good news...i am fairly certain the upper wiring harness has been replaced or at least it is in very good condition...

Now for the mystery...what is the deal with the blue wire ?

starts behind the CAN box...

I'm going to further investigate the termination of the blue wire and see what the ground is doing under that harness cover...

more to follow...

ground into harness...factory...?

the blue wire is crimped to a factory looking brown lead...which terminated to this device associated with the PS pump...some sort of solenoid..?

a couple of other questions:

is this some sort of coolant sensor mod...?

what is this plug on the block...the lead to the connector is frayed and exposed...

The upper wiring harness have been renewed or restored, sticker with the part number does not look like original, maybe it is restored. Brown earth wire is in its original location, do not be worried about it.

That part Is not the solenoid, it is an oil pressure sensor. Wire where the connector is frayed is for oil level sensor. It appears that the lower wiring harness requires renewal or restoration, at the same time you get rid of that blue wire.

I just restored the lower cable harness for myself because it is so simple. I used only the finest materials and made it more long lasting than the original, it still paid only the fifth of the original. The wires are silicone insulated which stand for -80C to +280C and every wire is coated with fiberglass tube prevent scrubing and attached with adhesive heat shrink tubing.

I noticed on one picture that knock sensor wire protection is also in poor condition, check the wires themselves too.

Juho is exactly correct. If you want to replace the starter harness (which also goes to the alternator, oil pressure sensor, and oil level sensor) rather than rebuild it, order MB p/n 124-540-27-30. Current list price in USA is $284. (!!) See attached photos.

Also, yes, the one photo shows a coolant sensor mod, for the twin electric fans... probably a copy of the "CoolHarness", which triggers the fans at a lower coolant temp (usually 92-98C instead of the stock ~105C). The exact temp depends on the resistor value inside the heat shrink.
