Anyone recently purchase a quality one? What I have found is either cheap quality and/or does not fit properly.

I was going to recommend you check these guys out...but they no longer have the grills it seems. They had nice aftermarket ones.

Why not get the real deal and mod it? Not much has to be done to get it to fit properly. Yeah, it is expensive new OE tho...I would look aftermarket too I think.

To modify the original 600 grill is not too difficult as Jimbo already said. Did this too, since i couldn't find a repro part in proper quality. Bit pricey though.

+1

This is a "one-time-done-option" on the car, so go original and be done once and for all. :-)

My car had an original grille from a 600 fitted. The company GAP (Germany Auto Parts, and not cheap clothing GAP, we are on a car forum you know :agree:) where the ones to put a hacksaw in it. Looks like an easy enough job for anyone to do in the garage. My grille insert was so chipped and blasted that it needed to be replaced, and I opted for an original insert instead.

What is cost of the S600 grill?

I believe it is $340 complete from parts.com, including the chrome shell which you don't need.

If im not totally wrong this is s600 part number for the grill insert 140 888 03 23 and this is for the the complete grill 140 880 0583

There are two different S600 grilles... through 1994, and 1995-up. 140-880-03-83 is the complete early grille, 140-880-05-83 is the complete late grille.

The inserts are 140-888-01-23 (early) and 140-888-03-23 (late) but that is just the plastic, without the stainless trim. If you buy the plastic insert, you need to buy each stainless piece separately.

UPDATE: We need the late style S600 grille, 140-880-05-83 (complete), or late insert 140-888-03-23 with the thirteen separate stainless pieces 140-888-xx-85.

You are completely on. :D :D

Apparently the price went up. You can buy the insert for under $200 and then get the thirteen strips for another ~$200 or so total (I didn't look them all up).

Complete grille is ~$525 currently at MBFL...

EDIT: Price for 140-880-05-83 as of August 2016 is $800 MSRP (!!!), $592 from Naperville (http://www.mboemparts.com/oe-mercedes-benz/1408800583).

Crazy! those prices skyrocketed the beginning of that year. And its intentional, believe me.

Up to $725 MSRP now for the complete assembly. Remember, this includes the W140 surround which is useless:
http://www.oediscountparts.com/parts/index.cfm?make=Mercedes-Benz&year=&searchText=140-880-05-83&action=oePartSearch&siteid=215242

The bare insert is $236 MSRP plus the thirteen strips at roughly $250 for all, ~$500 list, probably ~$375 from MBCC or Lionel. Definitely cheaper to buy the pieces.

So a question: Since my front 1994 Facelift grill is on, but the hood is de-badged, would a "PRE Facelift" grill assembly fit on my hood?

Nope. WIth a facelift hood, your options are a stock grille frame with stock insert, or a stock grille frame with W140/S600 modified insert. Or something aftermarket.

So when I find a w140/s600 at the yard, grab the insert only if 1995 or newer, cut it to fit my existing frame. Or go thru the hassle of removing the tack weld, and laywer of bondo on my hood, and put my MBOEM gunsight back, get chrome strips. Does that ring right in your ears?

Hello, I'm also looking for this grill for my E500 Limited.

I got a few questions regarding the grill. So if I'm not incorrect, I could buy the insert, and strips (what are strips? are these clips? is there a PN?), and modify it to fit my W124.036 grill surrounding.

Would it be a semi-permanent thing, and I wouldn't/shouldn't swap back and forth between the original grill insert, as well as the avant grill?

Anyway, appreciate all the information that is shared around here. Our cars are rare, but I'm glad that isn't stopping us from sharing important info!
