    FS: 1992 500E, Smoke Silver/Cream-Beige, 205kmi, $18k (Oakland, CA)

    1992 Mercedes Benz 500E
    VIN number: WDBEA36E4NB803251
    Motor number: 119974-12-005265
    Smoke Silver with Cream-Beige Leather

Original owner purchased the vehicle from W.I. Simonson, Inc, Santa Monica, CA on January 30,1993.
This 500E has always been a California registered car and is for sale by the second owner who purchased it December 23, 1998 from R.A.B. Motors in West San Rafael, CA with a mileage of 72,961. The current mileage is approximately 200,500 and the car easily passed a recent California emissions test.

The original books and Mercedes Benz AM/FM Stereo Radio with Cassette Player are included with the sale although the original radio is not currently installed. There is a Kenwood KDC-X696 CD-Receiver with USB Interface head unit with Bluetooth and an external microphone currently installed. All service receipts from 1999 are included. I don’t have the receipts prior to my ownership. All routine service performed per Owner’s Manual, which is up to date. Four door/ignition keys and one valet key.

At mileage 104,805 BergWerks in Van Nuys, CA installed an ASR Defeat switch in the Snow Chain switch slot. The wiring harness was replaced on 7/12/11 at mileage 149,754.

Transmission rebuilt by Sun Valley Mercedes Transmission on 9/23/14 at mileage 178,526. Transmission with torque converter rebuilt using original transmission case.

The front struts, strut mounts and strut bearings were replaced on 3/4/15 at mileage 182,478.

In the past month the distributor caps, spark plugs, wire set, air mass meter, air temperature sensor, engine temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, ignition coils, fuel pressure regulator, catalytic converter, radiator, engine under tray and battery were all replaced.

The interior is in good condition except for the driver’s seat where there is wear on the bolsters as should be expected. There is a crack in the veneer on the rear seat ashtray cover and a small crack between the exterior mirror adjust switch and window lock switch. There are no cracks on the dash. All electrical controls work as they should. The A/C blows cold air.

The original windshield has been replaced with a windshield made by Pilkington. Current rubber is Bridgestone Potenza RE760, 225/55R16. The sale includes one spare wheel/tire, in addition to the spare in the trunk. There are two rubber front floor mats for winter and four carpet mats. No logos. There is also a custom fit Covercraft sun shade/heat shield. The car has always been garaged during my ownership and there is zero rust having always been a California car. There a couple of small parking dents in the rear panel between the trunk and the bumper.

    Gee,

I'm surprised that this car hasn't recieved more attention here. Not one comment. Am I missing something?

Current owner since 72K miles with service records and lots of pics. I think he has tried to represent the car honestly. Driver's seat is pretty tired. Undercarriage looks pretty dry, aftermarket CAT, rear muffler must be pretty new it still has a sticker on it. It could be a good driver for someone with a little attention.

    Now on BAT.

Other than the driver seat wear, it looks pretty good overall. Emission test results are amazing, possibly due to the new catalyst. $4700 receipt from a few weeks ago for a bunch of new stuff, wow:

"... passed a California smog check on 2/10/17 as pictured in the gallery. The most recent service was completed three days later at a cost of $4,716 and included replacement of distributor caps, spark plugs, plug wires, mass air sensor, ignition coils, oxygen sensor, fuel pressure regulator, battery, and catalytic converter. The transmission was rebuilt by Sun Valley Mercedes Transmission in September 2014 at 178,526 miles using the original transmission case. The seller states that the engine could use new motor mounts."

It probably hasn't received attention because people that already own an E500E know that +200kmi isn't a big deal if the car has been maintained, while most people who are looking to buy one want a low miler.

Nice car and fairly represented. I agree with the preceding post- people who know what it is already have one, people who don't are scared off by the mileage, which they ought not to be. Almost every Mercedes I own is past 100K miles, and most of those miles I have put on.

Certainly. Unless you want a low mile "investor" car, buy this one. Address the driver's seat and motor mounts, and down a wonderful road you go.

It is funny because you would think people would say "wow a lot of the E500E's can clock 150-200k miles and still be running"....I don't know what better signal than a 25 year old series of car is well made when you have a lot that have 150k miles or more. Sure there is a decent upkeep cost but this was at the height of technology. Has known maintenance issues they need to be addressed...but what it doesn't really have is some big engineering problem/history with the engine or internal that makes them blow up. Do the maintenance issues like wiring harness and you're fine and we'll all see you on the other side of 200k miles.

Goof balls on bring a trailer try to peg these as prima donna money pits...far from it...they are ground pounding bad ass cars built like tanks that can run 200k miles pretty effortlessly....does any car company now a days factor in a lifecycle of thier cars beyond 10 years/100k miles max?

It's funny when people talk about maintenance costs of these cars being astronomical. Not because it's false, but because any car of a similar age and high end level will have a similar cost. But it seems that for other cars maybe people just don't spend the money and are ok with a car that isn't up to par.

Totally agree: I've owned an E38 740i Sport and an L322 Range Rover and both were maintenance-intensive/costly like an .036. The nice thing is the .036 is worth enough to justify putting four figures into at every service, year after year, unlike the other two. No one tells these cars they are no longer $70k-$80k cars anymore when they need service at 15 years of age. They were sophisticated, advanced cars when new and the parts costs reflect that. That's why its nice to buy an old high end car from the first owner; most will have maintained it based on the price they paid new instead of for $10k at the "WE FINANCE ANYONE" used lot in your local hood.

The BAT commentary is priceless. For example, from brookedale091462:

    First-Porsche did suspension and brakes-period.
Second-The Porsche factory was not full of these sitting in the lot. They made less than 300 per year.
Third-AMG’s pre-MB ownership involvement was much greater than Porsche’s contribution.

They spend the money up-front to buy a car and then don't take care of it. It doesn't occur to these folks that their car is no longer up to par, or they just assume since the car is now old, there is NO way it could possible be like new if properly maintained.

But I see plenty of Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas on the road from that era, and they're likely much less to maintain. Of course that's not the point. None of those cars ever -- ever, even new -- drove, turned and stopped like these do at 200k miles.

    And that's the point.

That was likely a great deal... under market value, IMO. Hope it wasn't a flipper.

It was a great deal. Little action for BAT - probably the mileage scared most potential buyers off.

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Smoke Silver/Cream-Beige, 205kmi, $18k (Oakland, CA)

I was surprised my car didn't receive more attention here early on. I don't think I qualify as a flipper since I've had the car for 20 years. The front fenders had both been repainted for minor damage and so that showed on the Carfax report. That and the mileage probably held the bidding down. There was a dark 1992 on BaT a couple weeks ago that didn't meet the reserve of $12.5k and it had 174k miles and baling wire thru the grille for a hood release. I haven't heard from the buyer yet but I believe the car is heading to Europe.

This is a great site and I appreciate the time and effort the moderators put in to it. It has really made ownership a better experience and maybe I'll own another one some day.
