View Full Version : NOW AVAILABLE: Reproduction factory data cards

Finally, after 10+ years of wanting to do this, I have been able to create an exact reproduction of my original data card -- at least, the one that would have come in the original owner's manual of my car. My car didn't come with the data cards, so I always wanted to re-create an exact replica from "scratch".

My prior thread was to obtain a couple of examples for comparative purposes. After a couple of minor adjustments to my replicopy, I present the final product here.

It would easily be possible to create other versions of this for folks who don't have their own data cards, using (mostly) the data card data that is available in the EPC data card for one's car as a source.

That said, it takes a bit of time and skill with Photoshop or other image manipulation program to create a proper data card that works.

Let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Gerry

If anyone is in need of a data card repro (i.e. you don't have yours), I am willing, for a small fee for my time and effort, to create reproduction data cards using your data card information in the EPC. I can then print out 3 copies on card stock (thick paper) in the correct size, and ship them to you. And, of course, e-mail you the final file.

There were two different versions of the data cards that came with the cars ... one was a "loose" data card, and the other one was pasted to the inside of the rear cover of the Maintenance Booklet.

Though they look nearly identical, this data card reproduction is the one that is pasted into the back of the Maintenance Booklet.

Each individual data card file requires approximately 2-3 hours of effort, but the result is highly accurate and virtually indistinguishable from the original that would have come with the car. I don't know what the price for this service would be, but probably approximately $30-35 per car, postage paid.

Let me know if interested. We can work out arrangements privately/separately.

Cheers,
Gerry

Data cards for 8899 and Maui are now done and out to them for review and approval.

These new data cards are significantly nicer than the one I did for myself, because I spent several hours cleaning up the card and sharpening things to make them look better.

Several PMs received already. Looks like I have some hours of work to do when I get back home. Please send me PMs so that I have record of your request and your VIN number so that I can pull appropriate data & codes from the EPC.

Also, as a matter of policy -- I will not charge fee for this service, until you have reviewed the file and have approved it. At that point, I'll print out 2-3 copies on appropriate paper, and physically mail them to you via US Priority Mail. And provide you with JPG and high-resolution copies of the final file, electronically. I can provide in any image format, although the master file will be in Adobe Photoshop (.psd) format. The best formats that provide no image quality loss would be PSD or TIF. GIF and PNG would also be acceptable; JPG would only be best for posting electronically.

Cheers,
Gerry

I have seen the "sticker" version of the data cards located in various places on 1990s MBs. For the .036, the one place I have CONSISTENTLY seen them is, as said, up under the rear deck in the trunk.

I have also seen them pasted inside the dashboard (behind the glove box), on the back-side of the trunk lining, and very commonly on the outside of the fuel tank (behind the trunk lining) on many other Benzes.

Guys,

My apologies on this as I have not even gotten started due to almost constant travel and some disruption in my personal life. I haven't forgotten this project and plan to pick it up in August. I'm traveling now through August 1 (I'll be in Australia most of this time, and joining captruff & 600Eric at Legends of the Autobahn) and am looking forward to a bit less travel next month so I can start banging these cards out. I expect I can get 1-2 done per night as I have quiet time in the late evenings to focus on it.

Best regards,
Gerry

Hi Gerry,

I have a 1991 500 SL which is pristine. It is only 45k miles. The warranty book and manual were swapped with a similar car by the dealer. I have the VIN and proof of ownership. I am willing to pay for your time to recreate this valuable card.

My email is kinglaw@pacbell.net in Los Angeles.

Thank you for helping!

Sounds like an incompetent/lazy stealership weasel to me.

if you post your VIN (or PM it to GSXR) you can get your datacard's exact contents.

I have had a service for the past 18 months or so, where I re-create an exact copy of the physical data card that is pasted in the back of the original car service booklet. I charge about $30 per data card, post-paid, as it takes a couple or three hours to get the data card exact and to a high standard. If you are interested, let me know. Obviously I would need your VIN so that I can get the proper data to put on the card as it would have appeared from the factory.

My thread on this service is here: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7163

I've attached one of my data card replicas. They are printed on paper that is the same weight as the originals were. I usually send 2-3 copies and also supply the high-resolution file so that you have it on hand if you want to print your own data cards in the future. Later versions of the data card are very clean and don't contain the thumb-print smudge at the upper right that the image below of my own data card (original prototype) contains.

Cheers,
Gerry

Folks,

I am FINALLY in a place and with enough time that I can begin to create data cards again. What I'd like to do is to have 2-3 orders at a time that I can complete within a few days, and then go on to the next few orders.

Each data card requires approximately 5-6 hours of time to create. All I need is your VIN and postal mailing address to complete it.

From receipt of VIN, it will require approximately 48 hours to complete your data card. Data cards will be mailed to you the same business day that payment is received.

Payment should be sent via PayPal. Please contact me via PM for PayPal specifics and to provide your mailing address.

With the payment of $35.00, postage paid, you will receive:

Three printed copies of your completed data card, on heavy stock paper that is identical to the factory paper.
TIF (high-resolution) and PNG file format copies of your completed data card, that you can download in file form and keep
Printed copies to be delivered to you via US Priority Mail in a Flat Rate Envelope (postage cost: $6.70 out of the $35.00 fee).

Again, per post #6 above, below is what the finished data card looks like.

Cheers,
Gerry

OK Folks - need to call a time-out on the cards - I have four to do.

I'll work through that backlog before I take orders for any more cards. I have a list of about 12 people who wanted them, so I'll be approaching folks to see if they still want to have one made.

Alternately, you can reply here and I'll compare with my list to make sure you are still on it.

Rgds, Stephen

I have fairly regular small & large packages coming from USA (w124 parts!) and most arrive in around a week. But some can take up to 3 weeks. The reason? - Customs.

For example when i recently got the rear SA Calipers from Jeff UK customs held them for over a week before releasing them. 3 days to arrive in UK and they sat for 8 more days in London customs before they let them continue to my destination. And to add insult to injury they send a letter first for handling fee (about 15USD) + the import taxes which has to be paid before Royal Mail will even deliver the item. However, duties should not be applicable for the data cards, its likely they were just caught up in customs.

Gerry- yes I will let you know when I get my cards. I will be headed to Australia next week so they will go to my work address and I’ll get them on my return in a few weeks

OK. The cards don't require a customs form, because they are in a large/flat envelope. I don't have to fill out customs forms for documents only, just for a package/box with merchandise/goods inside. So, it shouldn't be a problem as it is just a large first-class letter.

But, definitely interested to hear how long it takes.

Cheers,
Gerry

I have had no response from folks on the "Orders Reserved" list below, despite their earlier desire expressed to commission a data card. Thus, I am now assuming that these folks no longer have an interest in obtaining a data card reproduction for their car(s).

Now that all cards have been produced (and the last ones are shipping today), I am going to ramp down production for the next 18-24 months. This means that no further cards will be produced for some time into the future.

I will keep production open for the next 48 hours, so if you do want a card, please let me know quickly so that I can get it produced before I shut down. To date, I have reproduced cards for W/C126, R107, and W124 models.
A sincere "Thank You" to everyone who has commissioned data cards, per the list below. I hope everyone is happy with them. Also please let me know if you have received yours, and if not I will re-send to you.

Cheers,
Gerry

One question what does 803 Change of model year mean? 12/92 build. That's about a mid year build for 93 right?

One question what does 803 Change of model year mean? 12/92 build. That's about a mid year build for 93 right? The code basically means that it should be considered to be a 1993 model year car from a technical/parts perspective, despite being produced in 1992.

The "3" in code "803" means that it is a 1993 model year car.

My own E500, which was produced in September, 1993 (so, a fairly early E500 facelift car), has code "804"....same thing, the "4" in the code means a 1994 model year car, despite the car being produced in 1993.

My 560SEC has a code of "809" on the data card, again in which the "9" signifies that it is a 1989 model year motorcar.

Note that the "official" MB model year changeover was traditionally September 1 of any given year. So yes, being built in December of 1992, would mean that your car was built well into the 1993 model year.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Gerry

I think the changeover varied, or perhaps it started moving earlier in the calendar year in the early/mid 1990's. I have owned several cars that did not follow the Sept-1 breakpoint. My 1994 E500 was produced on July 9, 1993 per the VMI, nearly two months prior to Sept-1. And, mine was not the earliest 1994 E500 produced by any means.

There are some more extreme exceptions as well, for example my 1987 300D was built in April 1986.

It may have varied depending on the model and such, but going back decades, the "traditional" model year changeover point was September 1. Also, various models were phased in/introduced at different times of the year at various worldwide auto shows, and so forth. That's why a certain model production could be phased in earlier or later than other models in the line-up that were being changed. There were also variances by plant (Sindelfingen, Bremen, Rastatt, Mannheim, Graz, and so forth).

This is because many Daimler-Benz workers would go on holiday (as is European custom) for much if not all of the month of August, and tooling and incremental "running change" items would be made during this time that the majority of workers were away.

When they would get back on/around Sept. 1, everything would be ready to go for the tweaks made.

This is all pretty well documented. It's not completely and absolutely set in stone, and given E500E production at a different site and by a different company, it could have been on a different schedule. But I'm talking about "traditional" Daimler-Benz production changeover dates -- a tradition that went back many many decades.

Cheers,
Gerry

Ah, that makes sense. And I'm sure through the 1980's it was probably a pretty safe assumption.

However, I really believe this started going out the window in the early 1990's. Even my 1994 S500 (sold to a forum member last year) was built in July 1993, well before the previously-normal September-1 switch.

:klink:It was more of a traditional thing, but until fairly recent years, my understanding was that MB slowed production in the late summer as a lot of its workers were on holiday.

Initial production startup dates of the W124 variants was all over the map .... 124 sedans started very late in 1984, wagons very late in 1985, coupes in the spring of 1987 and convertibles in the spring of 1992. Heck, 123s were produced well into 1985, so there was a good half-year production overlap with 123s and 124s.

W210s started production in the mid-summer of 1995 ... again overlapping W124s at Sindelfingen by about a month or so.

:teufel:Nobody at BW can afford the $35 for a data card. They are either a) too cheap and should not be owning Benzes in the first place; b) too ignorant to know what a data card even is, let alone see the need to actually have one.

Too late though....spent most of the afternoon out in the shop, and got a lot of work done on the coupe. HOW-TOs coming soon.....

Glad you liked them and they came through in the Queen's (Royal) Mail OK.

Yes, I use a heavier "Card stock" paper for printing them, which is very close to the original MB card stock. Unfortunately I have no way to make the original perforations in the edge of the paper.

I'm contemplating doing US dealer "window stickers" next. These would be significantly more expensive (and larger), though.

And, that's a lot more complicated as well! There are decent repops available on eBay [edit: for WINDSHIELD decals, not MSRP sheets] . The tricky part is making sure you are getting a period-correct item, as the [windshield] stickers changed about five times over three decades.

Could there be repercussions for reproducing the "Monroney" stickers? Are they trademarked or copyrighted in some form?

These were not on the cars from the factory - they were printed at the "prep centers" at the ports of entry in most cases. The Classic Center or MBUSA used to offer reproductions of them up until a few years ago. I'll bet Tom Hansen would know if they're still available...I'll drop him a note and ask.

I have never seen a proper and appropriate window sticker reproduced by MBUSA.

What I would need to reproduce the window stickers would be photographs of a real 1992, 1993 and 1994 sticker. I have the base sticker from the time period, but it doesn't have E500E specifics. So, I would need to have them from multiple E500E years to ensure proper accuracy. To really make them accurate, I'd also need each owner to get the appropriate information as to the actual port of entry (there were multiple ports used), original selling dealer, and so forth. There is a LOT more work involved with a window sticker than with a data card, which has stock info that is lifted from the EPC.

It's likely that each window sticker would run probably in the $100+ range due to the amount of custom work involved, and I don't know if most owners are "down" with getting the information I'd need to create a truly accurate sticker.

I'm not worried about copyright issues on a throwaway MB window sticker for a car that is 25 years old.

Attached is a proper window sticker for 1995 model year MBs.

I believe it may also be appropriate for 1994 cars, but NOT for 1992 and 1993 (pre-facelift) models. So, I need to get my hands on a physical copy of a 1992/1993 window sticker, as there will likely be two versions of them depending on ones model year.

My research this morning (posted in this thread (https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12456)) shows that MB used the same format of dealer window sticker through model year 1995, so it is a single form that covers all of the years of the E500E, as well as the late W/C126. This means that after I do a full scan of my window sticker, I can spend some time cleaning it up and creating the first draft "mockup" of it.

What I need from folks here, is an actual photograph of a 1992/1993/1994 dealer window sticker, if you possess such. I am sure that a number of you have them; I would appreciate a cell phone photo (close up) of your complete sticker so I can match the text appropriately to my scan. I also need to carefully match and balance the color scheme as part of the initial "clean-up"/mock-up process. If you can take a photo of your window sticker for me, please e-mail your photo to me at gerry@vanzandt.us

Then I can begin to offer this as a service.

Some further research also shows that MBUSA in some cases can provide copies of original window stickers, and in other cases cannot -- or will not. It is inconsistent. However, it appears that MBUSA DOES have copies in their archives of each car's dealer window sticker. Approximately 20 years ago, I was able to contact MBUSA to obtain a photocopy of the original window sticker for my 1969 300SEL 6.3.

Another avenue could be to go to the originating stealership where one's car was sold, if known. It is likely that they also have copies/records of window stickers for particular sold cars.

Cheers,
Gerry

That's quite OK. GSXR reflexively has said "MBNA" and has for as long as I've known him. Even though the company re-name happened around 1999. (I think it goes along with his green-screen EPC & Windows 95/NT favoritism, Luddism that is particularly ironic given his distaste for CIS-E and the W123 chassis ;-)).
