    FS: 1993 500E, 32kmi, Pearl Black/Black, $90k, Canepa (Scotts Valley, CA)

    VIN: WDBEA36E9PB914462

Another Bruce Canepa low mileage .036 offering:

Not sure if this car is in GVZ's database or not.

    Al

Yikes - this is the infamous Florida 500E that Jono inspected and much discussion was had about it:

[Admin edit: Merged threads on same car.]

    1993 MERCEDES-BENZ 500E

This example was purchased by its first owner on July 29th 1993 at Claridge's Ltd in Fremont, California. It would spend the next 16 years in Northern California, and in 2009 the car would move on to its second owner in Florida. Today the car has covered only 32,829 miles and service records from 2003 till 2017 verify mileage, along with its clean CarFax.

Since its arrival at Canepa the 500E has undergone a complete mechanical inspection and service, as well as our signature concours level detail. Now is the time to buy one of these quickly ascending super-sedans, and this low mileage example is the perfect vehicle to satisfy your need for elegant, understated speed for four.

Complete with books, sales brochure, and service record

    Merged threads on same car.

I hope prospective buyers review the photos in posts 56-60 before forking over $100k for this particular 036.

BTW, I believe the price is a dyslexic typo. They probably meant $98,500. I expect in 6 months Hatch will have it listed at $120k, while the car is still looking for its 'forever home'...

they still didn't fix the epoxy primer on the trunk latch...

They did do a nice job of taking the photos so you can't REALLY see the damage. Good on the photog for being cognizant and aware of what they Shouldn't show!!

If who ever Does buy this thing doesn't do a VIN search before hand I feel bad for them...but then again, I'm just nit picky and bitter so Whatever...

As I have always mentioned, this proves once again that collectors pay for mileage and that this car IS a very nice example, hence having sold in April for $50k, a few months later for $60k, and now Canepa at $90.
It also shows that the big collector money doesn’t care about the opinions made by a car mechanic in Georgia or uninformed opinions on this website.
Prices paid are REAL and opinions made are nothing but hot air.

Y'all can watch this space for photos of a Proper example w/ 17K miles that was recently purchased by a Real enthusiast.

Every bit the stunning example one would hope it to be!

Let me get this straight. A "collector who has lot-so money" buys a car that has been "publicly" identified by a known pro merc merchanic and shop owner as having issues, is still OK with buying it because they are a collector? As if they can't bring themselves to admit that it has issues, but because it has low mileage it must be worth the asking price? Low mileage does not equal high price in all cases. While there may be some uninformed opinions on any automobile enthusiast website, I have found that the majority of the contributors on this website are quite well informed as a whole. Your posts strike me as someone who is uninformed or has a different agenda than most who frequent this fine forum.

Viewed from a different perspective, the buyers get the car and then [within a very short period of time, few weeks/months] decide to re-sell it rather than keep it. Or, it's being passed from dealer to dealer. Neither is a particularly good scenario.

i was going to respond to this when I made my earlier post but then said I should wait and see if the mood strikes me later. Well, it did.

I take offense at the fact you called Jono a car mechanic. It shows a lack of respect and ignorance on your part. In today’s world, pettiness seems to have reached new lows. When someone does not like what someone else is saying, regardless of if it is right or not, they attack the messenger. Jono is a Mercedes enthusiast through and through. He comes by it honestly as his father had many Mercedes when Jono was growing up. Jono now enjoys a business with his father to restore them. Calling him a mechanic is like saying Michael Jordan is just another basketball player. What you miss is Jono has no axe to grind or a hidden agenda, does not need to brag about the car he is selling to get another (how’s that AMG GT?), nor flaunt what he has. Jono’s probably forgotten more about a single model of Mercedes than most of us will ever know.

BTW, if a collector would ask Jono about this one (or any one), he’d give an honest answer and save them some money or give them some things to consider when determining fair market value or post acquisition maintenance needs.

A couple of years ago, he took time out to look at the car I had already bought to make sure it was a good example.

So rather than disparaging the membership because they call them like they see them (good and bad), why not try to be a contributing member of the board — or just leave.

Re: US CAR BEING ADVERTISED IN THE UK

Please take note of what was said. Your contribution here has been limited to criticizing a group of enthusiasts with knowledge and integrity that is becoming increasingly rare in the times we live in. I suggest you take the time to read through some of the thousands of examples of knowledgeable help dispensed here. Maybe it will help you to see the petty insults implied through your comments are out of line. Really. Your only point seems to be that because someone paid x amount for an item it must be worth it. By the time it takes to read this thousands of folks will have overpaid for something. Dealers of all sorts included. I have NO Doubt Jonathan has represented the car in question fairly and accurately. If you think it's worth more, buy it.

Thanks a gazillion, Drew. Fools and their money...

And Robert saved me some typing as well. Jono's a documented 2nd generation owner, collector, restorer and purveyor of the finest MB cars, in an era where big, monied dealerships have been steadily putting such shops out of business by loading cars with technology requiring tools the small shop cannot afford. Think about that for a second, if you have the capacity to think. What he and his dad have done is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit, toughness and commitment to excellence that makes any business successful over the long term. It may or may not make you rich. But it will yield something much more valuable than money.

    Cheers to all of that,

I echo what Robert, Drew and maw have said, and I also note that while this long thread has been frustrating, it also shows why this board is so strong. We have a non-regular posting vulgar money-obsessed nonsense (this is the wrong car for that crowd), attacking one of the foundational contributors who makes this site useful and enjoyable, and generally demeaning the value of actually having knowledge of how these cars work (what’s wrong with being a “car mechanic” anyway—I think everyone here would take that as the highest of compliments), BUT the offender hasn’t been banned and this thread hasn’t been shut down. He gets his chance to say what he wants, and those that want to can read it, and if they want to they can respond. I’m not sure if the Board is a better place because of this thread, but it is better generally because of this tolerant attitude.

That said, if the mods decide to ban this poster and/or shut down this thread, I can’t say I’ll shed any tears.

PS - Jono, if this guy’s ultimate argument is true and there are collectors willing to pay huge $$$$ for low mile cars with big flaws, your net worth just took a big jump up considering the truly special low mile (and great condition) cars you have.

    Re: FS: 1993 500E, 32kmi, Pearl Black/Black, $90k, Canepa (Scotts Valley, CA)

I haven't been here for a while (busy on other projects) but I HAVE spent a lot of time on BaT, which no doubt some of us are also fans of. What is interesting to me is that when a 500E comes up on BaT, invariably someone promptly refers potential bidders or buyers to this site. It never fails.

I have a variety of collector cars, and a few Mercedes. There is no model-specific site for anything I own that is as well-informed, as well-managed, and as useful as this one. Granted, there are some good sites, no question, but they don't compare to this one.

I also moderate a forum for boat owners of a particular brand, and I wish we had the level of civility there that exists here. Sadly, we do not. If I did not already own a 500E, this would be the first place I looked for one. Not that I don't like other sites, but for authority and no-dog-in-the-hunt accuracy, this site, as they say, bears the bell away.

Was able to see this 500E in the Canepa showroom last Saturday during their Cars and Coffee event. It presents very well, but hard to get a good look underneath in their showroom 'theater' lighting. I live about 20 minutes from Canepa so happy to take a closer look if anyone is interested.

Canepa: 1993 500E lower cladding color?

I visited Canepa today with a 964 buddy and ran into this car. It looks to me like the lower cladding color is painted same as the body, 199. Looked great but is this lower cladding color factory? My '94 has the 199 paint code but with the Alto gray lower which is lighter gray in color, more contrast. Really like the look of this car.

All 199 cars pre and post facelift if paint is 199 then lower cladding is Alto no exceptions. That was painted afterwards and 199 looks great with bottom matching

Color me crazy but I *PREFER* the original look with alto grey on the bottom and 199 on the top. I find that it provides for a lighter visual look --- perhaps the way Bruno Sacco intended.

That and I think two-tone cars should make a comeback.

    +1

I have always appreciated the two-tone nature of the late 1980s and 1990s MBs, and never subscribed to the opinion that the two-tone paint makes them look "dated."

I also appreciate the mono-tone paint, but more prefer the car to look and be as it was originally intended from the factory.

    Cheers,
    Gerry
