Hello,
My name is Michel, very active (moderator) on the Dutch forum mercedesforum.nl but here and the 500ectacy forum are more 500 series.

I'am from Holland and drive my 500e (E60 engine sinds august 2010) for almost 3 years and never gonna sell it.
I made a poor bad running 500e to a almost fully loaded one, we are still busy with the car.

Best price with 20% off = 409 euro each including tax en sending.

Also ordered 4 new door strips 38 euro each, I mean the strips on the outsite where the window slides in the door. They where bended and ugly during the 18 years.

Are there any pics of changing a 5.0 M119 into a 6.0. We have changed the stroke and bore on a donor engine. We have the right parts already including ECU.

Do we mis anything?

gsxr
08-12-2010, 08:51 AM
Bore the block & clearance for longer stroke, add modified crank with longer stroke, different rods, pistons, rings, head gaskets, replace EPROM chip in ECU... that's the basics. AMG also port-matched the intake manifold & heads, and possibly ported / polished the intake ports on the heads. They also used different camshafts ($$$$) but those aren't required, although they will add 10-20hp or so compared to the 5L cams (based on RENNtech's power claims for their 6L conversion with/without the 6L cams).

Hi Michel.

You are putting a lot of enthusiasm into your car, that's nice. Exciting with your planned 6.0 swap. :burnout:

I was looking closely on your switchboard and it seems that switch no.4 from left is for the antenna? Do you have any part number on that?

And what is switch no.6 from left?

Regards

I believe the function of the switches, from left to right, is as follows:

- Rear window defroster
- Rear seat headrest release
- Rear sun shade up/down
- Antenna up/down adjust
- Hazard flasher
- Autobahn horn (high/low tone switch)
- Door locking control switch
- ASR traction control (snow) switch
- Interior door light control switch

The autobahn horn switch controls the two types of horns installed on the car. One has a high tone, the other a lower, "normal" tone. I have this option on my US-spec 560SEC believe it or not.

The adjustable antenna is something you don't see very often. I also have this on my 560SEC but it was phased out on the US 560SECs for the 1990 or 1991 model year, I believe. I don't think I've seen it on any US MB after that time frame and I didn't know that MB was still offering it as an option on non-US cars after that time.

Very cool !! :deniro:

Cheers,
Gerry

Wow - altering the horn loudness, that's special! Never seen that before, I guess it's another German speciality for safe autobahn driving.

I should really like to have the antenna switch. It is annoying that the antenna goes up as soon as the CD-player is used. The 560 SEC are getting more and more famous here in Norway, so I guess I'll manage to find the P/N and order it.

Cheers

Thank Gerry

The switch to lock the doors is now replaced by a (W140) switch to turn on/off the Park Distance Control on the front I had to offer one to make places for the PDC one.

The horn low and high is made to give a claxon before U turns in the mountains to alarm upcomming trafic.

The sitch for the antenne is for sale at any dealer in Europe.

Where was the door lock switch originally located? I've seen them in several places such as where you have it or in the shifter console instead of the speaker fader control. From which year was this switch aviable on the 124s?

Hi.

I think the door lock switch became standard with the face-lift at autumn '93. They are mostly placed in the shifter console as you describe.

Does anyone know what type of logic is required to activate the door locks at the touch of the button? Anyone done this mod before?

I haven't done it before, but it's on my lengthy "to do" project list. Be careful which lock switch you buy... the correct one is p/n 202-820-40-10, which has a red LED indicator which I believe can still be used in place of the original alarm LED, while adding the lock/unlock function separately.

Given the sheer number of 124s that you have, that must be quite some list.

I keep having the little devil on my shoulder poking me, telling me to buy you a 300SDL, 350SD rod-bender or a 560SEC, and ship it to your place, just to spice up your life a little bit and give you some diversity ...

Yes, and please provide some information about the exhaust system, and how it was created/routed to both sides of the rear of the car. Thanks !

For the exhaust i bought a complete system of Eisenmann (one of the best exhaust systems for MB and BMW). The system excisted of 2 middle mufflers and 2 end mufflers 80mm round used on de SL65 and E60 M5 also available are 120mm oval but I like round more. At the garage they are great with welding and making it custom fit, we have to remove the housing of the spare tire to make space for the right end muffler. We also removed the kathalisks and ready it is with at least 15bhp more.

The enige was made out of a spare engine wich i bought over a year ago in Germany. In all this time my friend who works at a engine rebuild company did it in spare time and evening hours to reduce the costs. I am not technical enough but bore and stroke are bigger with fitting pistons etc, chip in ecu, gasgets and all stuff to make it a 6.0 liter engine and even important to let it run. It has been tested by The Dutch RDW so it is officialy a 6.0 liter on paper. The old engine is back to the rebuild company where they make it as new in a few years so we have a spare 100% brand new engine.
The only problem is that my friend doesn't take pictures he is to moddest, I am going next month to his company to take pics myself of the rebuilding of the M119 engine.

Today i did pollish all the chrome with Belgom thats great stuff.

l bouhgt a damaged 6.0l engine (there was a hole in the engine at the bottum) in Germany from a total loss E60 or SL60. It a connection of my friend, I payed 1500 euro for it. The eprom chip is a smal silver microchip don't ask me what it does.

Awesome car! Love your Videos, eve the "older" ones at night in Holland are great! :-)
It would be nice if you do something, so far no-one has done with a E60 at all - 0-250km/h onboard-video with almost empty fuel-tank on a german highway. :-)
Or at least a 0-100km/h video if possible... I really would love to see this, no-one so far saw something like it.

Also, did you added the AMG camshafts? If not it was probably a good choice. As far as i remember Bernard Marijanovic (mb-evolution, head of germn W124-Forums), replaced the AMG-Camshafts on a customers E60AMG as he was rebuilding it and he boosted power to ~430 (DIN) HP and ~635NM(DIN) or 468lb/ft of Torque!
That should be tremendous compared to the stock 500E. And this was a car without even something changed on the exhaust-side. Imagine yours with your sport-metallic-catalyzers and 2-way till the End... That could be even a bit stronger.

Hi Christian,

Any more info on the camshafts Bernard used? manufacturer? or does he make them? will it work with other displacements (5.0 or 6.4)?

I think with headers, sport Kat, x-pipe instead of resonator and new back box it should make about 450-460 based on the numbers Bernard claims...Now Just to find a company willing to do the headers.

I had a look at the kleemann SS headers for the C63 M156 block, its not a true header design but has large power gains and is small size.

No he never shared any information regarding what exactly he has done to that E60 AMG, even though people were asking. I think it was "our" assumption based on the pictures that lead to the conclusion that the camshafts had been replaced, as you could clearly see in the pictures as he was done with overhauling the E60, that there were brand-new totally clean camshafts in place.
And he also commented the post with a statement something like (free translated out of remembering): "A special ingredient/upgrade has been added to the engine and the car is now producing 43*HP and 63*NM".

Here is the picture from the dyno: Top is HP, Bottom is Torque: https://www.500eboard.com/forums/images/imported/2011/01/9.jpg

But keep in mind that AMGs Cylinderheads intake/outtakes are polished and the whole intake is portmatched. So when Michel has not done this to his self-made E60 engine too, power-gain will be significantly less. Also when he has a LH with WOT he needs to reprogramm it to use the more air, as on full-throttle, toally fixed injection-values are used, probably not ready for usage with the more air incoming from the camshaft-change.

I believe if you look at all the photos, you'll see the original cams were severely worn and that's why they were replaced. However I think they were replaced with new AMG E60 cams, not anything custom/special.

Might just be something along the lines of additional porting on the heads... hard to say though, there's nothing obvious in any of the photos. I archived all the pics on my website here (http://www.w124performance.com/images/M119/AMG_E60_engine_rebuild/) btw - it's a lot to look at. I'd love to get an engine stand like that, but can't find any information on the manufacturer or model number. The original thread is at this link (http://www.w140forum.de/motor-getriebe-antriebsstrang/3962-revision-eines-mercedes-v8-amg-6-liter-triebwerks.html), but the photos seem to be missing...

Stock Power was probably around 400HP, as the E60s are known to have more power than the claimed 381HP.

The next question is: where did he obtain those items, and where can we purchase them? Are they available from some vendor in Europe, or were they one-off custom pieces? Particularly the camshafts, lifters, springs and ECU. I wonder if the cam kit might be from Hagmann...?

I heard that RENNtech also used adjustable camshaft sprockets (gear-wheels), but without knowing what the adjustment values are ("x" degrees advanced or retarded), that doesn't help us much.

I love that power curve and want to get that under my hood - someday!!

I was at the AutoSport Expo in Birmingham. I was asking the cam manufacturers about having camshaft set made for M156 engines.
A few British companies are willing to do the work, But they don't have prior experience with MB/AMG engines. Prices seem reasonable, they need a set of original cams first.

I also found an Italian company willing to make forged 100mm pistons for the M119 for 2K Euro ! but then came to an issue of how to get the cylinders and crank balancing done in Q8, whole engine has to be shipped to the UK of Italy for that.

BTW I am guessing its a MAHA dyno system Graph with crank HP correction software.

Stock Power was probably around 400HP, as the E60s are known to have more power than the claimed 381HP.

I know, But we need him to show more ;)

Hi,
well i don't know which brands he used, but i think the camshafts including springs and the lighter hydraulic lifters are probably from Brabus, as he has good connections to Brabus (He even drives many Brabus M119s and M120s in various W124, R129 and W140 cars he owns).
ECU might be changed by him on the dyno or probably from brabus either. Anyone remembers that Bernard was selling that M119 camshaft-Set in the 500Ecstasy.com Forums some years ago? IIRC they were with valve-springs and he said, as people were asking, that the ECU on normal (Non-Brabus) M119s has to be adjusted in order to take full advantage of the new camshafts. (Probably its the fixed value on WOT-Cars to use the more air at WOT?).

Anyway i will drop him a PM and ask him what exactly he has done. I'm sure he will giv us the Info.

On a side note, after looking at the photos again, I can see the custom slotted cam sprockets. It appears that the intake cam is set several degrees retarded. The exhaust cam looks like it may be in the stock / normal position or perhaps just slightly different from stock. (??)

Yet more information:

There was a change in the factory M119 hydraulic lifters (and valve springs). Early lifters were 82g, late lifters were 64g:

http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%2 ... 5-2110.pdf (http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/119/05-2110.pdf)

I believe this change happened with the 1992/1993 model year break, same time the camshafts changed; i.e. the 92 motors had the double valve springs with heavy lifters, while 93-up had single valve springs with lightweight lifters. (I'm not positive about the model year break, it could be in early '93 production... EPC says the actual change with the late cam / lifters / springs was as of engine # 119974-006123; however this FSM doc (http://www.w124-zone.com/downloads/MB%20CD/W124/w124CD1/Program/Engine/119/05-2150.pdf) says it was as of MY93, see page 2, footnote 6).

After looking at the photos again, it's clear this IS NOT a 1994 E60 AMG engine. It is a 1992-vintage 6.0L, since he shows pictures of double valve springs, 8-rib serpentine belt, and pre-facelift headlights. The reduced weight lifters are just the late-style factory units. However it's not clear if he used aftermarket valve springs or not; they should be single valve springs for the lightweight lifters, but he shows photos of a broken (!!) double spring near the end of the thread.

Christian_K

Right, he says in the Topic he noticed the broken spring (and he also said luckyly they were double) as we was changing the camshafts and the new valve-springs. For tuning-camshafts on the M119 you always have to change the valve-springs for new fitting ones with the new camshafts.

On my totally revised engine i'm yet to complete, the pre-owner also changed the hydraulic lifters.. do you think mercedes just take new light one for all engine models independent of year?

Christian, can you translate the dyno information from the photo below? I.e., what do these mean?

Prad
Pverl
Pnenn

Prad is power at the wheels
Pverl is the loss of power (German Verlust) either from crank to wheels or this "break-power" which you measure on the dyno when letting the car roll-out
Pnenn is the german word "Nennleistung" or in english probably "rated power"

Be aware that the power displayed on his dyno is in KW/PS/HP (EWG). Normal german KW/PS is in DIN KW/PS, so its a bit more in DIN and less in EWG.

The EPC indicates that the new, lighter lifter supercedes the older, heavier lifter... so it should be ok to install the new ones on an early/1992 engine with double springs.

Any news from Bernard on the special camshafts yet? Strange that the "custom" valve springs were still 2-piece instead of the newer 1-piece design, no?

I really wonder which ones are in my car... They really looking brand-new, just like the rest inside my cylinder-heads, but on my list of changes by the pre-owner there is no word about changed valve-springs. I hope the old ones, which are probably still in, will run with the new lifters *fingerscrossed*.
No news so far from Bernard. Answers usually take a week, as he is veeery busy as usually i've heard.

Here was his statement about the broken valve-springs:

hier noch Bild der gebrochenen äußeren Ventilfeder, die nach dem Ausbau der Ventile aus dem Kopf zu Tage kam. Zum Glück sind die Ventilfedern in doppelter Ausführung, sonst hätte das Ventil längst auf dem Kolbenboden aufgeschlagen
Eng:

here is a picture of the broken outer valve-sping, which got visible after removing the valves. Luckyly the valve-springs are double by design, otherwise the valve would already have touched the piston-bottom.

I haven't done it before, but it's on my lengthy "to do" project list. Be careful which lock switch you buy... the correct one is p/n 202-820-40-10, which has a red LED indicator which I believe can still be used in place of the original alarm LED, while adding the lock/unlock function separately.
Dave,

I'm sure my Limited doesn't have any LED in the doorlock switch. Is it many choices on this switch? ...and what makes it to get them fit?
(I'm going to install one in my SuperMerc)

I'm also interested in the P/N on the antenna switch, if someone have that handy.

Arnt,

The central lock switch with built-in red LED is p/n 202-820-40-10, and it uses pin bush housing 013-545-30-28. This is the one I have in my cars, but it's not wired & functional (yet). I believe the LED allows you to install it in the factory alarm LED position, so you have two functions in one location (alarm indicator, and central lock switch).

There are two other central lock switches that are the same size which will fit, but they are slightly different design:

124-821-50-51 has no LED, and does not snap-in to the pin bush housing. I think it uses pin bush housing 021-545-04-28, but I'm not positive. I'm also not sure if the white icon is on the top half or bottom half of the switch face.

140-820-63-10 also has no LED, but has an extra prong that snaps into the connector as a positive lock. The 140- number uses pin bush housing 021-545-04-28, and the white icon on the switch face is on the bottom half instead of the top half as shown in the photo.

Note that for the manual antenna switch to work, you need the early-style antenna....

Thanks Dave, I got the understanding now, :scratchchin: we were talking about two solutions here. I'm looking for the regular switch without LED, same as in my Limited. I can easily through the gear console panel and check the PNs.

As for the antenna, you mean the type from a 126 car, since the switch comes from that car? Just as Gerry mentioned in a previous post here.

Michel - sorry for hijacking your thread a bit. You are sharing great info about your car. :beerchug:

After one day work, the result is that we need to replace all chain conductors. Therefore we need to take off the front of the engine.
We replace all hoses, rotors, distruButers, sieve, gaskets etc etc (today to the dealer for 800 euro's small materials)
Tomorrow the parts for the cilinderheads wil arrive

Hei Michel.

Good to see you progress well on the repair. The gasket set was quite spendy! I guess it includes all gaskets for the engine block, does it include the inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets too? This is a good opportunity to do some preps on the inlet and exhaust channels when the heads are out, just to optimize for enhanced flow.

michel
05-16-2012, 06:50 AM
yes all gaskets incl. the bolds for the cilinderheads, and yes a great opportunaty to optimize, we will do so.

Stick that legendary 39mm intake valve in there along with a port & polish!! Then you'd need bigger camshafts too... :D

Ohhh yeahhh... Do the Hagmann Profile at least (search on Forums), this will probably give you another 30HP (DIN).
At least thats what a guy in german W124-Freunde Forum has posted after he installed the Hagmann cams into his E60AMG.

Here http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?837-CATALYTIC-CONVERTER Michel speaks of 342bhp on the dyno. I doubt all is stock in that engine ;)

michel

This measurement was at the time with 5 liter engine and was because i have no cat's and à open airflow Eisenmann exhaust.

A new day in the process, the front is of the engine and we came on a defect waterpump, oilchain + tensioner and 2 motormounts

Why do you have a center wheel for the chain?
Nice pictures! Keep em coming...
Price for the Headgaskets are fun, arent they? Lol....
Elring offers them for 250€/piece IF you order 3 Sets at a bare minimum. Just say you want M119.974 (and the correct type of heads - open/closed deck) Headgaskets with a bore of 101mm. When now adding the heads to the block again, and tightening them, the metal 101mm bore sleeve in the gasket compresses to exactly 100mm.

EDIT: Can you do close-up pics of your Heads? The ports from both sides?

Here's to a nearly new engine

The price, while high, for 3 sets (1500 Euro), is less than a single set from Mercedes or AMG which is about 1800 Euro's a pair!!!

No one ever said this hobby is cheap.

Things are looking good... Test drive !

What was the cost of 6.0L parts (Head Gasket..)?

michel
06-20-2012, 01:22 PM
Complete gasket set was a little under 1000 euro

195910
06-20-2012, 01:34 PM
That's not bad! I was expecting something like 1500 Euro each.

Any other 6.0L specific parts replaced?

michel
06-20-2012, 02:22 PM
No 2 waterpumps, dyno (reviced), oilpump (reviced), all rubber hoses, engine mounts and revices stering pump.
And of course al parts in the cilinderheads

Christian_K

Congrats Michel!
What you mean with "ITS DONE, what a difference." ?
Any difference in driving behavior?

michel
06-20-2012, 03:11 PM
I mean the job is done, we discovered a lot of minor issues like cracked hoses, vacuum leaks, burned rotors, the enigine mounts make a big difference as well.

Due to al these things its feels silky smouth, the gear shifting is better as well.
Now easy going for the first 1000 miles

michel
06-21-2012, 08:18 AM
This day was around 22 degrees and the engine never came above the 90 degrees so my problem with the engine running 100-110 degrees was for sure the waterpump.

What's kinda sad is that when he was driving in third and I was flooring it in second, he drove away and I couldn't catch up. That car is seriously fast. We didn't do a proper race because of his gearbox needing one last tweak, but that will come next time. And I already know I won't stand a chance.

Don't worry your car runs great, it would be very strange if it was the other way around.
There is always something faster, mine against the Norwegian 6.0 supercharger would be dissaster for me.
