    Re: WTB: Renntech bits

I had a used RennTECH CF airbox this past summer that was given to me...I was so excited. But it was so dried up, fragile and yellowy brown that I threw it out. Major disappointment ! Not even worth hanging it on the wall in my garage.

Only the top of the box is RennTECH btw, the bottom is OE M119.....I really don't believe any more air flow is had with these despite the manufacturers claim.

Same with their chips, no more power...just the power it already makes gets moved around the rpms. I actually drag raced a RennTECH equipped car (which was not a 6 liter) at New England Dragway back in 2003...our cars were within .01 seconds of each at the trap, and that .01 second was the jump he got on me at the green lites. (major disappointment for him who thought he was going to blow me away)

The carbon fiber airbox is restorable even when it's peeling/brown nastinest. Jimbo- it's just they put a gelcoat which was polyester and peeled!! The carbonfiber main plies are very solid.

Michael, I have a couple where the gelcoat has completely disintegrated. But the underlying fiber weave is no longer the pretty black color. Is there any way to restore this back to original appearance? Any vendors that do this kind of restoration?

Perhaps they are...but this one wasn't. If the box actually did something ,other than looking rather cool and custom, then maybe they are worth restoring to someone.

Dry as a saltine cracker along the edges where the top mates to the bottom box. Too much heat damage....

For the record, I'm only interested for appearances. I've tested the RENNtech airbox and another one as well (even larger than the RENNtech) and just like the RT chips, zero power gain. The airboxes look purty when new though.

The yellowing of the CF box is strictly around the clear finish. If you were to sand off the clear, if could be repainted with clear and look brand new (yet still no performance enhancement)

Ha ! It was an epic night, folks up there never seen the likes of these cars. 1/4 mile in 14.1 seconds...just like the factory and magazines all said.

An Almandine Red (RennTECH chip and airbox equipped) and my Jolly Green Giant 500E (bone stock motor)...nose to nose all the way down the tarmac. Pretty cool....and now the Almandine Red one is scrap metal (totaled some years back).

Sorry to muddle this guys WTB thread...

Robert, have you had one restored or did one yourself? Sanding the clearcoat? Wouldn't that just drive the crappy stuff more into the fibers?

I guess you can do that , then lay a fresh CF layer over the old and re-coat.

I have not had one restored but used to be big into cycling. I used to have Calfee Design Dragonfly road bike and know Craig Calfee (the owner/founder). They have a repair service for carbon fiber and he told me that the clear essentially sits on top of the weave and they are able to sand it down to the fibers so that they can then begin repairs before repainting. It is a process done by hand but nevertheless restores the look.

Speaking of which... quite a few of the RENNtech badges on fleaBay are copies / replicas, not genuine originals. Be careful, if the seller doesn't explicitly state they are originals, and/or has a history of selling multiple sets for a long time, they're probably bogus. Now, I'm fine with replica stuff if it's advertised as such and priced appropriately, but they're often $150-$300 for a set of three which is nuts for fake badges.

Further complicating things is that most of the badges for sale are the current-gen badges, which are NOT period-correct for a late 90's RENNtech build (either W124 or W210). The early trunk badges are larger dimension and are textured around the 'tech' letters; late style is smooth.

I know mine is original as I got it from Eddie Lai who got it from the owner of Renntech himself . Although if someone had the period correct one I would love to get it or if anyone seen one for sale let me know

Photo attached, this is from ±18 months ago. It looks worse now, almost all the clearcoat has flaked off. I'm curious what a carbon-fiber specialist could do to resurrect it - and what that might cost vs just buying a new one.

I would bet that if it was cleaned up it could be hydro dipped and at least look like CF.

Rente check did change the lettering on their logo..
