Hello folks...

I just bought this high mileage and well worn California car. just the way I like 'em!

This ain't my first rodeo. Not that I've ever really been to a rodeo. But when it comes to cars and motorcycles i've had way more then my share. And the one thing that all of my rides share its that they have all been modified or highly modified. And many of them end up either sold to a collector to cherish and polish or they end yup being part of my collection and then played with on the track.

So now I have this 20 year old Benz to play with. In perfect condition!:thumbsup2: And what makes it even better is they I didn't pay very much either. Negotiation is paramount!

So, what am I going to do with this "plain Jane" sedan? I'm going to do some "stuff". ;-) But first some repairs need to be made. Some parts need to be replaced.

I'm a member of a few MB boards and also on several motorcycle forums. So I intend on putting this car "out there" as it gets its rebuild and transformation.

Enjoy the pics!

Cordially,

Miguel

Yes... What surprises me the most its how much these cars are followed and tracked. Its almost every 500E for sale end up on a forum board.

I will have lots of questions soon. For instance, what's up with the side mirrors?

Cheers!

Do you mean why one is square and the other is a rectangle? That's one of the "features" of the W124... LOL!

I've retitled this thread to an "OWNER - Calspeed" thread here on the "Owners and their Cars" sub-forum, so you can keep this thread updated with your progress, in one place.

There is plenty of information on this forum about any type of modification you would want to do, as well as any type of major or minor repair that you would need to make on the car.

Welcome, some very interesting pictures you've posted!

What do you mean with " I'm going to do some "stuff""? Fix her up completely, or more the tuning/modding way?

Yes Jelmer's avatar is hot. I wonder if it is his wife or his mistress awaking...
Just think some people wanted to restrain his avatars... what a shame it would have been.

what's up with the side mirrors?

Ok , here are few a versions as to why (some explanation could be just a myth though)

1. Passenger side actually larger. This is to provide for a larger mirror in addition to a convex/aspherical one resulting in an increased field of View.

2. The passenger's side mirror (square) on W124/201 cars is shorter than the driver's side mirror (rectangle) so the overall width of the car would be a bit narrower. This is very useful in most streets in European cities and towns.

3. Another plus was that designers found that drivers tended to scratch more often the passsenger's side mirror than the driver's side. A shorter mirror on the passenger side would definitely prevent the accident prone device.

4. At the W124 press realease brochure, designer Mr. Bruno Sacco accounted for the nice assymetric look the mirrors provided, braking tradition at that time.

Anyone know the official reason?

Welcome, Calspeed!

@Jelmer, you're corrupting this thread, man! Can I have that avatar once you're done or fed up with it, please? Oh and make it bigger;);)

Did some cleaning today. Always a nice way to see what I got myself into. And I did find some things that I didn't see before. Cosmetics. Whatever! :-|

But "Goldie" the name my son gave to the car sure shines nice.

AFAIK, all Smoke Silver .036's delivered to the USA came with Cream-Beige (1992-1993) or Parchment (1994) interiors, color code 275 (aka 'shroom, quartz, and a dozen other terms worldwide).

I've only seen the brown/brazil interior in Euro-spec cars, but someone could have special-ordered one in the USA. Only the privileged few who have access to the EPC datacard extract can say for sure.

No, the KTM SuperDuke has the factory swingarm. But the bike is anything but original. Lots of modifications.

Some statistics in this regard (only for .036 USA):

Color code / Interior code / Number of cars

702 / 273 / 1
702 / 271 / 5
702 / 275 / 178

Wow! So there are five Smoke Silver cars out there with black interior, and one with brown. Amazing. I've never seen one in the USA, althought I'm not surprised given that 97% have 275 interior...

Thanks for the info!!

Great, now we're going to have discussions about Brazilians... oy....

BTW, you are correct. The USA name for interior code 273 is not "brown". It is "Dark Brown". Click here (http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/articles/1993_brochures/1993_USA_paintwork+upholstery.pdf). My bad!

Nope, we're not going to have those discussions. The Dutch and German brochure say "Brasil", the UK one says "Brazil".

I can't help it that some marketing dude thought Americans wouldn't like Brasil and thought it wise to change it to dark brown! ;-)

gsxr

Well, see, there's like a whole country here in the Americas called - get this - "Brazil".

I guess MB didn't want to risk having any confusion. Probably not an issue across the pond in Europe.

I had to replace the left headlight as the unit had a bad break. It was a little more involved then I expected it to be. But since I was in there I figured I do some cleaning.

So, what is this green plug that I see?

I also need to get the plastic surround replaced on the right side.

Hi Miguel...congrats on the car, looks pretty clean !!

Are you referring to the green plug on the headlite assembly?

If I may also, for a few (hundred) bucks more ...instead of buying another US headlite surround; the one piece European spec headlites can still be bought pretty reasonably here in the USA and will greatly improve the night vision and the overall look of the car in general. Your OE US headlites are worth a few bucks too to another W124 owner. Search the topic here...all the info you could ask for on them have been discussed. I think parts.com still has the best online prices on them and shipping does not hurt the wallet by any means.

I hope you have many more happy miles with your new car.

We will be looking at options. Bilsteins or Konis? My stock rears are the originals with 200k miles on them. The car is soft on all corners. Feels like an 80's Cadillac.

No experience with Koni's, but going from OEM Sachs to Bilstein sport shocks (front only) made a significant difference on handing and a slight edge in braking. With added H&R springs, your handling should improve even further. Koni's do offer an advantage when it comes to available adjustment in firmness for street to track use, or in general. Bilstein sport shocks do feel great right out of the box and although I might not try Koni's, the Bilstein's feel great. I haven't been to the track since I got my Bilstein sport shocks to fully test them, but so far from street use, the car feels so much tighter and the handling in the front is so much better than before.

Which tracks and race types are you planing to attented?

I would love to know what the 500E can turn for lap times at Sears and Thunderhill. I spent a couple years on both those tracks on my old 1997 GSX-R750. Of course, that was on the old Sears track layout, which was longer, before they shortened the track past turn 10 (?) to eliminate the high-speed run up to the "bus stop" U-turn. Ah, the good ol' days...
