I picked this up a few weeks ago ... a 330,000km 1992 500E in Bornite Metallic two-tone with black heated electric-memory seats.

Pretty good condition except for a few rust bits that I'm having sorted out and a new grill / headlamp washers that I need to fit. Since I picked it up I've fixed some cracks in the Walnut centre console (superglued the cracks and polished out!) and fitted a new aerial.

I will never grow tired of seeing another set of pictures of a "new" car. Wonderful. And with extra buttons on the centre-console?

One bit of bad news, though. Your profile indicates you're 25. Although I congratulate you with obtaining such a wonderful machine at that age, I hope you do realize you're spoiled for life, right? No matter what car you'll hop into, you'll always compare it to this one -- and it'll win.

Again, congrats!

Oh wow. Bornite with black... one of my absolute favorite color combos. VERY rare, I've never actually seen photos of a car with this combo. Gorgeous...

That was a good looking 500! :-) And I've never seen the two-tone Bornite. It looks great with black impact strips and amber corners.

It is nice to see younger people care for the 124.036, and the UK members are increasing, that's nice.

Cheers

Welcome, looks a straight car, do you know where it was imported into the UK from? or is it one of the very few dealer special order cars

No blinker repeater on the fender, so maybe it was imported to the UK...? Also has speedo in km's instead of miles.

Nice 500, I must do the *face down* to my car, mine is exactly the same, also w o fenderblinker IMO they look
so sweet w that untouched fenderline. Unusual colorcombo? mine and two fellow 500 owners are exactly like this.

BUT...you have to correct the 500E embleme positioning!

Hello

Very nice color combo and scenry.
BTW when i was recently at my local mb dealer, parts guy told me that there is still an oportunity to buy UK market front lenses for 500E. I was intrested in regular ones but those were NLA.
And its a first time i see IR central locking on prefacelifted car :) very nice options you have there

Maybe it's just a USA thing. There are very, very few Bornite W124's in the USA. I only know of one or two and they always have cream interior, not black.

:(

Yes, definitely imported at some point. Official uk cars have side repeaters and speedo in miles.

@Barrington, guys here will pick up on small things, man. All in good name of our beloved cars.

As far as I know lens' for 500E are still available. Guys here perhaps can confirm this? Yes, I thought the IR only became available on post 94 models too.

Hawkeyed see and tell, thats odd, YOU sure it's not a *facelift off* '94, better look at the motor too, what extra buttons are we seeing?
Are you seriously saying he should cut the frontwings to mount sidemarkers? Don't do.

No! If it passes the uk annual inspection, then I would not bother. It all depends where you go for the test, some testers may pick it up, some won't . In the case of the OP obviously it hasn't been a problem. Whereas mine had to be cut (annoyingly) as the tester was quite thorough.

MY car passed MOT but has no side repeaters, the headlights on mine are not correct 500E either. The part no off of the R right headlight is Bosch f 305 621 807 965 081 124 820 5466.
The part no. off the L left headlight is Automotive lighting Czech Republic 1 305 621 806 589 668.
What should the part nos be for UK headlights, as they seem to be available. Is the part no. different for the euro cars?

Hello

Lens for:
Right-side traffic
Left 000 820 12 66
Right 000 820 13 66

Not sure but epc says that this numbers are for left-side traffic
Left 124 820 31 66
Right 124 820 32 66

Thanks for this, looks like my lights are just any old W124 units that have been used. They certainly do not look like those pictured. Phil

Agreed. The 500E headlamp assembly itself is different from the standard 124, so if your car has the standard lights, you might want to buy the complete headlight assemblies instead of just the lenses.

From the left ... heated rear screen, headrests down, rear blind, hazards, alarm code LED, alarm code enter, snow chains and interior light. I'm probably going to get rid of the LED as it's pretty ugly.

There's a 190E near to me in the same colour combo - never noticed it until a few months ago!

BUT...you have to correct the 500E embleme positioning!

The badge is new-ish, as I'm fairly sure the boot has been replaced at some point. Moving it is on my list of things to do, but I've got to work out how to reattach it first!

So does mine not have 500E headlamps? They're definitely different from my '95 E220 and seem to look like every other 500E on Google!

What's weird though is that when you go from dipped headlights to full beam, the inner two lights (which are fog-lights on every other W124) come on too. When you turn the front fog-lights on (using the headlamp switch) the bumper ones come on...

Nice car!
What is with your headlight wipers?

Need to refit them.

Standard 124 lights with fogs on the inside have shields over the H3 bulb. The 500E lights with auxiliary high beams on the inside have no shield over the H3 bulb. There may be a couple of other minor differences. Not a big deal in general, but I'd get prices on both the complete headlamps, and also just the lenses.

On high beam, all four bulbs (both H4 and H3) should come on, so you have four high beam lights. The bumper fogs are separate and turn on when you pull the switch outward. Very different setup than every other 124.

You could replace that LED in the console switch bank with a nice ASR Off switch, heh-heh...

Jelmer

Yeah, the 500E has separate low-beam and high-beam lenses. The fog lights have been replaced by the high-beams, hence the difference lens. If you turn on the high beam with the normal W124 lens you'll get a total mess :)

Nope! just regular 124s. I'm sure you saw the difference in Kubasz photos. Quite a common sight from lazy, "don't give a toss" owners!

What's the story with getting 500E headlamps then - are they now unobtanium? Judging by the state of the headlamps on the car at the moment, they were put on it when it was imported.

bing
04-10-2012, 04:35 PM
You should able to get them thru MB dealers. Part numbers for left hand traffic (UK) as Kubasz posted. I normally use Mercedes Brentford and never have problems on any 124.036 parts.

I live <5 minutes from MBWorld, so I'll enquire with their parts department. I've got a feeling it'll be a moment that hurts the wallet though! I like your Silver 500 too - it wasn't at SS Motors recently was it?

Great! If I remember correctly my lens' cost around 75 but for 94model.

SS Weybridge? I think Charles Ironside the dealer uses them and he has a silver one for sale right now. I take mine to Finch Motors in Brentford.

Better keep that wallet topped up... These cars do love pound notes!!
