My co-worker showed up with his 94 Lotus Esprit and I fell in love with it. It is red with upgraded wheels and exhaust. It is one sexy looking car. I was happy with my 500 until I saw this beauty... Anyone have any tidbits of info about these cars. I am sure the English engineering can not compare to German but it is a hot car. I sat in it and it was very cramped however - the pedals are so close together... I may need one!!

There is absolutely no comparison in the build quality and materials of a Lotus vs. a 124 Mercedes. They are cool looking cars but temperamental and costly to maintain, as they are a true "exotic" car. And I do know that Lotus parts aren't cheap either !!

Cheers,
Gerry

A couple of friends were unfortunate enough to purchase these cars. It's a typical British car, not quite as bad as a MG but pretty close.

Just like notions of a really, really good lookin' gal, one long distance ride will probably change your mind.

Reference info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Esprit

There's one that comes by here every summer. The exotic pedigree makes it enticing, but your comfort range will be quite limited if you are over six feet tall. Go cruising for a day with your friend. See if you can get some time behind the wheel, too. At the end of the day I think you'll love your 500 all over again. :sex:

Yea, no..I wouldn't keep it around for a daily cruiser/every day car.. but, for a sunday runner/back road burner, Yea Please. I'm 6'2 and I didn't mind levering myself into the car.
Had the pleasure of going out on Road Atlanta w/ her fully prepped w/ R spec rubber...makes the Benz looks like a early 80's cadillac when it comes to corners.

I'd own one bank account and space permitting...having spent the time I have thus far I must say I Understand the appeal.

What still baffles me is the fact that UK was always proud of their engineering feats elsewhere, but their cars (to this day) are sad examples. I just donít get itÖ:banger:

Yes, those "engineering feats" conversations seem to always digress to the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine for some reason

Blegh. I wouldn't touch a Lotus from that era. Maybe a modern one, I don't know how they are nowadays, but definitely avoid one from the '90's. Terrible quality.

O.K. thanks folks - I think the Lotus is out of my system... for now :).

But now I am thinking of a 04 C55 AMG Supercharged 493 HP S Class 4dr... I am thinking about maybe more luxury and comfort. Any impressions on this car - does it have any major repair issues to look for? There are a few out there with under 100k at around the 20k price range. Any years better than others? I love my 500 but it might be time for a change - in which case I will have to put it up for sale...

thanks!

IIWY, I'd get a recent-model C63 AMG if you're going to go that route. That being said, I don't know if you'll get much info from folks here with regard to the newer cars.

Yeah. As far as I'm concerned, the last cars Mercedes built were the 124, 129, and 140 chassis. Maybe a couple of AMG 202's and 210's. The newer stuff might get my attention when the prices fall enough to get >500hp for <$10k.

There are varying viewpoints on what the "last 'real' Mercedes" was. Some say the 124, some say the 123, 126. One of my old mechanics in Portland said it was the 114 (240D) because you couldn't kill them except for rust !! I think it's the 124/126 generation, myself.

IMHO 2004 MBs were still in that questionable quality era. I think it's only been the past 3-4 years that MB quality has started to come back up.

Ok tnks folks - yes I know how these W124s are built - I have had 3 of them. I do all the work myself so I know how they are made and appreciate the quality. I am just getting kinda itchy for a change and want more room and luxury. Plus I am getting frustrated with not being able to drive my 500 FAST anywhere - 0-60 and your done - what fun is that! I think I will go out and drive a newer one to see how I like it...

I've been doing some research on the 2003 -2006 W215 CL 55 / CL600 myself, lots of car for the money if you don't need a 4 door. I miss the E500 for sure, theirs just so many cars and so little time !!!

Now if I could just get my hands on a W124 E60 life would be perfect yes

I picked up an 06 S500 AMG Sport package and kinda love the car... It is not nearly as fun as the E500, but much more luxuirous. It does not cause you to want to drive it fast - just enjoy the ride. It has air suspension and the ride is incredible... I would never have wanted to sell my E500 but was forced to (long story). Now that I did I can appreciate the 12 years of refinement. I still have an W124 E320 and after being in the 06 W220 your perception of the W124 really changes.. If garage space allows I will one day like to have an E500 again - this time black on black... tnks to all for the help and entertainment on 500eboard..

Josey, did you just recently sell your E500? What color was it? I don't recall seeing it for sale (unless you traded it in)...

I had it for sale a few times via craigs and also listed it on this forum... took a bit to sell. It had hail damage if u looked closely - I sold it for 6k as it had a shift flare 2-3 and was prob due for a few other things. The new S500 is nice for sure but is a bit numb behind the wheel - but I appreciate the ride. I was looking for an S55 but how often would you get to use all that HP... plus the gas mileage :(

Oh damn. I found the forum listing (click here (http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?1683-FS-1994-E500-Silver-Black-140kmi-7-500-DC-area))... had totally forgotten about it. $6k? Ack, don't tell me stuff like that!! Maybe the new owner will show up on the forum?
