I was trying to think of why Starke (FL) was on my mind recently, and I realized it was because of this:

Seen this beauty around town? Hard to miss with that luggage rack....

One of my cars came from Starke! Another from Gainesville... neither are 036's though.

Starke is where Florida State Prison is located. The one where they execute people. Used to go there in a previous career until the business owner decided they didn't support capital punishment.

Today's trivia: They don't use the mains to electrocute people.

    Re: Turbo 400E

So I spent the day wiring up the cluster and tying some loose ends. I took all the extra wires out of the engine bay, rolled em up and tucked them away. Everything fits rather nicely and looks almost stock. The cluster works properly (ran a wire from the temp sensor to the green wire on the cluster plug), and wired megasquirt to the tachometer. The engine runs and idles at 14.2 afr. It needs to be tuned which I'll do during the week, and the engine harness needs high temp friction tape to make it look proper. (Also I know the exhaust sits hideously low, it's temporary till the turbo is plumbed up). I'm thrilled with the out come so far. Sorry if I sound choppy, I'm excited to drive it and I'm rushing.

I posted it for sale in the jax area, idk why it's in Orlando. I was selling it because I lost interest in it and I had two projects. I might turn it into a truck later on.

Just a quick recap on some info you guys have shared before, an M119 from an S class needs the E class oil pan and pick up tube, exhaust manifolds, and engine mount towers to swap into a W124, correct? I found a 97 S500 for a few hundred bucks. It has the updated M119 and 722.6 transmission which would be better than my 4.2l/722.3.

AFAIK, yes, that is all correct. I'm not sure what additional mods may be needed to make the 722.6 fit into a 124.034/.036 chassis though.

My brother has a 722.6 behind his Turbo M104 in his W124. Direct swap with the lines and all. Even the drive shaft fits. I'm trying to get in contact with the guy. The lower compression 5.0l and 722.6 would be a better turbo platform imho.

There is a another jockey on the m119 gearbox (4bolts) and 3bolt on 4, 5 and 6 cylinder engine. But there is no problem, just pair the right parts (jockey/prop.shaft)

W124's have a 4 prode flange like the S class. All of that should line up. I'm just worried about the engine. Were later M119's open or closed decks? I'm starting off at 4psi and working my way up, but there is another group that blew out the cylinders on an open deck M119 at 10psi.

Open deck started about halfway through 1994 USA model year production, so a 1997 will definitely be open-deck.

My current engine is out of a '94 E420, so.it might be an open deck already. The other guy who shattered a sleeve did so at 10psi. I'm starting at 4psi and maybe going to 5-6.

    Re: Turbo 400E

So I ran across a '91 500SL for a really cheap price and scooped it up. I know this is my turbo thread and not the 500 section, but it is a megasquirt thing. Does the later model M119 manifold/fuel rail fit onto the CIS M119? I might megasquirt this after I master the 400E.

It took 2 seconds to grow onto me. The wider color selection in the pre-facelift 129 cars is almost worth foregoing the .6 transmission. Almost. But for the right money, that’s a good score. Following with interest because while I’ve considered electronic ignition for a M117, not so much for a M119. But then again I hadn’t considered forced induction really either.

    Re: Turbo 400E

The paint is in decent shape, the rear bumper has a section that needs to be addressed but the rest is fine. Even the hard top is good. The car runs on 4 cyl at idle and the other 4 join in around 1500 rpms, so it'll require some caps and rotors. I bought this car to drive it while my 400E was down, and so I would stop putting 126 miles on my brothers 500E everyday. CIS isnt my favorite but for $1200 I couldnt pass up the car. Once the 400E is drivable I want to see if I can convert this CIS into EFI. I have plenty of manifolds and fuel rails/lines laying around, and I'm willing to buy another Megasquirt setup and go through the headache again. Also, a 722.6 will be in this cars future.

There was another post a few days ago where Klink extolled the characteristics of the CIS M119, indicating in proper knick that its got a lot more ‘soul’ than the LH variant. I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts if you get it in good shape before you start tinkering.

The plan is to give it a good tune about and getting it running right so I can use it as a daily. Later one I'll megasquirt it.

The late M119 intake manifold won't bolt up, at least not without modifications. The early (CIS-E) block is tall deck and very few parts interchange with the late (LH / ME) blocks.

Indeed, the CIS M119 is architecturally more of a “four valve M117” having almost nothing mechanically in common with the LH and ME M119s. That being said, I know that people that did not “grow up” with CIS reflexively think it sucks, but once you get that one fixed, you may agree that the CIS / early M119 was a happy configuration.

Oh, forgot to mention not that it matters, there are no words for how much I love that exterior color. The only one I have ever liked as much are the similar, but a little darker “Moonstone”, and the nonmetallic “Pastel” and “Ascot” grays. Think gray primer under glass for those last two, definitely not for everybody, though I am starting to see lots of similar colors on new vehicles...

It was an unusual color which is was drew me to the car. Guy came to the shop trying to sell it. We inspected the car and found two soft top shocks leaking, some interior pieces that need TLC, and that it ran on 4cyl until 1500 rpms. I let my brother talk him down on the price and prove that the cluster mileage was incorrect. After they parted ways I swooped in and snagged it. I'll probably keep an eye out for a 96-99 S500 for an engine and trans donor.

$1200 is definitely a good number. It must have tons of miles. Get rid of that amber at the corners while you’re at it please.

    Re: Turbo 400E

You guys have been a lot of help, and I hate that I ask so many questions, but I have one more lol. Is there a shorter belt and a different belt routing possible on the M119 so you can delete the air pump? I decided to put the turbo in the engine bay to try and get an idea of what it'll take, and I kinda like this idea better. I figured out you can reverse the M119 manifolds so they point forward, and all I'd have to make is a collector that connects to the manifolds. But the air pump and it's bracket are a bit of an obstruction... Any ideas? The bracket location is a prime spot to run the collector pipes.

    Re: Turbo 400E

There is an air pump replacement bracket with pulley, but it occupies the same space. Due to the location of the other pulleys, at best all you could do is relocate it slightly, but it would be impossible to fully delete a pulley in this location. The belt length would be custom, determined via trial & error. Try bypassing the air pump pulley as if it weren't here, you'll see what I mean about the belt not being able to function without SOME pulley in that area.

Or, you could go nuts with electric fans and water pump, and try to make major changes in the belt routing...?

    Re: Turbo 400E

I have removed the fan (was bad anyways) and it free'd up a lot of space. Though getting rid of the air pump for a small pulley would still help a lot. The easiest way I have come up with is cutting the down pipe at the second bend when they head towards the back of the car and turning them 180° into a collector. After that running a 90° elbow up to the turbo right infront of the air pump.

Another few photos. As much as I love driving my brothers Renntech 500E (pictured below) I can't wait till the 400E is done. Intercooler and all will come later one, right now I just want it plumbed up and ready to go.

    Re: Turbo 400E

Thank you and no problem lol. I added a V-band clamp near the front so in the future the exhaust is easy to remove, and when I eventually take it to an exhaust shop to get it replicated so it isn't made out of 60 different pieces from a dodge truck, it'll be easy to remove and mate the new piece up to it. Once everything is welded up I need to heat wrap it all, buy a few fittings and make the feed and drain. Then it should be drivable.

    Re: Turbo 400E

Used some sloppy treatment to make a fitting I couldnt find anywhere. Also bought the materials to make a drain and heat wrapped the first section of exhaust. This weekend's plan is to finish the exhaust, hook up the oil line, drop the pan, drill a hole in the upper pan and install the bulk head for the drain.

Also realized that running a gravity fed drain will be next to impossible with all the accessories still on it. So I'll use the STS scavenge pump to pump it back into the lower oil pan.

    Re: Turbo 400E

I took the exhaust with me to work and used safety wire to give me peace of mind. I also "repaired" a Vband clamp I broke on Saturday the sloppy way. Lol. I'm also thinking of a very odd way of routing the oil drain between the alternator and the engine (only way possible).
