MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

There are two MB "pastes" that have a special place in my heart.

The first is the now-infamous MB "Gleitpaste" - the 'sliding paste' for the sunroof mechanism.

    This is "da Gleit..."

The second is much lesser known - it's called MB "Silikonpaste" and it's an excellent lubricant for a number of operations. The part number for the Silicone Paste is 000 989 84 51, current MB list price of $72 for a 3.5-ounce jar.

This silicone paste is special stuff because it's the secret sauce that the "stealership weasels" use to eliminate squeaks, rattles and other noises from door cards, seals, seats, metal parts, and so forth. It is excellent for use on door strikers and pins, hinges and lube points. Some call it "Wunderpaste" and although pricey stuff, it is well worth the cost.

Any customer car that comes into an MB stealership service bay because of a complaint of squeaks and rattles ... gets a good dose of this Wunderpaste.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Re: MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

Pretty much every second or third stealership "tech" workstation has a jar or two of this paste open with a brush stuck in the top of it.

I'm sure Clank will fill us in when they see this....it's a very important 989 in the fight to remedy customer complaints!

The attached photos are actual **real** paste containers located on the workstations of MB factory-trained technicians located deep in the depths bowels of an actual, real-life, working MB "Stealership."

Would also like to hear from Jono if there is an aftermarket equivalent available at greatly reduced pricing, for us cheapskates...

    That stuff!
Most of us got familiar with that stuff due to one job. Due to some kind of production variation issue, new 126 cars were developing a wicked creak in the front end at high ambient/bodywork temperatures, over large slow displacements like speed bumps. The fix was to remove the upper control arms, pop out the rubber bushings, liberally lubricate the flanges on the bushings and the control arms where the bushings contacted the control arms with that paste, and put the bushings back into the control arms with an additional super thin plastic shim that rested between the contact flanges of the bushings and the control arms.
We've used it on just about everything else since then, and I have to guess that's why they never stopped making it. I think it is also the intended assembly lubrication for the inside of swaybar bushings, and things like that. It provides slip with the stamina...

There is a 3M Silicone Paste that retails for under $25 a container....

Trust me, it's not the same as the MB stuff....

this kind of stuff we stick w/ the Genuine. Pricey, yea..but here @ least we use it up eventually! I suspect that this would be a lifetimes supply a few times over for the more normal-ish types.

Thanks, guys! You are helping me deplete my retirement account. Guess I'll have to pick up a bottle so I can keep up with the Honchos.

I actually have the 3M paste. That is a dielectric grease which can be used on ignition wire boots to ease installation / removal, keep moisture out, yadda x3. I almost never use it, but the 3M bottle is cheaper per ounce than most of the other vendors' smaller tubes.

Guys – I have very troubling news. I attempted to order a bottle of the MB silicone Paste PN A0009898451 from my main dealer only to be told it is NLA

Is there a replacement MB grease for this?

Guys: How about this NAPA product--Sil-Glyde. Part BK 7651351. I used it when installing new rear wheel carrier joints.

gleitpaste NLA? I have a tub of it. I would not use Syl-glyde where the manual calls for gleitpaste.

Silicon paste is very different than Gleitpaste for sunroofs.

Syl-glide from NAPA is an excellent all-purpose lube and another that I highly recommend.

Not Gleitpaste! But the small MB bottle of silicone potion for interior squeaks & groans

I don't love near a Napa so I'll need to find a Silicone paste of sorts in UK / Ireland. I was hoping to use the MB stuff on a super annoying squeak from my 500E belt buckle.

Silicone Paste is NOT NOT NOT NOT Gleitpaste!!! They are NOT the same thing.

Gleitpaste will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER become NLA.

I've always used silicone from a dive store. Tell them you need some lube for your dry suit zipper.

3m and other comanies, smaller sizes and way less than mb.

Gerry, you know what they say about never ever, lol.

My apologies for the bunny trail, I did not catch that Joe was referring to a different goop going NLA. I saw the thread title plus a new post with "NLA" and jumped to wrong conclusions without comparing part numbers. I will commit seppuku immediately.

So, uh, anyone know of an aftermarket equivalent for the now-NLA anti-squeak stuff? (We should probably split these posts into a different thread, no?)

Ugh, WTF is this all about. Arrived here after realizing I need to hump the sunroofs of my cars with Gleitpaste, three in the household, soon to be four if I get the kid and MB, and is it wrong to lube up my Porsche 964s sunroofs with this stuff. Thats 5, possibly six lube jobs. Another post said you are not a man unless you have the 100 gallon drum of 001-989-46-51 in your garage.

thank goodness Silicone Paste 000 989 84 51 is gone forever so I don't have to try and track that down

Indeed, real Benz enthusiasts tend to have a full tub o' da Gleit on their shop supplies/chemical shelves. It separates the men from the Banzworld types

Klink what is magical about the white silicone grease? I'm sure I can match it... send me a sample ~ 1/2 ounce or something in a small parts ziplok.

How about Dow Corning, 112 Moisture-Resistant Grease, 5.3 oz. Tube? $21/tube from mcmastercarr.com More washout resistant than plan silicone grease.

Gleitpaste will be ordered soon. I am also in the middle of a Porsche 964 rear spoiler gear mechanism rebuild. What grease to use here?

I was planning on order some White Lithium Grease NLGI

Re: MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

Gleitpaste is intended for sliding surfaces, specifically sunroof rails, although it can be used for other purposes. I think it would work fine for a rear spoiler raising/lowering mechanism, though personally I would probably use NAPA Syl-Glyde or Lubriplate white grease. Syl-Glyde is an excellent all-around lubricant, and I use it for many things, including windshield wiper mechanisms, and so forth. Available at any NAPA Auto Parts store, or Amazon, or FleaBay.

You're getting a tub of Gleitpaste? See folks, this is exactly how the sickness spreads. First a 500E, then an SEC, now almost fully down the rabbit hole with a big ol' Gleitpaste purchase. Next up is a spare parts car to dismantle for NLA parts.......and semi-monthly trips to the local pick'n'pull yards in the Bay Area

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Re: MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

Can you MB gurus check if my intel on Gleitpaste is correct?
Gleitpaste = PFPE based fluorinated lubricant (not PTFE)
Equivalents as per my internet research:
DuPont Krytox 8904 or 8906 (this is probably an overkill)
DuPont Finish Line extreme fluoro - bike grease, here in EU costs approx. 10 EUR per 20g tube
TASC SP1 - this can be snatched on eBay.uk for around GBP 5 for small syringe

Just my $0.02. Am I banned now???

I have a full case of 500eboard-itis then. Yesterday, I looked up on eBay for a metric tool sets to go to Pick-n-pulls prepared. They have China special tool sets for 80 bucks in a roller carry on case that have what I need to attack W124 and W126 junkers. Looks perfect to throw into the back of my truck on my way to a junkyard. So I am well inside the rabbit hole about to hit bottom. Sil-glyde in my Amazon cart.

Re: MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

My wrecking yard toolkit I carry in a hand-held valise bag that I got as a freebie at a conference. Basically it's a foam laptop case (you could fit a notebook binder or thick laptop in it no problem) with two handles. I carry enough tools to do about 80% of jobs, plus a couple of shop rags and 2-3 pairs of nitrile gloves for when I rip them.

And a can of non-California chlorinated brake cleaner in the trunk of my car, to clean up once back at the car.

Ricardo, just stick to the basics for now.....Gleitpaste and Syl-Glyde are good baseline lubes to have. Augment it with a good case of brake cleaner, and a 5mm swivel hex wrench to get your M119 valve cover off if needed....and you're probably good for now.

Other than a crank bolt, I've yet to encounter a fastener in my routine Benz fixing that has required a mega-torque impact wrench, etc. Let alone at a wrecking yard. They're just trying to out-blow each other. "My impact wrench is bigger/has more torque than yours!"

I use kids Highschool backpack to carry tools, gloves, brakeclean, bags and then another heavy canvas bag for parts which if I am far away and heavy, I zip tie to the back pack to walk out hands free.

Re: MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

Great idea on the back pack. I have a Milwaukee tool bag + something like this:
    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-129-...-Case/50200789

But mine has a wrench sets too.

I ussually take a tuperware box if I am harvesting something internal to keep it clean. Roll of paper towels and some ziplock bags. There are lots of things I want to avoid getting scratched up.

I think you take what you need- depends on the target. If I'm pulling a 034 fan clutch it's different need than an instrument panel in a W124 or tail lights or cans modules. Oil tubes are mega easy w an impact. Had one NY car which was a bugger... rusty and the allens were all partially stripped or siezed. Had to drill out a dozen or so heads.

Re: MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

000 989 84 51 MB Silicone Paste aka "Silikonpaste" "Wunderpaste" "Magic lubricant" in 3.5-ounce (100g) jar is still available here @ $75 plus shipping:
    http://www.fourbyfourclub.com/W463To...iconePaste.htm

Just purchased and received a bottle. Not sure how "old" this batch may be but must be the last few still available on this vendor's shelf. As mentioned above, this magic lub is NLA from MB dealerships.

    Another interesting item:
    http://www.fourbyfourclub.com/W463Tools/W463Glue.htm
MB "Special Adhesive" described as "Original Mercedes glue/adhesive designed to fix sagging headliners, loose under hood insulations or any other flexible parts as rubber door seals and gaskets"
Has anybody used this adhesive or know the part number?

Re: MB Silicon Paste - the Holy Grail

This paste is the shizz, fo sho. Everyone should have a jar in their shop.

I have a can of the special adhesive, but haven't used it yet. I'm intending to use it to re-glue the door pocket skins and see how they adhere.

For hood pads, door seals and the like, I use the 3M Super Trim Adhesive (it's discussed in other threads here) and would probably use the same for other uses.

When I do get around to re-gluing my door pockets with the Special Adhesive from MB, I'll report back to the thread I started on it long ago.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Do you have the part number for this MB special adhesive? $39 I assume is the list price.
