datacard gives as production date - I'm guessing 1995!

It's probably the registry date that confuses the online shops. When you run the VIN you'll find out that it is a 94 or a 95 me thinks!

    It looks nice enough though!

    Re: OWNER - JC220

So tonight we went to collect the E220. Fitted a new battery & it fired right up. Everything works & it drove flawlessly for 1.5 hours after being off the road for approx 3 years!

Its dark & pouring out of the heavens outside so I can't really take a look around it since I got it home. What I did notice was a 'Made in India' Mercedes plaque on the slam panel. And the owner said the car has 61k mile approx not 91k. It was a km/hr speedo that had to be changed out for MPH to pass our MOT. So it's a '1998' made in India import..... bizarre. I'll run the VIN in the morning. I did see this thread which might explain this car-

    Re: OWNER - JC220

Just ran out to take a look - this is the weird VIN- (Never seen this before)

    IMG_4649.JPG
Just noticed even the A/C & Central locking works perfect.... drive away for 220 quid. Unbelievable especially if the low 60K Mile history checks out.

My Star is not charged - does anyone care to pull the datacard for VIN WDB1240226C285927. Curious about this car now

Cool, thanks Dave. It's a August 1998 with one previous owner going by the V5 document. The heat insulating glass, under guard & additional parts for vehicles in hot countries are quite rare options? I also failed to notice its a 199 Pearl Black car too I guess kind of obvious but I've had all of 5 minutes between looking over it when buying & getting it home in the lashing rain tonight.

If there is no serious rust I think I'll keep this one! Pics to follow in the coming days. It's no E500E but I kind of like this E220 all the same

    Re: OWNER - JC220

So this is it in all it’s horrible glory. For a car that has sat for 3 years it’s not bad. It needs a total mega clean up though. Everything about it screams low mileage in terms of how all the wood, glass & even many small things like how easy the driver’s door key works – like brand new.

Joining the dots up now a bit better I believe only the MPH faceplate was swapped out for it to pass the (last) MOT in 2013. Thus the odometer reading (Then 62829) and now 91304 is actually KM reading. If this checks out (Which I am doing) that could mean it has 56,500 miles on it! There are various logical reasons why I make this statement and at this moment & time I believe it to be the case.

Taking it to a friends lift shortly to do a proper inspection on it for rust. If no serious rust is found it’s going to be another resto. So far looking underneath from ground level it looks damn good.

Very lucky on this car - not what I expected at all

Got my Millar tools from USA! For w124 Diff bushing & rear later type subframe mounts R&R.

Been doing more inspections on the India W124. It's great in most places but makes up for it in the rear underbody / fenderwells & spare wheel tub. Have lots of pics of the rust etc but not sure if I should keep posting E220 stuff on 500E board

Well I would try to not make this become 'Owner E220'

By limiting the posts on it and keeping regular updates on the 500E. I have 4x w124's (E36, E220, 300E-24 & 500E) so with the 500E in a good place now I'm likely going to concentrate on the other cars for a bit with only minor jobs / upgrades on the 500E.

If the 500E mods are cool I'll post all things W124 that might be of interest to members here

    Re: OWNER - JC220

There are W124 models other than the E500E, 400E/E420 and 300E/E320? Seriously?

Generally speaking, anything relating to wheeled vehicles is FINE for this forum, as long as it is posted in the OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSIONS sub-forum. Occasionally non-car stuff is posted and that is fine -- occasionally. Most anything to do with the W124 chassis is fine in OFF-TOPIC; there is a special place for 400E-specific discussions.

We strongly discourage political/religious/antifa/BLM/white-supremacist/Brexit discussions on this forum. There is one member who goes by "500Eboard" with a Trump avatar who is on the hairy edge of getting banned.

Egregious & over-zealous Benzworld denizens (particularly from the 126 forum there) are always at risk of being -- and have been -- banned here. "Bondavi" from Benzworld 126 forum and all related sock-puppet accounts he has here, when discovered, is ALWAYS banned.

If you own a 500E and have an "OWNER" thread in that sub-forum, you should put any udpates to your other non-E500E cars in your OWNER thread. If you have a 400E/E420, you can have an "OWNER" thread in that sub-forum, however, you must put the model of your car in parenthesis after your name ... so the format would be "OWNER - GSXR (E420)" for example.

If you do not have a 500E, any OWNER thread should always be in OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSIONS.

Thankyou for the clarification Gerry. I will continue to post my W124’s shenanigans in my owner’s thread. I am a self confessed serial w124 restorer so there is always something being worked on. Currently the E220 is very rusty...... but borderline repairable. I sense another project coming on – but it’s all good. Indeed I may do a ‘W124 Rust finding – how to’ on here on the back of the E220 findings. I have learned all w124 places for rust living in Ireland & onto my 4th W124 resto

Full disclosure – I am a member of Benzworld too! But don’t really post very often only from time to time. I find many of the regular / daily members can be very rude / argumentative and attacking for no reason at all. I can’t be bothered with that ‘drama’ as I constantly see threads going down the pan in very unprofessional fashion with zero moderation. Conversely 500E board is a very well ran forum, everyone is genuine and helpful. Hence I will happily detail my w124 projects on here! It’s nice also to have a ‘journal’ to look back over from time to time even from my own point of view.

Is this having something to do with Prince Philip's quote in Scotland, "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the [driving] test?"

That's what they all say (281lxm included) But I see daily posts when I check in over there on occasion.

I don't drink before driving them but they 'drive' me to it instead

I have no current or recent project journals on Benzworld. But I do post daily on occasion- other times not for weeks on end. I try to help people where I can and not get involved in the regular fisticuffs that occur.

As for for the E220 I'll post an update next week when I'm fully done checking for rust. It won't be a full blown resto by any means (it doesn't warrant that!) But I need to first make it solid underneath so it doesn't get any worse. It'll make a nice weekend driver next year all being well. I do have an idea that in a couple years after I have the E36 complete I may do a Superturbo om606 swap on the E220 - keeping the manual transmission. That will make it a little more exciting - the 4pot is somewhat underwhelming but the condition of the car is so good in all other ways (besides aforementioned rust) I don't want to scrap it either ......

On doing more rust inspection on the E220 I’ve came to the conclusion she’s a parts car sadly. Shame really but it needs too much welding underneath to make solid. Some areas are good but the boot floor and above the subframe are very rotton. Someone has also bodged some repairs in the past so I'd have to unravel that also.

Although I could - I know it’s not economical to repair it.

On a plus side – it’s about the best parts car I’ve ever had! Every clip & trim will be removed and catalogued for my spares collection – nothing wasted. All bits including the doors and claddings are good as new also. All 3x locks work flawless with the 3x keys supplied so the handles and locks will be going on the E36 for example since it’s originals are shot. I’ll also facelift the E36 with the perfect headlamps and bonnet. (The E36 just needs paint to finish)

Needs must. For now it can sit as I build more garage storage in the form of a carport

So the C36 left with little dignity today – although I did put the hood star up for it’s final voyage

It gave it’s life for my w124 200 - now E36 (Which has all of the C36 running gear installed into, Auto gearbox & shifter, ABS brake system, rear brake callipers, entire Wiring Harness and ECU’s and the 3.6 Motor) This C36 was very rusty underneath so wasn’t worth restoring. It was the perfect donor though being a flip key non ASR car.

It was lifted and crushed this morning – let’s have a moments silence for the AMG gods!

    Re: OWNER - JC220

Well I’ve got rid of the C36 and demoted the Indian 124 as a parts car – this got me thinking...... I have space again!! (Not really)

So tomorrow I am going to view a 1994 320CE Coupe in Azurite Metallic & Mushroom leather (One of my favourite combos) I know the car had eco junk issues and was dry stored the past 5 years because of that. The owner says it has no visible rust on the bodywork so fingers crossed. It sounds like a well optioned car which is what I am after. (I have passed on 2x other CE's lately as they were 4 cylinder with cloth interiors)

I’m going to view it tomorrow night and put a deposit on it all being well. I’ll get the VIN off it first and start the search for a good used / updated wiring harness & possibly ETA too.

I’m building a carport and re-shuffling my fleet but there will be some very good 124 updates in the coming months so stay tuned! I’m clearing the way now to start bodywork on the E36 and try to get it finished by next spring. Plus the CE will hopefully be some tidying / light restoration work and get it back on the road.

Attached are pics the vendor sent me from his phone

    Re: OWNER - JC220

So I bought the 320CE Coupe! It has rust though as can be expected but is a nice original car all the same inside & out. 111k miles with no paint corrosion - but the usual holed jacking points etc. I got under it as best I could and believe it to be restorable. It's got lots of good points; Like its on 4x genuine 17 AMG alloys with new tyres - and no de-lamination to either to front or rear screens - rare in a coupe! Also some bad points - which I can address with some TLC.

Much more info to come on it this weekend when I trailer it home. It is a true 'Barn Find' I guess...... It will be a resto this one – but I do really like the car and felt sorry for it as it has been in a shed for 5 years and a total shame to see.

I guess these would kind of suit it. These are basic Euro 124 hubcaps obviously people still want em though so they'll be of use to somebody

This is the coupe VIN decoder-

    https://www.datamb.com/vin/lNmJWG2pRDldxnkB7

Its a 4 speed - Sportline. Had no idea it was a sportline as the badges are obviously missing on it...... need to find some of those!

Got the E320C home today – it washed up great for a car that has been sat in a shed for 5 years! Bought as a non runner - for restoration. First mission is to get it running – then prep for MOT after repairing some of the usual jacking point rust etc. But it is a great, complete original car and I really like it!

Restoring it stock apart from an AMG kit as one of the last jobs to do hopefully – this is the inspiration

    IMG_4869.JPG

Also picked up some R129 / E500 replica wheels. Staggered 18’s with 10 inch rears. Come spring I’ll have them pro refurbished with a diamond cut lip, fit new tyres and use them as a second set of wheels for the 500E.

Work on the Coupe starts tomorrow in the AM - can't wait to get started at it!

I guess there is a first for everything- 4 different plugs in a 6 cylinder engine! I mean- WTF

But otherwise the engine is very clean inside and turns easily by wrench. Going to replace the engine harness, put some fresh fuel in it, new ignition leads, spark plugs, water pump, belt, tensioner, battery and see if it'll fire.

Great looking coupe, I have a soft spot for them, and that's one of the best colors around. My wife's 129 has a similar color combo, puts the 199's to shame, (just my opinion for the 199 lovers).

Good luck with it, and like the rest of your restores, looking forward to your future posts... O

Hi Oscar, many thanks for the encouragement Glad you like it. I agree the Azurite is one of the best colours in particular for the coupe's. There has been a Azurite CE in a wrecking yard for years now and I often looked at it thinking - wow that would have been a great looking car.

I had an advert out for buying 124 Mercedes - as parts cars or otherwise. The seller seen my add and phoned me about his coupe which he had locked away for 5 years and didn't know what to do with it. (He had never advertised the car for sale himself) When I heard it was a 320 in my favourite colour AND with cream leather I went to see it like a rocket! So in a way the car found me. When I ran the VIN it was great to see it was also a 4 Speed auto and Sportline steering box / suspension.

I also recently promised some DIY's. Namely the Sunroof and Headlamp aim. This CE will now be the perfect test mule for that so the DIY's will be forthcoming. They take time to do properly and I don't want to hash something together either so hopefully in the coming weeks I'll get to all that.

Lots of work ahead on the coupe too but that's OK. I have a healthy budget allocated for it to bring it up to snuff - I feel the car is well worth the investment

    Re: OWNER - JC220

So with more inspection under the car its bad and good news. Bad news is there is rust under the headlamps pretty good and it's done very well on its rear left inner fender tub. 124 637 01 60 is NLA unfortunately so the hunt begins for a donor coupe to cut these particular areas from.

A front spring is broken and the suspension and rear subframe is quite rusty. All Fuel & brake lines are rusty too. It does have 4x new genuine brake discs though!

The good news is this is now a full nut & bolt resto starting immediately. I want this thing rolling out of my garage next spring better than new underneath inc Stainless hoses, kunifer brake and fuel lines, galvanised subframe etc. It appears the rear subframe is interchangeable with the saloon models (PN 124 350 75 08) this is good as I have a good spare from a saloon ready to get blasted and galvanised now.

Then new H&R suspension kit will be installed along with new wheels & tyres etc. 100% new underneath is the plan.

For your Indian 220, just some info (if not known yet) : it has mentioned CKD in the data card. This means "completely knocked down", this vehicle is basically produced in the (German) factory, then shipped like a kit car to India and there put together. This was and still is done in some countries due to import taxation.... There is also partly knocked down vehicles which have for example only the engine and transmission missing...

I wimp out and drive an MCV (as defined by nocfn) on a daily basis to spare my 124!

Yes I do have a bad case of w124 OCD - It’s getting worse too as time goes on! The thought of one being in my garage with any rust at all is unbearable Glad you like the Coupe!

Thanks Stephen – yes lots more to come on this Coupe. Almost like the E36 build all over again. Which reminds me – it still needs finished too

Thankyou for the suggestion – that was a Kit I was looking at. The car has 2x brand new springs on the rear but one broken front spring and original looking shocks all around (no leaks). It seems like my best option is to just buy a whole suspension kit rather than 2x front springs + shocks separately.

Thanks for the comments on the Coupe – it is a nice old machine and not something you see very often (At least in Ireland there are very few Coupes at all). Genuinely – If I were ordering one back in the day this would have been it! Coil packs are a bonus too – no more cap & rotor woes. Finding a car with a complete interior and trim is becoming increasingly important as the NLA list continues to grow. I can deal with the few areas of rust - with belts and braces approach! Hot dip galvanised 1.2mm steel is ordered for me to fabricate my repair sections from.

Yes I figured there was some Tax gain behind sending the Indian car out as a Kit. It makes sense that it may have only meant the engine & trans were shipped separate. There was a dealer in East London who specialised in bringing these in and I believe that’s just how it was brought in new. It is a shame to part it out but it’s just too far gone to save unfortunately. I had high hopes of driving it - those faded fast when I got under it with a screwdriver. It will provide many great bits for the fleet though – I have all the parts allocated in my head already to the betterment of my 124 fleet

Partway through the very first part replacement on the 320CE. The original pump did free up on it’s own & still looked serviceable inside – but new pump it is!

I have a question for anyone who owns a C124 Coupe re: the belt presenters.

Do they wait for ignition input before extending? Ie; must you put the key in the ignition and turn it in order for them to extend out after getting into the car?

Currently hooking the battery on and simply opening / shutting the doors is doing nothing to make them work. I am loathe to turn the ignition key all the way on until I have the replacement engine harness fitted back on. It would be good to know if there is any hope they may still be operational.

I have a Cabrio but I believe they work the same.
My presenter comes out when you turn the key to the first position.

Bogeyman, Thankyou for the reply. Position 1 on the key didn't seem to do anything so I went ahead to 2 and both presenters worked 100%!

Sunroof etc works only things that don't are the power antenna and both rear windows. Need to figure out how to coax the rear windows back to life. I'm quite sure it's lack of use that has them stuck
