Well guys I'm back, not quite the splash I made last time with Fads car, but it's good to be back. ( My 1st E500 http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?503-OWNER-KarlC&highlight=karlc )

I just got my 2nd 1994 E500, it was on Ebay for all of 1 hour when I saw it and took a leap of faith after talking with the seller I jumped in with both feet. Caught a flight to San Fran, landed at 8Pm, was picked up by the seller and taken to his warehouse, once there I did not want to leave. I walked into MB heaven, wait until you see some of the photos, I was no longer as excited about the E500 I just bought LOL. After lots of talking and a test drive in the E500 I filled up the tank and started the 500 mile drive home, man these are great highway cars, just nail it at freeways speeds and you are gooonnnneee !!!

I drove thru the night, no radio (I cant get the code to work yet) but I was wide awake with a BIG fat smile on my face the whole way, talk about a bang for your buck wow !!

She needs some work, mostly cosmetic it seams, I have a big fat stack of dealer repair and maintenance records from the day she was born that I need to study. More photos, updates and mods coming soon, thanks all its good to be back !

UPDATED INFO - So far it looks like the car had OEM Warranty Service / Repairs then Extended Warranty Service / Repairs and $25K + of Dealer Service / Repairs, I still need to work out all that has been done to it but she was pretty well cared for. She needs to be restored is some areas, but I will enjoy doing that, here are some photos of the car ....

Waiting for the GSXR comment "Man, if it was within a 250 mile radius of Idaho (or alternate: "If I'd have seen that auction before it ended") I'd have been ALL OVER that thing at that price !" LOL !

Yeah, Elroy usually buys cars that are decent, fluffs them up a bit on the cosmetics (his trademark term is "we gave it a full street restoration") and replace any obviously broken items, and sell the car at a decent profit. He doesn't charge anywhere near Hatch money, but sometimes his prices can be a bit optimistic. Seems that this car was very fairly priced for what it is, so you done well, Karl. Good work !

Cheers,
Gerry

Probably, yes. Not as a keeper though, I'd have fluffed & flipped. Already got one car with 702/265, don't need another. Me wants red or blue next time!

Thanks guys, its mostly the front seats and steering wheel and small bits that need work, the dash, door panels, headliner and back seats are in great shape !

Dave is a hard man to keep up with, I just stumbled into this one

Roy had no real interest in it I think that it was to new in his eyes, he surely could have fixed it up a bit and sold it for more. I glad that he did not tho, as most would have spray painted the seats and I hate that it makes them look so cheek to me.

Gerry I was thinking of you looking at some of the cars he had, will post up some pixs of the other cars he had in the warehouse soon. By the way do you have any past info on this one VIN = WDBEA36E2RC170426 ????

I glad that he did not tho, as most would have spray painted the seats and I hate that it makes them look so cheek to me.Indeed, Elroy fancies himself as much more of a vintage car guy, so he probably lucked into this car as some sort of a steal or by-product of another deal, or a customer traded it to him as part of a deal for one of his cars, etc. Elroy is much more of a "Gullwing to 108/109/111/112" guy with specialization in SLs ... Gullwings, 190s, Pagodas and 107s.

He nearly ground-up restored a 6.3 about 13-14 years ago and had TONS of money (>$50K) into it. It won the Hillsborough Concours that year, and he sold it I think a couple of times for some big coin (at the time), but he lost his shirt on it and he told me back then (around 1999 -- I used to visit him regularly on my monthly trips to the Bay Area when I worked for Intel) that he'd never touch a 6.3 again. And I think he's only sold a couple or three of them since.....

He's a nice guy though, but I always felt he had a fairly high opinion of himself. Which is not necessarily a BAD thing, it is what it is. I haven't spoken to Roy in probably 6-7 years though.

Cheers,
Gerry

Didn't pay much attention to the e500, was interested in something else. But from what I understand it was a local acquisition, and that it would be freshened up.. It seems he opted not to.

Warning: Get a photo of the back side of the steering wheel. If it's from a 1992 or 1993 model, it may not have the proper holes to allow fitment on a 1994-up vehicle. You can drill/dremel the holes if you don't mind that sort of thing, if it is the early type wheel.

Also the Avant Garde M140 are low pressure cast vs Rotiform BLQ gravity cast.

Why a 235 tire on an 8.5" wheel, is it because the lack of sizes inventory? A 245 tire would fit much better...

Sounds like it, yes, at least with local inventory (?). The 235 is a bit small but still approved for an 8.5 width, and with the same size all around, it won't mess up the ABS/ASR/cruise.

FYI, TireRack has 245/40/18 DWS in stock at $186/ea (click here (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Continental&tireModel=ExtremeContact+DWS&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=44YR8ECDWSXL&tab=Specs)).

Yes I checked with TireRack, but it's amazing what you find out that places really have when you call and make them check stock. For some reason many places told me that the DW and DWS would not be back in stock for months, maybe they just want to sell me something right then ?

I ended up finding the best prices at SaveOnTires.com they are ran by American Tire Depot, they had the best prices on line and gave me an even better price over the phone.

there's really not much difference.
A 245 tire will have a taller profile than the 235 tire by 4mm. On bad roads, those +4mm can play into a smoother ride.

235/40/18 sidewall = 94 mm (3.7'') - When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 59.2mph (95.3km/h): 1.3% slower vs. OEM 16" 225/55/16.

245/40/18 sidewall = 98 mm (3.9'') - When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 59.9mph (96.4km/h): 0.2% slower vs. OEM 16" 225/55/16.

OEM 16" 255/55/16.

245/40/18 sidewall = 98 mm (3.9'') - When speedometer reads 60mph (96.6km/h) actual speed will be 59.9mph (96.4km/h): 0.2% slower vs. OEM 16" 255/55/16.

Yep, assuming all tires are made the same.... but with a bit smaller and lighter tires it will get there faster ;)

Well, the 18" wheels with a 235 tire will need more revolutions per mile to get you there. Conti DWS tires are light to begin with and the difference between the 235/40 tire 245/40 tire is 1lbs.

Steve, I am sure it was just a typo on your part, but to clarify: OEM tire size was 225/55/16. Not 255.

The wheel is usually the heavier of the combo and that's why the larger you go in rim size (even with the same overall diameter) you will usually see a heavier setup. Also, you will be pushing the majority of the weight (the wheel) outward from the center of rotation which plays a role in inertia as well. Not only overall weight matters.

That being said, a 235 tire will indeed change the overall gearing of the car as Steve mentioned. It will affect speedometer readings and even lower MPG, but 1.3% is negligible if you ask me. Hell, if you are going to count it, you also have to look on the flip side of that argument: the car essentially has shorter gears now and, if traction isn't an issue, it will accelerate faster! :-p

My thoughts exactly, also keep in mind this is not a daily driver for me so it was not the biggest concern, knowing me I'm not even sure how long I will keep the wheel / tire set up.

Thanks all !

This E500 needs a bit of restoration here and there, one of the items was a bad dent it its gorgeous fender. I'm not sure why the seller did not make the effort to bring her back to life a bit before selling but, I'm enjoying it.

Thanks guys I am enjoying it, one of the better upgrades that you can do I think. I got it on EBay, you have to find an airbag that fits also, and the color will no be stop on so I redid the color of the airbag to match the steering wheel better. Yes I did the install myself the hardest part was getting to the 30M star head screws that hold the airbag on.

I replaced my cracked heater hose, that was a pain as its hard to get to some of the ends, and updated some of the cooling system. I don't like the dark yellow overflow tank so I replaced it the level sender, cap overflow hose and all new Zerex G-05 antifreeze. When doing all of this I noticed that one of the wires on the level sender was disconnected, Glen was nice enuf to solder it all back together, now it as good as new and the light on my dash is working as it should be ! THANK GLEN !!

As are as weight goes here is what I have so far ...

Total weight is 45 lbs with like new Mich Piolt sport AS plus 255/35/19 tire, Tires Rack says 26lbs for the tire so that puts the Renntech 19x9 et39 right at 19lbs

Nice wheels, Karl. Now you need to slap on larger brakes to fill up the wheels. Btw, how is the ride comfort on the 19's with the lowered suspension?

+1 with Jelmer..Karl, congrats you created a piece of art !! That steering wheel is mouthwatering !

In contrast to most here on the forum I am not much into embellishments/upgrades (I believe I have the only 100% stock car) but those rims and that steering wheel I would consider for myself. Plus Terry's or Glen's exhaust system.... ...let's see what I do after the 625k...maybe I spend some money on the "silly" things...:thought:

btw I had the mushroom/pebble/nut ice cream (whatever) interior on my previous car, the E400. Same color combination as Karl's. It looks phantastic, agreed, the most aesthetic combination, but I was actually glad to get black leather on the 500, only for everyday use reasons. If you have champignon leather to start with after some years of daily use you get shi(i)take/portobello very quickly and the beauty is gone. Beige leather requires a lot of maintenance (which I do not have time for)

Looks are one thing. Function is another. Yes, they look good, but 19" wheels on a .036 car spec'd for 16"??? Are you a California boulevardiere or a driver wth this car?

(Disclaimer..no disrespect) I don't care what anybody does with their own vehicle...that's the beauty of having & doing with your own thing...but what happens when flogging your E?; cornering hard & driving over speed-bumps or rough roadways with 19" wheels? No rubs or bottoming out with this setup (i.e. profile & et) ???
Color me amazed if not.

I'm nothing more than curious. I can't imagine an .036 functioning anywhere near its capabilities on 19's.

I think Karl will need to join Vookster at the next Willow Springs track day, so they can compare lap times on staggered 17's vs non-staggered 19's! With lots of photos and video. I'd join in with my staggered 18's if I could!!

I'm no expert but the same overall diameter and less weight that stock cant be all bad.

And as much as I'd like to say that I drive my car at the track a lot, well I don't, I just drive it. Sometimes harder that others, but even then is on roads here in the USA that are mostly made straightish, sadly.

Lastly, I do like lowered cars with larger wheels, I think the right stance and the right wheels can make or break the looks of a car and I do enjoy looking at them.

Yes I could see that, LA roads suck, fortunately for me the roads around here are pretty nice, and the fact that the 19" RennTech Monolites are 19lbs hepls a lot I'm sure.

I can go a step further on the L.A. roads - even with 17" wheels the ride can be less than favorable at times and that's with very light wheels as well. When I still had the OEM 16" wheels, the ride comfort was a bit better.

We could play with the tire compounds and the psi to adjust the tire feedback, but you can only go so far.

Karl - welcome to the club. Hard to believe we have three E500Es with Monolites within 10 miles of each other. I can't wait to see you car in person. Time for a Monolite GTG!

As far as roads, other than Carlsbad and Poway, what cities in San Diego County have decent roads? If I have to leave the neighborhood, I tend to leave my 22"-shod beast in the garage for fear of slicing a tire or damaging a wheel - which I've done recently, again.

Again, great choice of wheels, IMHO!
